Pilot

Damn, I can't remember much of this series at all and in a way, I'm happy about it. This way, I get to fall in love with the show all over again. I just can't believe how long it's been since it went off the air, which to this day is one of the biggest crimes against humanity. That and Freaks And Geeks. But that's a story for another time.

The Pilot sets up the tone of the series extremely well as Angela Chase (Claire Danes) is looking to find her own identity, one that is not based on what other's want her to be. He statement about what Yearbooks represents couldn't more on point on how they don't represent what and how school made us feel back then when she says it's "...it's not even what really happened, it's what everyone thinks was supposed to happen. Because if you made a book of what really happened, it'd be a really upsetting book." With Angela breaking out on her own, she of course is drawn to the school bad girl Rayanne Graff (A.J. Langer). It's easy to see why Angela who has led a straight-laced life would be fascinated with her. She is out breaking curfew, drinking, hitting parites and socializing. But with it comes consequences of getting into trouble with authority figures and alienating former friends Sharon Cherski ( Devon Odessa) and Brian Krakow (Devon Gummersall) because they aren't "cool" enough to hang with anymore. This of course leaves them feeling really insecure, leaving them to think they did something wrong to be dropped in the manner they are.

Just like Angela is attracted to the idea of doing things not expected of her and being "bad", it's not till she gets "arrested" that the school bad boy Jordan Catalano (Jared Leto), whom she has had a crush on for awhile, takes notice of her for the first time. It's all about perception and the roles we play in High School to build you up to be something your not, which goes back to what she was saying about the Yearbook and what it represents. Even though she reconnects with her Mother, she still feels the need to keep the image going the next day at school by perpetuating the myth behind her "arrest" to attract more kids at school, which it does, expanding her circle of "friends".

If you are a fan of such shows like The Wonder Years and Freaks and Geeks,  this is an absolute must-see for you. Check it out, you won't be disappointed.

Dancing In The Dark

The main story revolves around Angela's parents deciding to take a Ballroom Dancing class in an effort to reconnect since their marriage has hit a rough patch. In the Pilot episode, Angela stumbles across her Dad talking to another woman late at night out on the street. It doesn't take much to figure out that there is something going on between them. So, in Dancing In The Dark, Graham Chase (Tom Irwin) confesses to his brother Neil (Danton Stone) about the other woman that is pursuing him. Up to this point, the plot is kind of run-of-the-mill standard that you have seen on most shows. It's not till the very end when Angela overhears her father "breaking it off" with the other woman over the phone and see her in the next room. No words are spoken from here on out.

The other half of the episode is about Rayanne setting up getting a fake ID from Jordan for Angela, in an effort to create a moment for the both of them. This worked in theory, but not practicality when Jordan does in fact make his move on Angela. Only thing is, he is moving faster than she likes and quickly rebuffs his advances. See, she is not such a "bad girl" afterall.

Guns And Gossip

Rumors are a funny thing. Regardless if they are true or not, it changes things. In the case of Angela, she is the victim of a rumor going around the school and beyond that she has had sex with Jordan, which she clearly wants to dispel as false. In the case of Rickie (Wilson Cruz), who is the victim of bullying due to his sexuality, he wants nothing more than to have people think he is carrying a gun so that bully's will leave him alone once and for all. Both of these incidents are connected to Brian, who happens to have started the rumor about Angela and he was also a witness in the hallway when the gun went off.

The school Principal wants nothing more than to make the school feel safe by getting to the truth about what Brian may or may not have seen regarding the gun. Over the course of the episode, the Principal becomes more invasive and threatening in trying to coerce a confession from Brian till evnetually he finally stands up to him with threats of a lawsuit for harassment. It's at this moment he realizes what Rickie is going through now that he himself is a victim of bullying, just as she saw the damage he had done to Angela about the rumor when she confronted him on it earlier.

