I haven't decided yet if I will go this year. This is a common theme for me. I always say the previous year is my last and usually the week leading up to Comic Con, I get bit by the bug and end up going. Even if I don't go inside this year, I may head down there just for the photo ops and test out my new Nikon. We shall see what happens...........

Between the lack of funds and the fact that it's impossible to get tickets, I haven't gone in quite some time.  Still, it would be so awesome to have a Penny Can meet up.  And go to a strip club.  Then realize the movie ones are much better and decide to do something else.

One of these days we have a Penny Can Convention with everyone here. All 5 people! I'd make sure to hit Deja Vu, Cheeta's and Hustler's (formerly Pacer's). We wouldn't be there to partake in the decadence. Purely for the intent of casting Strippers for you movie. I want a Producer's Credit.  ;D

As for Comic Con, I am spoiled in that I get to live where it takes place and can get in each year whenever I want. But going to it year in and year out, it does take it's toll on my brain. Thinking back to the first couple of times I went and comparing those times to what it has become now is just mind boggling. It's not even close to being the same event as it once was. I might come off sounding like I'm complaining about what Comic Con is now. That's not the case. Just pointing out that to step inside the convention center now is just a case of sensory overload. It does take me a few days to unwind from EVERYTHING that goes on and that is just one day. To think that when I first started going, I went all 4 days. You couldn't even pay me to do that today.

I only started going to the parties last year (outside of the inaugural Totally Rad Show party in 2007, I was in attendance then).

You know, we've probably run into each other at some point and never knew it.

Even if I won, I couldn't afford to buy all the cool **** that's there... I was just thinking that because I'm going to a smaller con and going over the cost of autographs and toys (and suitcase space) and realize it's gonna be a small bag o' swag coming home with me.

You should enter and if you actually win, you can sell the tickets for a nice profit. These tickets are ALWAYS in high demand, especially for those looking for last minute access to the Con.

Will you be trying to pull that one off?

ABSOLUTELY!!!!

Craiglist would be the place to sell them off fast locally. And make sure it's a cash buy. None of this writing checks bullsh*t!! Well, let me correct myself. I'd probably give it to RenoJim so he can take his daughter since he wants to go. If he couldn't use them, then I'd sell them.

People try to post date the checks long enough so that they can cancel out of whatever they are paying for which of course f*cks the seller over.

SDCC | Batman, ‘Arrow,’ ‘The Flash’ and more cover ‘TV Guide’ (http://robot6.comicbookresources.com/2014/07/sdcc-batman-arrow-the-flash-and-more-cover-tv-guide/)

If I do end up going, I'd for sure would scoop up all the cover variants. With that said, the last couple of years, they have not been giving them away. Haven't seen any stands at all. Prior to that, TVGuide and Entertainment Weekly would have stands all over the place and people would load up on them, which I did. But yeah, the last 2 years they have been MIA.

Budgeting my con trip for next month (I hate that now if I go, it'll be partly out of spite)... the thing that sucks about budgeting is that if you can't afford to go, you know exactly how much fun you're not having.  I've noticed that a bunch of the autographs I want to get are from girls I used to have the hots for.  That could backfire on me.

As expensive as this might be, that money's not really doing any good just sittin' around.  In three months I'll still be the same boring miserable sad sack I am now, a grand and change in the bank ain't gonna make that much of a difference.  And of course, I won't get credit for being responsible for deciding NOT to go for my own reasons.  Apparently I can't be trusted to take a shuttle from an airport to a hotel and then back two days later.  Why would I be insulted, my family thinks I'm baby Buster.

I wonder... if I really buckled down and worked if I could get ALCD done and Blacklist-ready by the 20th August.  If I'm INSANE enough, maybe I can have a second script ready to go.  Have some feelers out there to work while I'm out in Burbank trying to enjoy my seething self.

I hate having to budget things. When you said that you know exactly how much fun you'll have, truer words have never been spoken. Which Con are you referring to that happens next month?

A little place I like to call None Of Your Business Con.

Seriously, it's just a little con in Pasadena called Morphicon, I wanna go because a bunch of the old Power Rangers will be there and I always wanted to meet them (especially before they get TOO old)... and if you saw some of the gorgeous women in attendance, you wouldn't judge me.  Look up Ciara Hanna, Melody Perkins, Jessica Rey, Christina Masterson, or Erin Cahill if you need proof (hell, Erin knows my sister, I wanna get Erin to help me pull some sort of prank on Em, I just don't know what yet).  AND the dude I storyboarded that flick for, HE'S gonna be there with his whole cast for what might be the last time for a while, if I EVER had an in to meet and hang with those guys, it's NOW.

