Re-Making the '80s: Halt and Catch Fire

I am very much looking forward to this. It's been on my radar for the last few weeks and the more I see different promos, the more I want to see it now. It just looks so damn cool. Premieres June 1, 2014.

I watched the sneak peek last night and thought it was pretty good. Wasn't sure if this was suppose to be based on an historical figure or a specific moment that occurred in the computer world (it's not), but that doesn't take away from enjoy it. It looks and sounds great. While watching the Pilot episode, it takes awhile for them to pinpoint exactly when it's taking place. Sure, we know it's in the 80's given the fact that the chick is playing Centipede (which brought back memories of my youth), but when the characters walk out of Return of the Jedi, it gives us a definitive moment in time. That would be 1983. Awesome soundtrack. Really dig the music. Obviously based on just one episode, I'm still unclear just exactly what the intent is for the show and where the characters are heading. I'm on board (pun intended) for the time being. I like the group of actors they rounded up for this too (Lee Pace, Scoot McNairy, Mackenzie Davis, Kerry Bishé and Toby Huss). Lets just hope that Pace has finally found a project that doesn't get cancelled so soon (Wonderfalls, Pushing Daisies).

Still a bit unclear as to where they are going to take this series. It would seem that it would have a very short shelf life if they complete the Clone within this season. And if they don't complete the clone by the end, it would seem like it would get a bit long in tooth if they stretch it out for too long. Also still trying to get a handle on what the characters are about. Is it about Lee Pace's character purposely ripping off 'Steve Jobs' by being the ultimate Salesman and nothing more? Or is it about Scoot McNairy's character being gullible to believe everything he says? Maybe it's a little bit of both. Regardless, I'm still enjoying the series so far.
-
I am watching this and enjoying it with a few reservations also. While I enjoy the white tank tops lets get another female in there. We are seeing more of the wife thats good in my mind. The 80's set in a cubical they are going to have to do some great dialog.
Im going to hang with it see how it plays out.

Glad to see that someone else is watching this show besides me. I agree that they could add another female character. Right now, it seems that cast is actually too small and insular. As for the Wife, I actually think she is going to be the missing key to their success. She did after all come up with the idea of splitting the motherboard which basically gives birth to what the Laptop would look like. The gay sex scene (off camera) took me totally by surprised and it felt completely out of left field. It's only later do we learn why it was there: to sabotage the buyout, which was a great character revelation. It shows Lee Pace's character as someone that will do ANYTHING to further his dream. I don't think Steve Jobs would have gone down that road for Apple.

Yea the man on man kiss I could have done without, but like you said Chip it was to **** the investor off. I have my guard up for what call the 6 feet under formula. X amount of boy girl, X amount of girl girl and X amount of boy boy. I see this in a bunch of shows. Game of thrones being one.

Solid episode. I'm glad they are moving the Wife's story along a bit faster. I knew that she would be key to the survival of the company. But based on this episode, I can see where her story line is going. There is going to be festering resentment down the road as she becomes more and more vital to the company, but she is going to be marginalized, which will cost her her marriage because I see Gordon taking all the credit from Donna. I liked the twist at the end when it's revealed that Joe MacMillan orchestrated the 'system wipe-out' all for the sake of getting some press in a magazine. I wasn't even expecting that at all. I thought it was a nice touch at the very end when Cameron is literally handling each floppy disk with kid gloves so as not to risk another "wipe-out".

I like that they added a few more people to the cast. Still need more chicks though. Too much of a sausage-fest if you ask me. Even though I liked this episode and what was presented (back-story of MacMillan's father, Gordon's relationship to his step-father, Cameron orchestrating her own promotion), I feel that this could be a problem if they keep the pace this slow. People in general will get frustrated and leave the show if they don't get something immediate.
-
I've gone far enough I'll stick it out to the end of the season, looks like we are half way. Budget cant be too high wonder at how many viewers they cancel.
I like the show I hope it sticks around.
-
I too hope it sticks around and will ride it to the end of the season. I don't know what the numbers are, but since this is a cable show, the numbers are already super low compared to the Big 4 Networks. I just think that due to the pacing, it will turn off more viewers than what they can hold onto, and that's a bad thing.

I really liked this episode because each of the main characters got to shine a little bit in their own respective worlds. Joe finally show some emotion in trying to connect with other people. Just odd that it would be with two kids. He doesn't come off as a kid person for sure. Cameron is starting to see how the game is played and I liked that she was able to usurp any "power" Gordon thought he may have had simply by kissing him in front of their co-workers. Gossip trumps authority any day of the week. And speaking of Gordon, I got a kick out of seeing him on a never ending quest to secure a Cabbage Patch Doll. I was just a kid when they hit in a big way. I never saw the appeal of them at all, but my Mom was on her own mission to get one for herself. She, Gordon's journey was in fact very similar....minus breaking into a store mind you. ;D

Really liked this episode. Cool to see D.B. Woodside pop up. Was hoping that he would have a recurring role on the show, but the ending was a bit ambiguous. He says that he is dying, but that he has agreed to make the case. So, is he just giving them the design, or will he be at the place of business during the computers construction? It would make a great divide if he does stick around because Cameron clearly would have trust issues with them being a "couple" or whatever they were implying. Not something I would have thought possible about the character. They sure are giving his background a workout for sure.