The gun issue is never resolved since Brian keeps the truth to himself. The kids at school think nothing of it, that all is forgotten and it's going to just be another day at school. That is till they all arrive at school and now have to walk through a metal detector. Yup, rumors changes things.

Father Figures

Mother and daughter are both trying to deal with their own Daddy issues as best as they can. Angela's mother Patty (Bess Armstrong) is trying to reconcile with her own Father (Paul Dooley) who resents her for taking over the family business and Angela herself is trying to come to terms about what her own Dad (Tom Irwin) may or may not be doing with another woman on the side. A lot of tension between all four of them. They kind of reconcile at the end, but not really. It's more true to life if everything isn't wrapped up in a big red bow.

The Zit

Yup, this episode is exactly what it says it's about. Angela of course is suffering from being self conscious of her looks and zits just complicates it all the more. On the flip side, Sharon is having to deal with boys staring at her because of her...ahem..."twins". So, they both have something common given that they are dealing with issues that make them think they are attractive. So instead of seeking comfort in each other, they tear each other down.

It's only at the end do they actually start to bond and remember being good friends. It sucks that as soon as Rayanne enters the picture, Angela feels the need to just shun Sharon once again all for the sake of keeping up "appearances" of looking cool.

The Substitute

By law, it's required that every series set in a school has to have an episode where a Substitute Teacher comes in and takes over the class and changes the students so profoundly that they finally wake up and start thinking for themselves and revolt when that teacher is dismissed. Whether it's The Wonder Years, Freaks And Geeks or Veronica Mars just to name a few, this series is no exception in having that kind of episode. Mr. Racine is the "odd" teacher that doesn't stick to the same formula of teaching and does things a little differently which yields results. Obviously the students respond in a positive way while the staff does not, particularly the schools Principal, who I think is still a d*ck.

How good was Mr. Racine? Good enough to get Angela to defy the Principal and good enough to get Jordan to stick up for him and tell people he was the best teacher he ever had. This coming from the kid that doesn't know how to read.

Why Jordan Can't Read

The answer to that question regarding the title of the episode is never really addressed. But it does set up a misunderstanding between Jordan and Angela when he finds and returns a love letter she had written to him on a class field trip to the museum. She wanted to know what he thought about the letter and it dawns on her that he can't read. Later, this leads to their first "real" kiss and everything seemed to be on the upswing for them as a "couple". But what goes up, comes down when he stands her up the following day because he didn't want to meet her parents. I thought the whole exchange between the two of them when she was asking him out on a "date", followed by the aforementioned "meet the parents" request  was spot on. It was awkward, scary and exhilarating, which made the scene all the more better because of it.

So they finally give Danielle (Lisa Wilhoit) something to do other than jumping around and reciting a cheer-leading cheer by having her getting a crush on Brian. It was cute but weird. Why would anyone get a crush on him of all people? He comes off as a stalker with the way he looks at Angela. Some would say it's pining, I say it's something more. And speaking of Brian. I get that he has a major crush on her, but who the hell keeps popping up at someone else's house unannounced and using the "return my book" excuse to start a conversation only to start yelling about whether or not Angela and Jordan are a couple? And to do it with Angela's parents in the house just makes it more unbelievable.

Strangers In The House

This was one of the more stranger episodes of the series. Pun intended. With Sharon's Dad having a heart attack and ending up in the Hospital for surgery, it sets off a chain reaction where everyone around reacts to the news in their own way. Sharon's boyfriend blows her off when she needs comfort, so then she seeks out Brian, which leaves him thinking there is a potential for a relationship between the two. Angela's mom has Sharon staying over at their house to take care of her while her Dad recovers. Sharon then uses Brian to make her boyfriend jealous (implied) but to also flaunt it in Angela's face...in her own bedroom no less.

