Title: That Metal Show (Season 13 - 2014)
Post by: Chiprocks1 on January 17, 2014, 11:21:23 am
That Metal Show returns tomorrow night on VH1 Classics. Rock on motherphuckers!! I wonder if there has ever been any desire on Eddie's part to get Vinnie Vincent on the show. You would think, given the fact that he is a huge KISS fan, this would have crossed his mind. And yet, I have never heard Eddie say his name on the air. Interesting.

Do you kniw the guests?  I miss the living room stage.  Hope they bring that back.

I didn't like the kitchen bar set up from this past season...but it's just me saying my personal preference....I liked the casual feel of the other set much more.

I am under the impression Trunk isn't a fan of VV.

that said...he'd totally have him on as a guest...but Vinnie doesn't do that stuff as you know...he's hiding my guess is because he probably looks like a freak now

He has gone on record as saying he's not a fan? I've never heard him speak ill....or positive of him. Nothing.

Got the TMS email this afternoon telling me about it premiering tomorrow. I too wasn't expecting it back this "soon", even though it's been a long hiatus since the end of Season 12. I'd like to think that we are going to get a deep well of solid guest this season. But how deep can it get without inviting the same people back on? There are still a handful of Rockers that refuse to come on, so that thins out the pool a bit. And no, I have no idea who's on this season as I'm avoiding it. Spoilers and all that jazz. I want to be surprised......and disappointed from week to week.  ;D

Get Joan Jett on the show asap. They've had Lita and Cherie on. Time to get the biggest alum on the show! Not that it will ever happen, but I would love to see all the surviving members of The Runaways on the same episode. Have the typical round table interview, followed by a Live Performance. That would be dope.

While I'm on the subject of unique casting, Eddie should definitely try and get Bruce Kulick, Ace Frehley and Peter Criss on the same episode as well. If he can't get the "Big Boys" (Gene and Paul), they should try something like I just mentioned. Having those three dudes swapping KISS stories among themselves would be epic.

having Bruce and Peter on and even Ace....man that would be **** EPIC!!!!!!!!!!  God.

wow...I want that NOW

damn you Chip and your fantasy casting couch

so have you gone to KISSFAQ and read any of the madness...I am hooked.  I've read quite a bit from first 14 pages of threads....those guys are a riot!!

They also need to get Izzy Stradlin on TMS. I know he is anti-everything and hates doing interviews. But he would be a great addition. Imagine all the stuff he can talk about since he NEVER talks about ANYTHING!

I like the idea of Izzy...but after this long really what does he have to say

nothing...I mean the only question he could field is...will there be a reunion.

Episode 1: M. Shadows & Zakk Wylde
(http://i.imgur.com/SW1TShG.gif)

Guest Guitarist: Jason Hook

Haha. I love the TMS Top 5 for this show: Things Gene Simmons said he invented. The reason for this particular Top 5 is no doubt related to what Eddie was talking about at the opening of the show regarding Gene's comments as to why he will never show up on TMS. Hand signs? What the f*ck does that have to do with coming on TMS? Gene, you can are your own worst enemy dude. Obviously the Top 5 was a jab at him and shouldn't be taken seriously. Anyway, just glad that the Top 5 is back and that Jennifer will be getting more air time since Eddie addressed that earlier as being an issue with fans.

I like that they are back in New York and back to using a set that is more like the original one. Not quite the same, but definitely a step in the right direction and certainly way better than last seasons glossy, immaculate set. Why they went down that road, I'll never know. As for the interviews, I though that M. Shadows was good, but way short. It was like Eddie was basically tossing him a bone because he wanted to get to the "real interview" with Zakk Wylde. I wasn't particularly thrilled he was going to be on the show because the last time he was on, I thought his interview was horrible. This one started off even weirder with the mask thing. But it was somewhat humorous and the interview after that was normal and entertaining. Good Gawd, seeing the old video of him with Ozzy during the Vault segment was jaw-dropping strange. I had forgotten that he had 'Steve Clark' hair. Sh*t man, that hair was bigger than a Skyscraper!!

