DIY Les Paul Guitar Kit (Part 1: Overview)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B6bUJOnwcjE
So, I have been kinda of itching to building my own guitar using a DIY Kit. There are a lot of different styles of kits (http://stores.ebay.com/stupidlow/Guitar-Kits-/_i.html?_fsub=4059907012&_sid=558018302&_trksid=p4634.c0.m322) to choose from btw. Not just this Les Paul one as seen in the video. I don't think you will be able to beat the price at just $120. I did build and construct my own guitar in wood-shop when I was in High School and yes, I designed and cut out my own guitar body. The only thing I didn't make was the neck which I took from my first guitar that I ever got. Anyway, the end result looked good (I got an A in wood-shop for my project) but the guitar itself sounded like sh*t. Horrible. I used the wrong type of wood and the alignment was off as well. I still have it packed in the guitar case somewhere out in the garage. Yup, the case was the next class project.
As I said, I've been thinking of trying my hand at getting one of these kits. The prices are pretty damn cheap when compared to high end guitars. Hell, it's cheap when you compare it to low end guitars. Did some research and found this 6 Part Instructional / step by step tutorial. He does a great job of walking you through it. I'm only going to post the first video here. If you click on the YouTube Logo on the bottom right corner itself, it will circle you back to his YouTube channel and you can find the other parts. I'm amazed how awesome the guitar turned out. It's a pretty fascinating look at constructing a guitar from start to finish. Check it out. I actually learned a lot of stuff that I didn't know about and this coming from someone that built one back when I was just a kid. Love the blue finish he put on the body of the guitar. Looks like a Paul Reed Smith finish.
The guy that did the video is currently doing one for Steve Vai's Jem Guitar. There is only Part 1 at the moment. Definitely keeping my eye on that one and can't wait to see what he comes up with for the finish.

Fantastic idea for you and this thread.
My guitarist scored a major win on Craigslist with a guy who kinda botched up an expensive DIY guitar kit with exotic woods. Got it for a song. He just put the finishing touches on it. It looks fantastic.
The DIY route sounds awesome.
Definitely keep us informed when you go down the road.
The E-Drum forum I read has a ton of stuff about DIY kits. Right now I don't have the time. I'm still using a lot of time to practice. But if time should open up, I would love to try my hand at a kit.

I've dug a little bit deeper on the company that issues this particular DIY Kit and it's not considered to be one of the best. Many people say that the wood is good, but the parts are utter garbage. I'm willing to pay a bit more per kit if need be to make sure I'm getting top quality pickups, switches, etc.... Warmoth (http://www.warmoth.com/) comes up quite a bit as a legit company that does solid Kits. I have to research them further to see if they are the way to go. At a glance at the site, in the 'Build Your Own Guitar' option, they don't have any Gibson Les Paul. Sigh.

Let me talk to my guitarist and see what he might add for advice.

Thanks dude.

My guitarist came back with...
These kits are a great intro to building your own.
They get high marks in the DIY community.

I thought we had a thread dedicated to architecture and whatnot. Couldn't find it. Well, this can also go here since it definitely falls in line as a DIY project and this is pretty damn awesome if I do say so myself. I am giving this some serious consideration. Have to dig up some more info about this and how plumbing and all that will factor in and how you can have access to the land you are on, etc.....