Sharon just rubbed me the wrong way with how she was acting, not because she was scared of losing her father, but the fact that she feels entitled to sympathy from everyone and when Angela doesn't give it to her, she acts out on it regarding Brian by inviting him over. And getting back to Brian, who later is over at Angela's house, he takes it upon himself to answer the phone. Dude, who does that? No one is calling for him. He has no boundary issues at all. And even if the Pizza guy is calling back, he still should not be answering the phone. Just sayin'.

Even though I liked the reconciliation scene between Sharon and Angela at the end of the episode, it doesn't change how off putting most of the episode was. Still a good episode though, just....strange.

Halloween

This was not one of their better episodes. It's one thing to have the kids break into school after hours for some cheap thrills on Halloween night, but it's another to have Angela conversing with a Ghost of s student who died a long time ago. This definitely took me out of the story and in a way cheapened the episode because it wasn't sticking to the type of stories being told up to this point and was out of character. Having said that, there was one winning moment where Danielle (Lisa Wilhoit) dresses up as Angela as her costume. Her impersonation of her was spot on and got a laugh out of me because of it.

Other People's Mothers

With a title like Other People's Mothers, you know exactly what you're getting. This one leans heavily on the parents and I can't remember this being as boring as it turned out to be. And I guess that was the intent so that Angela would have a gauge between her family and that of Rayanne's who is out of control with her drinking and drugging as she throws a house party. I found it very stupid of Rayanne's Mother to criticize her about her drinking when she obviously condones it by reminding her to drink in moderation. Really? That's what you call good parenting, allowing your 16 year old daughter to drink in moderation? Dumb doesn't begin to even describe Rayanne's mother.. With all the sh*t hitting the fan when Rayanne OD's and needs to get her stomach pumped, Angela realizes the grass isn't always greener on the other side.

But for the episode as a whole, it really was a boring one at that. And more than anything, it reminded me exactly why they eventually got rid of the parents on Beverly Hills: 90210 .

Life Of Brian

This is a great episode in spite of it being a Brian-narrated one wherein he tells us what a complete ass he is and in spite of the fact that the writer(s) suddenly wrote Jordan as a dumb stoner-dude which was completely out of character, based on what has come so far.

Getting back to Brian. He is just so f ucking annoying.  He is so indecisive and wishy washy about everything. It has nothing to do with him being a teenager with a lack self confidence. It's just that he comes off so condescending to others when he doesn't get what he wants. He was a d ick for treating Delia like that by dumping her as soon as he thought he had a chance with Angela at the school dance, a chance that he fabricated in his own mind.

At least Delia and Rickie had a cool moment at the end when they were the stars out on the dance floor. When What Is Love stated playing, I half expected to see the Butabi Brothers appear. (http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i266/Chiprocks1/Smilies/0%20All%20Smilies/HTL_wink.gif)

Self-Esteem

How did Angela and Jordan go from just "knowing each other existed" from the last episode during the dance to suddenly making out in the school's Boiler Room? The writers completely jumped the whole process of getting them to this next level with awkward dates and all that. Yeah, I know that kids in school do exactly that. But this is a show and seeing those moments helps make a series what it is. Just sayin'.

It's too bad that Jordan shuns Angela in public because he is embarrassed to be seen with her. Why? What could he possibly be embarrassed about with her? I dunno. With the threat of losing her, he finally manage to man up and take it public down the hallway. Props for the song that plays during this closing scene. It really made it much better. It took long enough, but now they are starting to give Rickie something to do other than just following Rayanne around.

Jordan wants sex. Angela wants sex. Not gonna happen. She is scared. That's pretty much the entire episode in a nutshell. I did find it particularly amusing that Angela ends up talking to Brian of all people  about sex without the knowledge that her father was laying on the couch in the next room, hiding from being seen so as not to embarrass her and most likely himself. I'm sure he was mortified and relieved at the same time when Jordan came over and she told him that it wasn't gonna happen.