The thing is, I want to go alone.  I've done all the individual steps alone, but never all at once.  This part is what made me realize that my family thinks i'm baby Buster from Arrested Development.  No faith or trust that I can do this (I'm f*ckin' 30).  Even though I've flown to California before (to the same d*mn airport), taken shuttles to and from places (pretty much the ONLY transit I have to do the whole weekend), and walked the streets of New York at midnight alone AND wandered around Paris by my lonesome without speaking the language.  It is such a ridiculously safe trip by comparison to any other trip that I've taken, right?

BTW, I know that wanting to go to this convention in the first place is stupid and childish.  I'm not asking anyone to understand why I want to do it or even approve of me wanting to do it, I'm certainly not asking anyone to pay for it (I will point out that the convention is RIGHT before my birthday and no one in my family has ever had a clue what to get me), and I'm not asking anyone to tag along.  That would be selfish and childish, "come with me, just in case."

I just want a weekend to myself.  No family (especially not NOW), none of this Catch-22 garbage that's seemingly infested EVERY part of my life, no need to network with anyone if I don't want to, no comparing myself or my talents to anyone else, no stress (I want to plan the whole thing out so I can relax).  I haven't had a trip where I haven't had to actually DO anything (and yes, I consider sh*t like weddings or family get togethers work) in... forever.  I don't know when.

Two thoughts here. No, three. Budgets, Passion and ya can’t take money with ya to the grave.

I’ve learned over the past 15+ years, and wish I learned a lot younger to budget and save. It becomes a habit and I think of it very little. It’s all in place and I know what I can and can’t do.

Which is a set up for the other two thoughts. We all know you can’t take money with you to the grave, or anything for that matter. So do what you want to do now, while life is good. If you have a passion to do thing A, go do it, especially if it’s within your grasp. If you have to cut back here or there, so be it.

I know life can be way more complicated than that sentence, but I truly think if you ‘really’ want to do something, go for it.

I've been avoiding spending as much as possible for as long as I could in anticipation of this trip... especially because when I first brought it up, the response "I think you should."  Seven months later, it's "you don't still want to DO that, do you?"  A very derisive, dismissive sneer.

I would feel guilty about taking a little trip while I'm not working, but I feel guilty about all kinds of stuff all the time.  I just feel like I would get grief for it.  I'm a real closed book so it's not evident to everyone else that I'm anxious, stressed out and depressed all the time.  I feel like if I go, I'm gonna get sh*t when I get back about not having a job... and I've been avoiding that for a long while.  I've got more faith in my abilities as a writer than my family does, and way more faith that my writing can get me an actual income than Walgreens or whatever.  I just feel like there's going to be misery no matter what I do.

And worse, at the best what's happened is my whole trip is tainted.  If I go, part of it will be defiance and a middle finger, and that ruins it.  I'd be going, in part, to prove something, and I'm better than that.  AND it'll be seen as me being irresponsible for taking a trip alone or for spending that kind of money when I'm not working.  And if I do the calculations and decide NOT to go, I won't get credit for making a responsible choice.

Watching the morning news, which is taking place at Comic Con and just seeing the shots outside of the convention is INSANE! It's only 7:30 am right now and the place is overrun by a sea of people and the doors don't even open until 10 am. Whenever I go to Comic Con, I always leave the house very early and get down there by the same time and it has always been moderate. But today it seems like EVERYONE has the same idea. I may have to leave even earlier tomorrow. I want to spend time checking out all the Special Zones across the street from the Convention Center so that I have an idea where everything is at and I can hit those later in the day.

Don't forget, live coverage starts today at 1pm Pacific Time. Not sure why it's starting so late given that the doors would have been open 3 hours already. You would think you'd want minute to minute coverage all day.

Soooooooooo f*ckin' tired! As soon as I got home, had early dinner and then fell asleep for about an hour. My legs are killing me! I had fun for what I was able to do. But overall it was kind of a bust. I had a checklist of books I wanted to get. Out of all the f*ckin' vendors on the planet, I came away with one book from my list. I did pick up Campbell's Ruff Stuff Sketchbooks Volume 3 and 4. I spent most of my time also trying to hunt down the Walter White and Jesse Funko Pop Toys. EVERY Vendor was sold out. These are/were SDCC 2014 Exclusives. They actually had a few other Exclusives as well for Hannibal, Stan Lee, etc... But it was Breaking Bad that I was after.