Talk about being in the right place at the right time (unless it was staged), but that guy that "stumped" Eddie getting Jason's guitar as the item from the 'Box of junk'. Sh*t, no fail! Gimme that 6 stringer! I've been a fan longer! Gimme, damn it!! Ack!!! How sick was Jason's backup neon 'sergeant patch' guitar? Gimme!!

The Throwdown: Freddie Mercury Vs Robert Plant. No contest, Freddie for the win!! Overall, solid episode. Welcome back TMS!

Post by: boyinblack80 on January 20, 2014, 11:05:57 am
I have always liked M Shadows and his band...I don't follow them aggressively but I like them and he seems like a REALLY nice guy...he's so soft spoken and man he looks like a little kid meets a deer caught in the headlights when you interview him...but his band is like super aggressive and loud.

I loved the set, I honestly going into the show almost didn't watch it....It was about 10 minutes before it started and I saw the two guests in my guide...and I was like....ehh....I don't know...if it's like last season this is going to suck.  But I thought really the show was flawless except for Zakk...talk about a guy who lives in his own world....holy sh*t he's like talking about his studio with stupid code names, and the vests etc....everyone around him that is a pro must sort of laugh at this guy...he's like a 14 year old boy with a private club that only he's a huge fan of.  He is sort of funny....but not enough to be entertaining.

I honestly 30 minutes into the show (with ads I see an hour version) was ready for it to be over....they could have made the M Shadows interview a little longer maybe...and pushed Zakk back about 5-10 minutes.

I feel weird talking negatively about Zakk...but he's almost like watching a crack head or something....it's all pointless and he thinks he's being so clever and funny...but I just think no one has told him, he's not.

I did like the show...for the show itself, I'd give it a 5 out of 5...the guitarist they had from 5 finger death punch sounded great, and I liked the show and format quite a bit...so 5 stars for the show...3 for Zakk.

Episode 2: Living Colour (Cory Glover and Vernon Reid) & Sevendust
(http://i.imgur.com/SfhcoSn.gif)

Guest Guitarist: Joel Hoekstra

The episode was okay. The first half was kind of meh for me. Only in the second half did it pick up once everyone was on the panel, interacting with one another. I was a huge fan of Living Color and had their first couple of albums (on vinyl), but since then, I haven't followed them and was kind of surprised to see they were still together, making records.

I think the real star of the episode was without a doubt Joel Hoekstra. The same thing about Living Color applies to Night Ranger. Haven't followed them in years. So, obviously I didn't know who Joel Hoekstra was, but it was kind of odd that as soon as he started playing with his 8 finger tapping technique, I immediately said to myself ".....you know, it was be awesome if TMS got Jeff Watson to come on the show". No sooner had I said that, that's when Eddie introduced Joel as the guitar player from Night Ranger. Ah. It all made sense. I gotta give Joel some serious props for stepping outside the box and playing different styles with each break, especially when he busted out the acoustic guitar. Very nice. Overall, the episode gets only 3 Stars out of 5.

I will do a quick one for this

I felt the same exact way I did on the first episode.  I was not looking forward to it.

Vernon Reed and Corey were ok guests (Vernon has morphed into David Allen Grier by the way)

and 25 minutes into the hour long program....I was done, the show felt done, and they have got a real problem on their hands this season.

I feel like they have run out of steam this season...or don't have a real focus.

I am hoping things level out.

Howard Stern is a great example of an interviewer where he'll have a guest on and I go...man I could care less...and he can make it interesting

this season so far is me far more "hoping" than being impressed or feeling satisfied with the show itself.

I'd give this barely 1 star

I don't think it was that bad. I've seen worse episodes of TMS. But it was definitely clear they were phoning it in that night. I think part of the problem is that they are filling the panel seats with what I guess are their "buds". Doesn't help that they are not bagging some of the biggest names in the Metal / Hard Rock Genre. If they really want to up their game, they need to get Miley Cyrus on. She's Metal to the core!

shooting in New York not as many solid stop ins I guess.

don't forget they film multiple shows a day

regardless...I've never been so bored half way through the shows.

ep 1 and 2 this season were done in my eyes before the half way point.

