I know that Near Dark has a massive cult following and is considered to be up near the top when it comes to the Vampire Genre. Even though I like a good chunk of the movie, I don't think it's as good as some people make it out to be. There are some spots in the movie that defy logic and it has nothing to do with Vampires. It's never sit well with me that everyone in the bar upon seeing Jesse (Lance Henriksen) slit the waitress' throat would continue to stand there and not make a run for the door. Even as others get wasted in the bar, the remaining patrons just....stand there as if it's nothing. Another thing that annoys me is that the little girl Sarah would even be allowed to go outside a motel and get a soda late at night. Really?
The story really isn't much. It's a bunch of wandering Vampires looking to feed, basically going in circles. No clear endgame to the movie other than trying to get Caleb (Adrian Pasdar) to make his first kill, which he never does. The dialog and editing leaves a lot to be desired. But the movie does get a few things right, especially the cast. Ya can't go wrong when you have 3 primary stars from Aliens leading the way in Near Dark (Henriksen, Jenette Goldstein and Bill Paxton). Speaking of Paxton, he steals every scene he is in, doing that classic 'Paxton' acting he does. The movie is rough around the edges and it does deserve a Rent for sure. I'm just in the minority that doesn't agree that this is a top shelf Vampire flick. Sue me.
Whatever became of Jenny Wright who played Mae? She fell off the face of the Earth. I know she left the business years ago, but I'd like to know what she has been up to in whatever capacity.
