DJI - Introducing the DJI Mavic

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p1d_ptE6yrc

Well, since my interests in drones is now getting serious to the point of dropping some hard cash on one, it's high time we have a thread for Drones. Starting with the DJI, based on Casey's review of it here (http://pennycan.createaforum.com/the-best-tv-shows-on-the-internet/casey-neistat/msg39170/#msg39170). HUGE BONUS for the Mavic is its tracking mode. No need to wear a bracelet or anything to get the Mavic to follow your every move. They show a brief clip of how it works and it reminds me of how the Tracking worked in After Effects. Same kind of tech. As for the price, it really depends on who or where you buy it from. I've seen a couple of sites offering pre-orders at $1k and other's at $1,300.

I'll be following what you do on this project.

Love this stuff, but not ready to get one myself at this point in my life.

Concentrating on health, bikes and music still.

Didn't see if this is a duplicate post...

Would have been better to compare a less cloudy day with better color definition.

DJI MAVIC: 4K Test Footage and My Thoughts On The Drone

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Tthf4guYCo

The video you just posted Mac, that's actually Casey's followup Vlog (http://pennycan.createaforum.com/the-best-tv-shows-on-the-internet/casey-neistat/msg39170/#msg39170) where he addresses one big issue with the quality of the film. I watched it last night and was really disappointed in the end result. It's just way to soft to my liking. Casey even says that the Phantom IV is the superior to the Mavic in regards to 4k footage. And then I saw the review by Michael Shainblum this morning and apparently everyone, including Casey, doing their own review for the product is unaware that there is a Manual Focus option that you have to enable which corrects the 'Soft' look. Check out the video and marvel at just how much of an improvement it is. Highly detailed and has reaffirmed my desire to get this drone. But the one thing I find puzzling is that you would even have to enable it. Seriously, why isn't this a default setting or option? Anyone paying over $1k for this is getting it for the highest quality possible. It's like buying a brand new car, but driving it off the lot using the spare tire from the trunk instead. Go figure.

Man, I'm thinking about cameras.... my current "nice" camera is almost ten years old, no HD features... and I'm going to Sicily next year with the fam, going to see my childhood home again, and I feel like that warrants a nice camera.  Tempted to look after the new year.

The hard part might be deciding which one. I imagine most are all really good. Just need to find the one that fits your needs. Are you already leaning towards a brand?

No, I got a couple months to decide.  Part of me has always wanted a GoPro on these things, just attach it to my bag and keep it running, but I know i'll never look through all that footage.  Plus I'm big on stills.  I think I'd want something small that takes HD video and that I could put proper lenses on, even if it'll be a while before I buy any (I actually have the lenses from my dad's old Canon AE-1 somewhere that I've always wanted to try out).

My current camera is a Canon, and I like it, as I said, it's just old and not really full of features.  I used my pocket cam and my phone on my last trip.

DJI MAVIC PRO – FIRST IMPRESSIONS | VLOG0015

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cbr9zgVIVjI

This is a good video to check out. Where most "impression" videos are edited down for time constraints and feel rushed, this one makes you feel like you're really getting a feel for what the Mavic Pro can do.

So what are the current laws now regarding drones? You can fly them anywhere?
Title: Re: Drones

I know you have to register your drones and I think you have to stay clear or air traffic space by whatever distance it says per state. Beyond that, I don't have any more info...just what I've heard.

Post by: Mac on October 05, 2016, 09:42:21 am
I've only heard of those things too.

I am reading stories of people taking down drones because of invasion of privacy. I've witnessed 2 close sightings recently. One was too close to my yard. No way in hell, would I want to see a drone within site of my property.

I'm sure you are going to find a certain section of the population that use their Drones for nefarious reasons.

Post by: Mac on October 05, 2016, 09:56:10 am
Ya, but it's just not the privacy thing. It's the noise thing too.

Yes, they do make noise. Like giant mosiquitos. I know I sound old, but the drone action around me sounds akin to the 4 wheel ATV action my neighbor tries to pull. There is no where to ride around us, but he runs them on occasion for quick street run or load on the trailer. Many at the wrong time, like early in the morning or late at night.