So how do they fix it? There not gonna change the location (again), so that rules that option out. Time to cancel it? Probably, especially if the best guest they will ever get already appeared within the first 4 "seasons". Other than those fantasy guest I mentioned earlier in the thread, there really isn't left out there with the exception of Angus Young, Ozzy, Robert Plant, Jimmy Page and Gene and Paul.

without spoilers...they do have some good guests this season.

but to me I am getting bored mid-way through the show...2 times in a row.

I think it's them, it's the pacing of the show, the format, where things fall..

they need to have more front end material....then bring out the guest do a solid 2 segment piece with the first guests, then 1 mid show side step...bring out the final guest for 1 segment and then do the show enders...stump the trunk and the choice thing...they are done bringing everyone out now....by 25 minutes in and it feels like the last 35 minutes (again TV time) is filler.

that's my take at least.

what do I know?

I don't have a show on VH1.

:)

'Stump the Trunk' has been redundant and pointless since the first season. I wouldn't object if they dropped that completely if it meant making the show better. How many times do I have to be subjected to him saying "STOP. I'M THINKING". Ugh.

I am still happy the show exists...but this season thus far has been a big miss to me

maybe there's just more entertaining people online talking about music....these guys every season compete against more and more "youtube" wannabes who do their own metal shows..guitar shows, thoughts on pop culture etc...whatever their shtick is.

their talent (TMS hosts) at what they do even with guests...just isn't that interesting anymore.

a great guest will make the show...but it's really them (the guest) making it great...and hopefully the hosts stay out of their way when that great guest is speaking.

Episode 3: David Ellefson & Frankie Bello
(http://i.imgur.com/0ZhUaxY.gif)

Guest Guitarist: Bumblefoot

I'm not surprised one bit that I didn't like this episode at all. As soon as I saw who the guest were......I fell asleep. I don't have issues with either Dave or Frankie as people. I just knew exactly how the episode would play out during the interview. But it was just them that brought this episode down. It was everything. The 'Book' reading segment was dumb. The fan questions were dumb. The Stump the Trunk questions were dumb. And Eddie was dumb. The only thing good thing was getting Lzzy Hale on the show. I was curious if she would ever be invited. She wasn't in the studio itself as they did that Metal Modem segment. But with an episode and the series itself circling the drain, I will accept the Modem segment if that's the only way to get her on. Overall, boring episode and one that I won't ever watch again. How desperate are they now? Well desperate enough to use Ed's 30th Anniversary Bash to fill up a good chunk of air space because they obviously didn't have anything else to talk about on the panel.

Seriously, open the doors for more Hard Rock acts. It doesn't have to just be those in the Metal world that get on the show. Why not get David Grohl on? You don't think that would be a great hour with a sh*t load of things to talk about. Just him sitting on the panel and not saying anything would be awesome and better than anything that TMS has done the past few seasons.

I am a little under the weather so I will keep this a little short.  I liked this episode a tiny bit more than you...but this season is struggling.  I liked the interview with Lizzy hale the most also...I really wanted to see the guitars in the background and she seemed like a cool chick...so what's not to like.  I've heard  she's a great singer too...so I need to check out her stuff.

I was way more generous for the KISS mentions and was willing to give the show maybe...2.6 stars

:)

I know who the guest is next week....so I am interested to see if this tail spin will continue or go splashing down into the ocean (Atlantic ocean)

hahaha

Been on a Steve Vai kick the last 2 days....listened to all of passion and warfare last night and today did seventh song with is a pretty awesome greatest hits/

I am listening and watching this right now

Episode 4: Ted Nugent
(http://i.imgur.com/cTZ9poD.gif)

Guest Guitarist: Gary Hoey

Never in the history of That Metal Show have I ever seen a guest completely dominate the episode in the way that Ted Nugent did. Now when I say 'dominate', I mean exactly that. He took the show over and just owned it. I've never seen anyone so excited to be on TMS either, which was a breath of fresh air. Up till now, Sebastian Bach was the most animated, but The Nudge made Bach seem like he was in a coma by comparison. That's how hyper Ted was on the show. When I heard that Ted was going to be on the show, I knew that he would do exactly what he ended up doing and it was great. TMS was in serious need of energy and he provided the jolt and it was fun to watch. I may not always agree with him on politics, but as an entertainer, he does exactly that....entertain. I've seen Nugent live twice and he was just as great there as he was on the set of TMS. I love that Ted was very passionate about the music that got him started. I had no f*cking clue that he ever played bass for Chuck Berry or Bo Diddly.