I love how they metaphorically blew up their company by having the feds raid the place and confiscating everything that wasn't bolted down. If you're gonna put your characters through some very hard times, this is the way to do it. I loved how at the end, everyone came together for the common goal, including Donna. Now we are off to the Computer Convention, with their portable PC that Gordon was savvy enough to steal from the office before the feds could get to it.
-
Probably my favorite show of the summer I am enjoying the Last Ship but this has it beat out.
Will they save the company, will the pc be a hit, will they just be a big joke at the convention? Love that the wife pulled a fast one one the grand parents and is going with them had me fooled. To the convention in the family truckster yehaa.
-
Yeah, I was totally expecting Donna to walk given that they had set it up brilliantly by having her pining away for her boss. The packed suitcase had me anticipating a big fight and meltdown. I agree that Catching Fire > The Last Ship.

Great and I mean GREAT f*cking episode! Easily the best episode so far this season. Sh*t man, I was glued to everything that was going on, hanging on every word that was being said by everyone. My mind was racing before the episode started because I was trying to figure out what could possibly go wrong once they got to the Computer Convention. The only thing I could think of was that someone was literally going to walk into their room and steal the GIANT. So, once they were walking the floor, I immediately noticed that Donna, Joe, Gordon and Cameron were not carrying their pride and joy with them. And then you hear the commotion and that's when I knew it would be revealed that someone else was showing off their creation.
Almost. It was actually even better story wise because it tied up some loose ends that I didn't even know were loose ends to begin with. Having Donna's "Boss" turn out to be the devil in disguise was a genius move on the part of the writers by having him steal their idea and then pawning it off as his own. Having his sidekick turn out to be Donna and Gordon's neighbor, even more so. Just when you think the episode can't get any better, after they still came away with happy investors, the Macintosh reveals itself at the same con. The look on Joe's face was priceless at the realization that he had just compromised not just himself and Cameron, but the computer as well. I can't wait for the Season Finale next week! I really hope this show gets picked up for Season 2.

My biggest concern going into Halt and Catch Fire was exactly how long could they sustain the series if it was just about building a revolutionary computer. Well, after watching the finale, it has got legs if it wants to go further. I wasn't expecting them to shift the focus from hardware building to software creation, but I should have seen it coming as it mirrors real life. I like the idea of splintering the team and having them go their own way to some degree. You have Joe who is still searching to create something groundbreaking. You have Cameron quitting Cardiff and taking all the coders with her to start her own company: Mutiny and having Donna join in as well. And you have Gordon who is completely lost at what to do next now that the PC has "shipped".
Overall, I really liked the episode and the end kinda left it open to come back as well as work as a stand alone Series Finale if you want to look at it that way. Now the attention turns to whether AMC has the balls to renew this for a second season. If they don't, I'm gonna be one p*ssed off dude. Bring it back! With that said, as much as I like the series, I'm not confident in AMC bringing it back. This is the same network that continually tries to nickle and dime their biggest property The Walking Dead. What chance does Halt and Catch Fire have with the mindset like those running their company? Doesn't help that the ratings for Season 1 have been less than spectacular.
-
Nice post about the final Chip. I enjoyed the whole season. The 1984 episode was great . Is this an AMC property? Love to see it go on but I dont think the ratings are good. Will buy the season when it comes out.

Article I read recently about why Halt And Catch Fire needs to continue. (http://www.cultofmac.com/290448/halt-catch-fire-must-see-geek-tv-cant-let-die/#E3AIMhwUWTmlkSEh.99) Do you agree/disagree with the points brought up?
-
Ever since the finale aired, I have done searches every couple of days looking for anything regarding AMC renewing the show. With each passing day, my hopes for a second season are dwindling. I want.......no, NEED it to come back. The show may feel familiar in some aspects, but it's truly something fresh and original that we are just not getting anywhere else on TV, Cable or Streaming. That alone makes it a canidate to continue on. If AMC doesn't have the sack to pony up, then hopefully Netflix or Amazon or whoever the f*ck else is out there and come in and save the day. Everything in that article is what I have touched up on throughout the season, so therefore I agree with the article. Actually, it agrees with me. ;D
-
Article is dead on I LOVE the music in the show. A huge part of it is this was me -I did not build computers- but I was there man the little statement about pre aids hits home. I do hope AMC recognizes the secondary market for this show -OnDemand DVD sales- and does the right thing.
-
Considering that's how Breaking Bad found it's audience, I really hope that's what's going through their minds. Personally, I want it to be renewed just because I don't want to watch the first season and find out that's it.

Don't deprive yourself of watching a great series regardless if it comes back or not. It's very satisfying from start to finish. As I mentioned earlier, the Season Finale works as a series finale.....to some degree, but it is open ended. If you're worried that there is a major cliffhanger that doesn't get any kind of resolution because it doesn't come back, fret not.

So I was checking out the backlog at "Art Of The Title" and saw the Halt and Catch Fire opening for the first time. Love that!
The article goes into detail about how they came upon the idea and style of the credits, definitely worth a look. (http://www.artofthetitle.com/title/halt-and-catch-fire/)