This will jump start some laws. Maybe jump start is wrong. The tech is growing so fast, the laws have to catch up.

The Dobby is a tiny drone with big ambitions

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=67GVAzCHa64

With the onslaught of 4K Pocket drones, the consumer is only going to benefit in a big way. More competition drives the price way down. Double-win! As for this one, I like what I'm seeing. The only negative for me is that you can only get 10 minutes of flight time. Sure, I could by more batteries, but I find that to be a workaround for a problem that shouldn't really exist.

Wow, 10 minutes.

I see battery life as a huge problem with today's electronics. Once we get past the huge limitations and concentrate on the actual product, I can entertain the purchase of said technologies.

$550 FOLDABLE 4K NOTEBOOK DRONE

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PzDLVx-5HSM

Casey goes a little deeper with his review than the previous post. Whatever Drone I get, it has to be able to reach a certain elevation as well as distance since what I have in mind for projects include aerial shots. This doesn't look like it could travel a city block.

You've Never Seen A Drone Like This...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a10ivcSbX14

I posted a review of the Doby a few post back and I'm surprised that it was never mentioned before, but I just noticed that there is no Gimble. That makes this a non-starter for me. Without a Gimble, there is no point in owning this drone. The purpose and a big purpose for me is to be able to shoot Top-Down video along with all the other standard shots.

GoPro recalls Karma drones due to power problems

This is not good. Brand New product and already you have a major issue warranting recalls. Not sure how this got pass quality control. Seems like this would be at the top of the list of what to look out for during its testing phase.

I do believe drones will get tinier as the tech improves...thus proving to be a huge security risk. Think about all the illicit things people will use them for to spy on others. Of course, the motorize sound coming off the drone will give itself away. But that too will get to the point one day where the sound problem will be solved.

Did you see "Eye In The Sky?"  Dude uses a drone the size of a fly.  And we already got tiny cameras in our cars, the rearview cams, you know?  The real issue will be the lev-tech and the battery tech.  I can see the devices becoming energy-efficient enough to run off a watch battery.  Shouldn't take much lift for those things to take off.

Yeah, those are purposely used as Click Bait. I would say about 95% of YouTubers do that for the intent of getting as many clicks as possible and if they have a partnership with YouTube, that means $$$$$$$$$ if they reach a certain number of page views.

6 awesome drones from CES 2017

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rt0Yps9DNkA

A couple of new drones have my interest, but the one that I'm scratching my head on is that PowerEgg Drone. It's way too big to be anything practical for those that travel a lot. I'm sure most people will not want to lug around something so big and cumbersome. Give me that drone that clocks in at 75mph though!

DJi Phantom 4 Pro+ vs. Inspire Pro vs. Mavic Pro in 4K

I like Casey's graph at the end in breaking down how each Drone stacks up to the other. It's easy to follow and useful information in determining which drone is best per your requirements.

DJi SPARK vs DJi Mavic!! EVERYTHING YOU WANT TO KNOW ABOUT THIS TINY DRONE

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nujgBunvgBI

A lot of DJI Spark video reviews have been flooding YouTube today. This is a pre-release Prototype and isn't the final version. The one downside is that this only shoots in 1080p. It's not a deal breaker for me. It just would be nice to have a 4k option. There is no dedicated controller for the prototype, so we don't get to see how it handles. Casey's review really isn't one that I would base my money on. There are plenty others out there giving it a better test in what it can and can't do. I'm still watching various reviews. When I find one that showcases this better, I'll post. But just based on what I've seen so far, I'm very encourage and at a mere $500, I can and most likely see myself buying my first drone when this finally drops. It's insane that the body of this drone is smaller than a smartphone....especially given the quality build and parts associated with this. Usually the smaller drones (which there are plenty of) are cheap and not worth the price you pay for it.

$500 Drone vs $3000 Drone - DJI Spark vs Inspire 1

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZPY7dIz0GBI

Here's the other side of Casey's video with Marques Brownlee own review.

I did a little more research. The Spark with no controller is $500, the Spark with controller is $700. That's still a pretty good deal.