Gary Hoey. I never realized it before watching this episode of TMS, but he relies on using just his first 3 fingers to play his guitar parts. Now the reason why I bring this up is that he is far more impressive in his playing ability and does so much more compared to other guitar players that use all their fingers and toes to play the same thing. Gary for the win. He was fantastic. Now, if they would bring back Ted every week, the show itself might be something it hasn't been in a while: Must-See TV. Quote of the night goes to Ted: "Hump the Trunk". Hahaha. As great as Gary was, the highlite of the episode goes to Ted jumping up on stage and rocking the Les Paul to close out the show. Not only did it make the episode EPIC in my eyes, for me that ranks up there in the Top 3 greatest moments of TMS.

I loved hearing that Lita Ford is scheduled for a upcoming episode to be the Guest Guitarist. Can't wait!

Episode 4: Alter Bridge & Matt Nathanson
(http://i.imgur.com/cTZ9poD.gif)

Guest Guitarist: Steve Brown

This episode was damn good! It was funny in all the right spots, but more importantly Myles Kennedy, Mark Tremonti and Matt Nathanson had me totally engaged with everything they were talking about. I got chills listening to Myles talking about performing with 3/4 of Led Zeppelin. I just wished that they had talked even more about that 'once in a lifetime' moment. But what really surprised me was listening to Matt. I had no knowledge of who the guy was when he walked onto the TMS stage, but he OWNED it! He comes off as a real, legit Metal fan and it's just odd that he is a Folk singer. But I love how he wants to play metal in spite of his "musical limitations". That's two episode of kick ass TMS. I gave last weeks episode 5 Stars. But THIS episode is by far the best one yet this season.

SPOILER ALERT. DON'T READ ANY FURTHER UNTIL YOU HAVE WATCHED THE EPISODE.

They talk a lot about KISS on this episode which was great. Kind of needed to hear an enthusiastic perspective about THE band I grew up with, especially coming on the heels of the disastrous news regarding the RARHOF pertaining to no Reunion happening. So, it was really fun to hear about them geeking out on KISS.

Episode 6: Lamb Of God
(http://i.imgur.com/SW1TShG.gif)

Guest Drummer: Charlie Benante

So, Lamb Of God has been around for almost 15 years. Well, you can count me as one of the few that knows absolutely nothing about them personally. Nada. Zero. So, I was kind of surprised that I took an interest in what they had to say. Sure, a good chunk of the interview dealt primarily about being sent to prison because of a tragic accident in which one of their fans died at their show. I'm definitely going to see about checking out As The Palaces Burn Documentary. Overall, a solid episode. I did like that Charlie, even though he was there as the Guest Drummer, decided to show off his playing skill on the axe. He's never going to be in the same field of guitar virtuoso. I just like him changing it up for the show is all.

Episode: 7 - Mick Jones & Leslie West
(http://i.imgur.com/SW1TShG.gif)

Guest Guitarist: Lita Ford

This episode took me off guard. It had nothing to do with the guest, but everything to do with when it was taped. Up till now, all the previous seasons are taped months in advance, 2-4 episodes a day are taped and then put on the shelf until VH1 Classic feels it's time to start a new "season" of TMS. So, when Eddie opens the show, addressing the debacle that is the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and KISS and pointing out Ace Frehley calling his radio show, I did a double take and realized immediately this episode was in fact taped no longer than 4 weeks ago. Not sure if the entire season was pre-taped as before and that they started taping newer episodes to capitalize on the heat that is RARHOF and KISS. Whatever the case may be, I prefer that they stop with the pre-tape and continue with fresh episodes. One of the annoying things about previous seasons is that by the time they aired, they would be talking about stuff that was already long gone and outdated. At least this way, things will be as current as you can get for an episode that usually takes 4 weeks from booking, filming, editing to airing.

