The Cove has been on my radar for the last couple of years. There was a lot of positive heat about the Documentary detailing the slaughtering of Dolphins in Japan, specifically a Cove that has been hidden from public view. That is until the makers of this doc managed to infiltrate this heavily guarded secret. But for whatever reason, I just kept forgetting to check with my Library to get me a copy. Ironically enough, it was the heat that Blackfish was generating last couple of months that prompted me to finally get my name on the waiting list for The Cove.
Whether you think this is a propaganda film, who the f*ck cares. If it shines a light on such horrible practices and is the catalyst for changing what is happening to these dolphins, I'm all for it. Anyone that questions whether this film is authentic or that it has somehow been manipulated to only show you the horrors of what's going on seriously needs to shut the f*ck up. Hey, if it sounds like I'm mad, well, I am. I've seen parts of the film here and there when it was active on the talk show circuit. But it goes to another level when you're seeing the entire movie and what takes place was very upsetting for me.
As for how the movie is constructed, it is first and foremost a doc. But it actually plays like a 'Heist' flick with a bunch of activist plotting and implementing their way into the cove to set up hidden cameras to finally get their incontrovertible truth to share with the rest of the world. It was a weird dichotomy of being fascinated and enthralled by what they had come up with, knowing full well what was waiting at the end of the tunnel. This is an absolute must-see film. Definitely check it out. One last thing, there is what looks to be a "helicopter" shot of the infamous cove and I was wondering "why didn't they just go that route instead of all the cloak and dagger stuff". Well, stay to the very end of the end credits to get your answer.
