I posted elsewhere on Penny Can in which I said that I was never a fan of the original Star Trek. There was just something about the series that always rubbed me the wrong way. With the exception of Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, I just never bought into this particular universe. Yes, I was definitely in the Star Wars camp for sure. So, when this reboot came out and I was hearing all sorts of rave reviews, naturally my curiosity was pique. I think it was a year after the movie came out that I finally got a copy of the movie from my Library and needless to say, I was blown away by how good the movie was. Well, that was 3 long years ago and since then, even with people still talking about how awesome the movie was, I began to wonder if the movie was as good as I remembered it to be. Maybe it was just the 'newness' of the actors and the characters that made me like the movie?

Well, having just watched Star Trek for only the second time, I can easily rank this one up there as one of the greatest Sci-Fi movies ever put to film. It's actually better the second time around. But I was curious as to why I was able to totally get into this reboot, wherein I couldn't with the original and it hit me somewhere around the 20 minute mark. This new cast and the actors portraying them do not take them selves all that seriously. That was the one thing the original cast was intent on keeping at the forefront, which to me makes for a dull trip....even in space.

With this cast, it's pure adrenaline at warp speed, but it never stop to ask that the viewer take everything that is happening as being anything more than an adventure. It's fun and more often than not....it's actually funny. This movie is why I am excited that JJ Abrams is on board to revitalize Star Wars. If there is one film maker on the planet that can make Star Wars relevant again, it's him. Anyway, I highly recommend Star Trek as a must-Buy. Who wouldn't want to own this and have it part of their personal DVD library? It looks and sounds amazing. Great cast includes Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Karl Urban, Simon Pegg, Joh Cho, Zoe Saldana, Anton Yelchin, Eric Bana and Leonard Nimoy makes this a joy to watch.

Ah, I forgot to mention something in my review. Well, point out something at least. Watching this again, I was very surprised to see Chris Hemsworth in the role of George Kirk. Obviously he was an unknown actor when I originally saw the movie, so I had no idea who he was at the time. But tonight, all I kept thinking to myself was "Thor is Jim's father"? Ack!!

I honestly don't remember the last time I saw this.  I enjoyed it, and definitely agree that Star Trek needed a pump of adrenaline and a bit of style, but-- it's just Star Wars.   It's missing so much of what made Trek Trek.

But that's like saying Baseball would be better if it were more like Basketball.
