Title: Nicki Minaj - Hip-hop

Nicki Minaj

So bored this past late Saturday night, I turned on SNL briefly and caught a very lame skit followed up by a performance by Nicki Minaj. So watching her perform, many a thought went through my mind.

Let me preface, I know jack squat about Nicki Minaj. Career or personal life. Only the what makes news with her music or fashion statements. While watching her perform her Hip-Hop, I was absolutely cringing. I already dislike that style of music, but her high voice was definitely a head scratcher. So hearing this cartoon like voice speak poetry (hip-hop), it just looked and sounded odd. I just thought she looked so robotic. Just staring, reciting lines, doing the standard hand and body movements hip-hop artists do.

THEN….

In the middle of her performance, Minaj sings (and I’m sure some people argue hip-hop artists sing. I say they speak). I mean sings. Her voice changes to this nice smooth melodic sound. She’s closing her eyes, getting into the song. I thought it was night and day difference. My ears perked up. My eyes opened up. It was nice… but brief. Minaj closes the song with more (c)rap. Crowd goes nuts and she smiles big time.

The point of this post is it seemed to me, Minaj was really enjoying her singing. Maybe I was projecting my thoughts, but I was thinking, like Minaj, the singing was the fun beautiful part. Maybe Minaj has trapped herself into the machine. She’s doing what is expected of her by her audience she built, the studio’s, but most importantly the money she brings in.

Would she enjoy more, the singing?

My wife tends to think no, she is doing what she wants to do. She’ll sing if she wants to. This musical style is what she grew up with and knows.

Maybe

I think it’s a damn shame. From what I can tell, most of music like this genre is throwaway. It’s hot for very short time, but has a limited life. Not it sustains much value later on. If my spidey senses are right, artists like Minaj have deep down talent, but instead go for the easy buck. I’m pretty sure the general public know Minaj for her assets… not her songs.

Then again, what do I know.

It's that robotic, recite lines, nails on chalkboard voice that keeps me away. She has definitely painted herself into a corner because well, she wants to corner the market on that shrill voice of hers with regards to her rapping. She is about nite clubs and what gets people on the dance floor and money into her pockets. There will come a time where she will have to change to pure singing if she wants a long career. If she doesn't, she will end up exactly like Lil' Kim and where the f*ck is she now? I haven't seen the SNL performance yet. Was planning on watching it sometime this week because James Franco was hosting it.
