IGN News : Severed Fingers Cant Unlock iPhone 5S
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rs_68ZGPEj8
Well, I guess we can't believe everything we see in movies huh? They make it look so easy.

Remembering the thumb thieves from Back To The Future II now...
Fingerprint ID seems like a bad idea. The FIRST EPISODE of Burn Notice pointed out that your fingerprint is on there all the time unless you clean it off after every use (unlikely, especially if you're on the street which is when it's most likely to be snatched), then a little trickery can get it unlocked.
Someone pointed out that there's a fifth amendment problem with this-- you can't be compelled to give away a password or any information that's in your head, but the same doesn't hold true for a fingerprint (or if you have the passwords written down, so MEMORIZE THEM PEOPLE). So unless you have to put in a password as well as a thumbprint, your phone is a lot less secure.
The whole fingerprint ID thing sounds like kabuki security, it SEEMS like it would be secure but it really isn't. We're overdue for a rethink on how security works, not this garbage.

That took about as long as I had figured: The iPhone fingerprint sensor has ALREADY been hacked (http://www.buzzfeed.com/jwherrman/the-iphones-fingerprint-sensor-has-already-been-hacked).
-
Haha. It was expected. It was probably the first guy in line that did the hacking. Egg on face.

Tracking down the voice of Siri

I just found out this weekend, on my iPad, using www.google.com, you can select a microphone function where I can ask a question instead of typing.
Dependent on the question or statement, google may answer with a voice and definitely take you to the web related data.
Freakin cool

Siri Gets Catty If You Confuse Her With Scarlett Johansson
In Spike Jonze’s latest film, Her, a mustachioed Joaquin Phoenix plays a man who falls in love with a Siri-like “digital assistant,” Her, played by Scarlett Johansson.
You’d think Siri would appreciate having a movie made about her, but instead, kitty’s got claws when it comes to her filmic counterpart: thanks to Apple’s cheeky and surprisingly timely programmers, if you ask Siri “Are you her?” she will respond: “No. Her portrayal of an intelligent agent is beyond artificial”, “No. You know that it’s just a movie, right?” and “No. In my opinion, she gives artifical intelligence a bad name.”

Hey peeps. As I've mentioned before, I ditched my cell phone years ago and haven't looked back since then. Monthly payments were getting out of control and even at it's basic/cheapest payment plan, it was still a huge waste of money. Fast forward to today and I was curious to know if there was an option to pick up a smartphone for the sole purpose of browsing websites online. Simply put, have a smartphone for WiFi usage only and not using it for calling people. What are my options. Looking forward to hearing what you guys have to say.
-
I can't help. I'm a dumbass when it comes to these types of phones. I'm considering going back to flip phone.
I'm hearing the joke with today's phones, is they are used for every thing BUT talking on. Go figure.
Good luck and let us know what you find.

Getting a Smartphone with no Data Plan: The Tech Guy 1090
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9oTeN7fPxEU
This seems to be the solution.
-
Good ol' Leo, solvin' our tech problems!
-
Okay, now that we know what I want is possible, I'm asking you guys for suggestions as to what phone I should get.
-
Yo, Mac and Neumatic, what kind of phone do you have? Make and Model? Any good?
-
I'd still have my RAZR if my family hadn't pressured me into getting an iPhone 4S (I think it's a 4S) because "we can never get in touch with you!" It's really more of a camera than anything else, and I rarely take pictures.
-
Does your phone have enough storage to put music on? Do you use it for that?
-
Nope, cheapest model, smallest size. if I want music, I have all that space in my beloved iPod.

Lenovo teases flex phone of the future (CNET News)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rKVsT7EoqJQ
This is insane. It may be tacky as f*ck and I'd NEVER wear my phone on my arm as they demonstrate in the video, but the idea that this is possible is pretty damn cool. Same goes for the tablets as well.
-
I heard about this last week. Lots of buzz.
This thing is going to explode. I think more so than that freakin little smart watch.
Buy some Lenovo stock... Now
-
My Mom is lovin' her new phone. It's her favorite toy now and she uses it all the time, especially as a Music Player.

That's very cool to hear

How To Spot A Fake iPhone
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HqCq8SvMWC4
Good stuff to know. I certainly wouldn't know what to look if not for this video. I did find that Spotify app particularly funny.
-
Wow... That's amazing how they copied the look and feel.
At work we were talking about headphone knock-offs. I heard they exist, but wouldn't have a clue to know the difference. Maybe we should have a thread on 'Fake'?

A Bootleg Thread is a great idea. I'm always having to do research on stuff before I buy because of Bootlegs and need to know that I'm getting what I paid for.

Apple iPhone 7 Plus hands-on: new cameras and no headphone jack!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x5dagVHAgzM
FAIL!
I'm not a fanboy or consumer of Apple Products. Never owned an iPhone in my life. But I always had it in the back of my mind that one day I would probably get one . But removing the headphone jack just cemented the fact that they will never get my money. These AirPods look stupid. But the fact that Apple is forcing people to pay $150 extra in order to use something that was free with the old setup just smacks of a lame, weak excuse to price gouge loyal Apple consumers. I feel bad for them. I do. I for one will not take a bite out of this rotten apple. Ever. On a personal level, I hate earbuds. I'm old school and like over the ear headphones. It's more comfortable for me to wear instead of cramming something into my ears.
-
I read somewhere, the jack removal is to collaborate a long range plan for wireless Beats?
I kinda let out a laugh when he said stereo speakers.
-
It's to make the iPhone slimmer. Not that it needs to be any slimmer.
It's about control. The new standard has DRM, so you can't record or copy sound coming from them. It's also a proprietary format, to keep you from using anything Apple disapproves of. They don't like that anyone can make headphones, earbuds, iPhone cases, external speakers or anything that they don't get some cash out of. So instead, this.
There's no reason for digital wires, or wireless. The standard audio jack is universal, it's great, everyone can use it, it has high fidelity. If you want wireless, there's bluetooth and it's awful.
Now, it's possible that they'll put this in all the new Apple gear (I will be P*SSED if I can't get a headphone jack in my computer-- might have to go Hackintosh!) and give you the ability to switch between sources on the fly, that could be cool. And I guess it fits with Apple getting rid of extraneous elements (floppy drive, ethernet ports, etc) to keep things streamlined, but when you do that, you want to keep the most UNIVERSAL ports. USB, headphones, the lock, etc. And when you have double-use ports (like one port for USB AND charging and that's it) on a device where most people use both? That's overkill.
The thing is, the Apple minimalist design is reaching the point of diminishing returns. You can't really make an iPhone or a lapto much thinner before it becomes too frail or just generally unusable, I don't think. So what are they supposed to do? The next laptops will have an OLED screen replacing the function bar, which I guess is cool (though it does look a bit iffy), but that's about it.

Tour of a fake Apple Store in China
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LLXJBYbuV8w
How am I just now hearing about this....a video that is 5 years old? Yes, I know people sell fake Apple products out of the back of vans, in swap meets and whatnot. But I never knew that anyone would be bold enough to create a fake Apple Store. Really not sure why this video even popped up in my YouTube Suggestion feed since I don't want or browse Apple products. Since this just popped up, I thought it was a brand new story. It's not. But still fascinating to see here.
-
were you doing any search for our fake/fraud thread?
But, ya, that is bold.
-
No searches of the kind that would warrant that being in my feed.