As for the guest, I liked that they mixed it up and brought on Leslie and Mick. Good change of pace. I just wished that Mick had more to talk about. Maybe he did, but the guys were fixated on Leslie. I guess giving Eddie another guitar as a gift guarantees you more air time. As for Lita, I'm glad they finally got a chick up on stage to perform. F*ck this 'Guys Club' mentality. Her playing was good, but she's not a fret burner, so it's not going to be like other Guest Guitarist from previous episodes. She's kind of like Paul Stanley's "lead playing", it's the right amount to show people you can play, but not going overboard with technique. I actually think her leading playing is better than Paul's. But Paul has the better riffs and rhythm playing, which has nothing to do with the episode. It was great seeing Marty Friedman. Loved his question directed to Mick. Overall, solid episode.

Episode 8: Mick Mars
(http://i.imgur.com/cTZ9poD.gif)

Guest Guitarist: Tom Keifer

What a great episode. When it comes to booking a Guest Guitarist, Tom is the last person one would think of. I have always considered him to be very underrated. He's not a barn burner, but he can play some great leads and has always been really great at coming up with riffs. I thought he played great on the show. Speaking of underrated guitar players, it's about damn time they got Mick Mars on the show. Out of all the members of Motley Crue, he is the one that I have been waiting for. Vince Neil and Tommy Lee have been done to death. We don't need another hour of THEIR soundbites. Nikki Sixx is by far the best interviewee from the band. But as great as he is, I'm glad TMS went with Mick instead. What few interviews I have caught of him over the years, they have always been insightful. He has a lot to say and he didn't disappoint me at all here. Would love to see him return to TMS as a guest as well as Guest Guitarist in the future.

Guest Guitarist: Chris Caffery

Meh. This wasn't a horrible episode. It's just not memorable. I've seen a million Dee Snider interviews and he always has something to say. Never dull. But in this one, through no fault of his own, everyone seemed to be phoning it in. I doubt I will ever bother to watch this episode again. Also, didn't really care for Caffery's guitar playing at all. Average episode. Now bring on Peter Criss!

Episode 10: Peter Criss
(http://i.imgur.com/SW1TShG.gif)

Guest Drummer: Richard Christy

This is the one episode that I've been waiting a long time to see. Ever since the RARHOF debacle and the fall out from Team Gene and Paul refusing to play with Team Ace and Peter and the constant b*tching from all sides via Forums, Twitter, Facebook and radio shows, I was very much looking forward to hearing what Peter had to say about it all. The only problem is....not very much was said beyond acknowledging that KISS got inducted. There was no mention of backroom politics from the Hall or the KISS camp. There was no elaboration about whether or not Peter was asked to perform with the current KISS line up. It's not till the very end does Peter get to say his piece and it's nothing new that we haven't already read in print a thousand times already online. Other than that, it was a typical interview where they also addressed the show he played with Ace a couple of months back. The show was good, but it would have benefited from having Ace on hand as promised. Sigh. We are left with what could have been.......

My TOP 5 70's KISS Songs are:

1 Love Gun
2 Do You Love Me
3 Rock and Roll All Night
4 Strutter
5 Black Diamond

The Throwdown: KISS Alive! vs. KISS Alive II

When I was a kid, it was Alive II and NOTHING could touch that. But as I got older....and wiser, in spite of it not really being "Live", I have come to appreciate what Alive! did for the band. Overall, I just think it's a better performance on vinyl. So, Alive! for the win.

Peter Criss (TMS Rank the Rock Segment)

Get More: Peter Criss, That Metal Show

After the episode, I headed straight to the bonus clips to see what they cut out of the episode. Having just watched Rank the Rock, what the f*ck were the guys at TMS thinking to cut this out? This is actually the best thing about anything that was recorded. They dropped the ball big time here. As much fun and cool as this segment is, I have to totally disagree with where Peter ranked them. Yes, it's HIS choices, but it doesn't mean I have to agree with it. I rank them as followed: Destroyer, KISS, Rock and Roll Over, Love Gun, Hotter Than Hell and Dressed to Kill. Really don't get how Peter would have DTK in the #1 slot. Right now, both Paul and Gene having just watched this segment are saying "see, he is still on drugs and can't be trusted to perform at a high level......".  :P

Hey I gave it 4 stars too.  I liked the show.....I was very bummed Ace wasn't there because I was very curious what his updates would be.  Peter doesn't really have a hand to play getting back in the band...so my eyes are focused directly on Ace, his new record and the road to him getting back in KISS.

