About the only thing I knew about Captain Phillips was that it was based on a real life event, that Tom Hanks was in it and that a lot of accolades went to Barkhad Abdi who eventually got a Best Supporting Actor nomination. Other than that, I was coming into this with no prior knowledge. This has been on my Hold List for quite some time. The movie does start out slow, but if you stick with it, the intensity starts to elevate higher and higher the deeper you get into the story. Overall I thought this was a solid movie and the 3rd Act alone makes it worth checking out. One thing surprised about the movie is that the most pivitol scene, the one that absolutely nails it comes at the very end when Captain Phillips (Tom Hanks) is being tended to by the ships Doctor. Watching him kind of losing it, trying to comprehend what has just happened and thinking only about whether his family knew he was safe made my eyes well up. I was not expecting that at all. I'm a baby. Definitely worth a Rent for sure and I agree that Abdi was fantastic in what is his film debut.
One thing that I thought was cool was that when I was watching the movie, I kept saying to myself "this looks like a Paul Greengrass movie", and that's meant to be a compliment to him. Paul has a certain style all his own and this fit right into it. So beyond watching the movie, I was actually waiting for the end credits to see who the director was and sure enough it was Greengrass. And no, I never bothered to look at the front or back covers of the DVD to see who the director was.
