You all know that I have devoured a lot of media when it comes to Steve Jobs, be it books, magazine articles, documentaries and other film adaptations. There was no way I wouldn't continue that streak with this version as well. It didn't take much to convince me that I wanted to see this after the initial trailer dropped. It was just a question of how long it would take for my Library to get the DVD. It was worth the wait, but I was somewhat surprised at the final product. I was expecting to basically get a full-on Bio pic, much like that of Jobs (http://pennycan.createaforum.com/dvd's-blu-rays/jobs-(2013)/msg28287/#msg28287), but far superior than what that one offered. The trailer is a bit misleading, intentional or not because it's not the typical flick I was expecting. In that regard, it succeeded.
What I found fascinating was how the movie was structured. Instead of the typical rags to riches story arc, they instead went with a different framing device, highlighting 3 pivotal moments in Steve's life: the launch of Lisa, NeXT and the iMac. I would say that 98% of the movie takes place in the bowels of the auditorium of the launch and any flashbacks that occur are more snippets than a full on exposition reveals, with the exception being when Steve is fired from Apple. Prior to watching the movie, I didn't have a clue who wrote the script and then mid-way it dawned on me that it felt like it could be Aaron Sorkin behind this. With the amount of information at his fingertips, it's a pretty bold move to zero in on just these 3 moments, especially since he used Walter Isaacson's book (http://pennycan.createaforum.com/books/steve-jobs-walter-isaacson/msg5529/#msg5529) for research. The movie is great and I thoroughly enjoyed both Michael Fassbender and Kate Winslet's performances and I highly recommend this as a Rent. With that said, I still want to see Walt's book given the proper due it deserves and that eventually we will get a TV Event that covers everything in his book. Give me 10 episodes that covers everything and I'll be happy.