As far as crowd control. It was HORRIBLE! Whoever decided to move around display booths from the previous 4 years should be fired. They bunched all of them dead center and didn't care to check what schedules others TV signings were going to have. When the Walking Dead came out......DEADLOCKED from all sides. You couldn't pass to get to the other side. When Game of Thrones came out....DEADLOCKED! Same problems. A lot has been side that for San Diego to retain Comic Con, we have to expand the Convention Center. But I don't think that's going to fix the problem. With any amount of added floor space, they are going to fill them up with even MORE vendors. The problem is that they are overselling the tickets with no regard for capacity.
Title: Re: Comic Con 2014 (July 23-27)
Post by: Neumatic on July 25, 2014, 08:24:41 pm
Every time you say "DEADLOCKED!" I hear Phil Hartman's Admiral Scarsdale.

Yeah, crowd control is nuts at Comic Con, it was terrible when it was good.  I'm amazed that there aren't scientists and mathematicians looking at SDCC and trying to design the best flowing street design possible.  If we can cure SDCC, we can cure traffic and city planning worldwide.

I have the first two Ruff Stuff books-- are the new ones worth getting?

Hell f*ckin' yeah! I actually didn't have plans to get them at all this year. And then I saw a video sample on Facebook a couple of days ago of someone flipping through it. It caught my attention. When I landed at his booth....flipped through it in greater detail and forked over the cash. Both books are also slightly bigger than Volume 1 & 2 which means more art per page.

So I promised my daughter for H.S. graduation we will be there, 2016 for those scoring at home. I can sell some stock in july 2015 to pay for tickets and what will be a overpriced hotel I'm sure. But I'm good with that. Probably be putting out feelers for advice in a year or so.

Does Wizard World have a big turn out? I'm not expecting Comic Con proportions or anything. The fact that you are getting Big Name celebs does tell me it's somewhat big. The guy that plays Crixus is Manu Bennett. FYI, he has a pretty big part on Arrow as he plays Deathstroke.

I have no Idea what to expect for a fan turnout. Sad commentary for my advanced  age I have never been to any con. Looking forward to this. The site is missing a few links -panels, complete list of vendors- The tv star list is good. Wish there was more comic artists, its still a few months off so maybe they will add some.

Be sure to take plenty of pics. Would love to see what your first Con is through your eyes and hear about any expectations being met or not. When I think about my first Comic Con, at the time I thought it was the "biggest" thing I'd ever been to. Many, many years later, thinking about the same Con, it seems like 10 minutes in the Laundry room, folding clothes. So uneventful by comparison now.

Costumed Female Comic-Con Attendees Ask For Sexual Harassment Protection

Quote
Female’s Comic-Con attendees dress the part of sci-fi and fantasy characters, but they say widespread sexual harassment is becoming a serious threat at the annual event.

Three women from Philadelphia founded Geeks for CONsent after being groped, followed and unwillingly photographed during the four-day event in San Diego.

Geeks for CONsent collected nearly 2,600 signatures online in support of a new anti-harassment policy for Comic-Con to stop blatant objectification of cosplay attendees.

Comic-Con Cosplayer Not Assaulted: Police (http://www.nbcsandiego.com/news/local/Comic-Con-Cosplayer-Not-Assaulted-Police-269470211.html)

There's been so much drama for the past week regarding this and because of it, many people were quick to attack and condemn Comic Con. Turns out that she fell on her own. What really p*sses me off about this is that her "injuries" were widely reported as a sexual assault. If all she sustained was injuries from a fall, how the f*ck did they come to the conclusion it was sexual assault? Oh, that's right, the media doesn't want to investigate because they know that something salacious like this will get picked up across the nation. The old axiom of "if it bleeds, it leads" is still in full effect.

Rob Liefeld: Why I Love Comic-Con 2014 – Onward! Upward! (http://robliefeldcreations.com/?p=3469)

I may rag on Liefeld's art from time to time, but that doesn't take away the fact that he is still a mover and shaker within the industry. It's great to see that he isn't jaded about what Comic Con was and what it is today. This is a great read and somewhat refreshing. For the past week I have been reading a lot of artist literally bashing and bad-mouthing Comc Con. It's gotten so bad in their hate-spewing diatribes this week that I'm even less a fan of Erik Larsen and Jason Pearson. It makes me wonder just where the animosity is coming from. Sure, I understand their frustration at parts of the Con. But they both come off as having an agenda of trying to convince as many people as they can to not go just based on their own personal failings at the show. Reading Liefeld's article just makes me want to revisit Comic Con again.

I posted the Local Newscast report as well as the RAW video of the accident. The Police are STILL trying to identify who was driving. I thought this was already solved. Apparently not.

NYCC attracts a reported 151,000, surpassing San Diego (http://robot6.comicbookresources.com/2014/10/nycc-attracts-a-reported-151000-surpassing-san-diego/)

It was inevitable. I actually thought this would have happened years ago. Surprised we kept "winning" for as long as we did.
