Big fan of both Jodie Foster and Chow Yun-Fat, both of who I own a lot of their stuff on DVD, including Anna and the King. This is a good flick. It looks amazing and whoever was the Set and Costumer Designer should be commended. It's been awhile since I last watched this one, and as good as the flick is, it doesn't change the fact that I personally think that the chemistry between Foster and Yun-Fat is somewhat lacking. We are suppose to buy into this being the ultimate love story between to diverse cultures that have no right to get together other than circumstances putting them in front of each other.

Now I don't know if the lack of chemistry can be attributed to the story or if there was something going on behind the scenes between the two leads. And no, I don't think it has anything to do with Foster's sexual preference either. Just look at Maverick (http://pennycan.createaforum.com/dvd's-blu-rays/maverick-(1994)/msg16338/#msg16338) to see what onscreen chemistry is when done right between Foster and Mel Gibson's . It's undeniable. The other thing I do have issue with Anna and the King is the run time. Way too long. One thing that you may find shocking, given how I have bashed on Bai Ling elsewhere on Penny Can with regards to her acting. This is by far her best (only perhaps) role and she does a great job. It's a small role, but it leaves a lasting impression none the less. Worth a Rent though.