Richard Christie was an interesting musical guest.  I know him from the Howard Stern show and he's very funny...he's a great drummer but I wasn't really impressed by what he did on the show...or I should say I didn't care for the choices he made...it was kind of a mess and looked like a guy frantically trying to play as fast as possible....he's much better than that...but clearly doesn't have a good sense of what might have been "cool" for his little parts.

Peter's rank the rock was very cool....I would have loved to see him do the solo records and all the way up to Dynasty

:)

I'd go Alive or Alive II...that said...I am popping on Alive II right now~!!

I was surprised he picked Dressed to Kill has his number 1.  I thought he'd have gone Destroyer or the first record.  I love Dressed to Kill personally...not a perfect record but I think the first 3 records...all kick major ass...and then I'd rank the later 3..

I think my personal order would go KISS, Dressed to Kill, Hotter than Hell, Rock and Roll Over, Love Gun, and then Destroyer.

I didn't care for Richard's drumming. As you said, it was all over the place and the thing that kept popping into my head was Animal from The Muppets.

They should have had him rank Psycho Circus. I'm positive he would have put that at #2, just behind his '78 Solo album.  ;D

I like the more rock tracks the best....and I'd also say the Alive II versions have more balls.  just my perspective.

throw Alive II in the mix...and it knocks Destroyer out of my top 6

:)

what Kool Aid?

hahahah

I think Detroit Rock City and for sure God of Thunder on Alive II are way heavier and rocking than on Destroyer....Makin' Love, King of the Nighttime World, I Stole Your Love...Shout It Out Loud.....I dunno dude.

Destroyer is great...it's like splitting hairs with all this stuff.  I stand by most of the Alive II versions being more appealing to my ears/

I am popping on Alive II right now....I'll pop on Destroyer after and see where it stands for me today/

Overall I'd say Destroyer has a lot of charm....and nostalgia.....Alive II has got the muscle and energy.

I did like Alive II stuff better overall...I felt like King of the Nighttime world was a bit of a toss up....but any~who

both KICK ASS...and we both own each

win win

Episode 11: The Winery Dogs & Vinnie Paul
(http://i.imgur.com/cTZ9poD.gif)

Guest Guitarist: Yngwie Malmsteen

Watching this episode was a treat and a half. What's not to love about an episode that has The Winery Dogs, Vinnie Paul and Yngwie Malmsteen? Awesome from start to finish. It was great seeing my favorite new band the Dogs, together on stage of TMS. Really looking forward to them writing more songs so that we can get the next full album from them. Only downside is that the band didn't stick around for the entire show as they had to be elsewhere (had a concert to perform later that night). So, I give them a pass on that. Vinnie was good too, as he always is. But the real star of the episode was without question Yngwie Malmsteen. I've become very jaded when it comes to Axe slingers. There are so many out there that they kind of cancel each other out in the "impress me with what you got skills". Watching Yngwie tear it up was.....amazing. We even got a full performance by the man at the end of the show. Really liked that he worked some of Echo Etude into it as well. THIS is exactly why Vinnie Vincent NEEDS to do the show. Have an interview with the TMS gang and then perform for the fans at the end.

Episode 12: Joe Satriani, Artie Lange and Jim Breuer
(http://i.imgur.com/cTZ9poD.gif)

Guest Guitarist: Yngwie Malmsteen

Wow, back to back days of fun. Another treat indeed and what a way to close out the season. As soon as I saw that Joe Satriani was the main guest, I was very eager to check out the episode. But the bonus was also finding out that Yngwie Malmsteen was back as the musical guest. It's always fun to watch one Guitar God watching another Guitar God performing, so I got a huge kick out of seeing Joe (mouth hitting the floor) as he watches Yngwie do his thing. This particular moment always takes me back to an original thought I had back in High School and that was "What would Jimi Hendrix have said about his peers had he lived to see what he started?". I'm sure Jimi would have been all over players like Joe, Yngwie, Vai and Van Halen. FYI, Breuer was a laugh riot. Damn funny!
