I was very much looking forward to checking out The Nice Guys for a couple of reasons. First, I thought the trailer was great and did it's job of selling me on this. Second was that I'm a fan of Shane Black. He's not perfect, but he pretty much sticks to one style of writing, which I like. Unfortunately, I think The Nice Guys is a bit overrated. I can't quite put my finger on why this didn't click with me. Was it the script? The direction? The actors? Whatever the reason was, it just left me wanting more....not because of things being "good" on the screen, but because it all just felt pointless. The story itself is exactly that. By the time you get to the end....it was all for nothing and the ending itself was a complete letdown. No real sense of a resolution at all. If you want some good Shane Black movies to watch, always go with Lethal Weapon and definitely check out Kiss Kiss Bang Bang (http://pennycan.createaforum.com/dvd's-blu-rays/kiss-kiss-bang-bang-(2005)/msg6013/#msg6013), the movie I do believe he was kind of using as a blueprint in a way. Not the same story mind you, just going for that Buddy Cop thing he does so well, but adding a lot of quirky stuff to keep you on your toes. I'm still a fan of his, just not this movie. Mind you, The Nice Guys does have its moments, just not enough to recommend as a Rent.
