How do I review Arrival without giving anything away? Well, without going into too much detail, with regards to the opening montage with Amy Adams and her kid that she loses to an illness, the framing device is for all intents and purposes a misdirection and it worked because I thought I had figured out the entire movie within those few minutes and then spent the rest of the movie trying to guess where my theory would come into play. Nope. That leads me to the twist ending and that too worked brilliantly because by the time you get to the end, I immediately started replaying the entire film in my mind because it now takes on a completely different take. So, with that out of the way, Arrival is a thinking man's "Alien Invasion" flick in which Amy and Jeremy Renner's character have to race against time to thwart an impending war by first teaching and then learning the Alien language to communicate with them. I highly recommend this for sure. I'd definitely watch this again. Wish we would have gotten more Forest Whitaker in this one.