On The Wagon

Angela and Rayanne's friendship is on the outs, but who's to say why. Is it because of Rayanne's increasingly odd behavior because she is on-the-wagon or is it because at times the actress A.J. Langer's portrayal of her is a bit manic? Whatever the case may be, this episode had Rayanne on full extreme mode and was really irritating. It was embarrassing watching her "sing" with Frozen Embryo's. Out of the debacle that was her debut as a "singer" came 30 Seconds To Mars. (http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i266/Chiprocks1/Smilies/0%20All%20Smilies/HTL_wink.gif)

It may sound like I'm bashing on A.J., but I'm not. I actually like her as an actress. But she was way out there in On The Wagon, most likely to high-lite the chaos of trying to stay sober and still be the "life of the party". I'm sure it doesn't help that she doesn't have a conventional family. It's not gonna help matters much when her own Mom is still drinking margaritas in front of her for breakfast.

Resolutions more or less picks up where we left off from So-Called Angels. With Rickie now staying with the Chase Family, he overhears a coversations and misinterprets that they don't want him around anymore. Needless to say this sets off a chain reaction where Rickie finds himself homeless again, refusing to stay at a Shelter. It's revealed that his teacher who has taken an interest in him from a few episodes back because he could see that Rickie was looking for some guidance. The episode ends where Rickie shows up on his doorstep....

The scene with Jordan and Brian was somewhat humorous now that he is tutoring Jordan how to read and he will return the favor by teaching him how to get phone numbers from chicks. Ha. Good luck with that. He probably couldn't even ask a phone operator for a number most likely.

What do you get when you put two drunks in the same place? Drunken sex of course. So, Jordan and Rayanne hook up. Even though Angela is "over" him, there's a line you just don't cross when it comes to your friends and clearly Rayanne stepped over that line and now has to pay the price of the silent treatment from Angela and Rickie.

A.J. Langer who plays Rayanne did a pretty good job and finally gave a performance worth noting in a very understated turn, especially the scene at the end where she shares the stage with Angela during a reading of Our Town. As good as she was, Claire Danes heartbreaking moment is tops here. I'm not entirely sure if it was acting because when she starts to cry, that quivering jaw says it all.

For a Danielle-narrated episode, she really didn't factor a whole lot into the story that was taking place. With the parents away up at a ski lodge, the kids have the house to themselves and get into an adventure involving handcuffs, a bedpost and lots of time to kill. There was one particular scene that was funny in which Brain is leaning over Rayanne who has handcuffed herself to the bed and he is trying to pick the lock to get her out of the situation when Kyle, the boyfriend of Sharon walks in on them and sees Angela, Danielle and Rickie watching. He quickly exits the room and then listen to the conversation outside the door. A lot of innuendo, or what is taken out of context comes off as innuendo. It's a page right out of Three's Company.

As for the adults, it was really weird and boring story. Bah!

Jordan enlist the help of Brian in trying to win over Angela for "cheating" on her. At first Brian is against feeding words to Jordan that could drive Angela further away from him and closer to Jordan. But in a moment of clarity, he realizes that this may be the only time he will ever be able to express his true feelings for her and proceeds to write the be all, end all of love letters, which he gives to Jordan to transcribe into his own handwriting. Sure, enough, once Angela reads the letter, she falls in love with Jordan all over again.

You can imagine how crushed Brian feels inside having to see the two of them together again...because of his words that he put to paper. But it's Rickie, who mistakenly tells her about who wrote it that brings Angela back to Earth, which leads to a very touching, poignant scene between Brian and Angela at the end. In a roundabout way, Angela is able to get Brian to admit that he wrote the letter and instead of being furious, there is a look of implied devotion on her face, that she could actually fall for him. The moment of course is ruined when Jordan comes into the picture and whisked her off in his car. But as she drives off, that look still remains on her face...

That's the cliffhanger. And that's why it's hard to rationalize the cancellation of this series. So many what-ifs about My So-Called Life. It just sucks it had to end on something like this. It also sucks that Claire Danes herself is more or less the reason why it was cancelled because she had made it known that she didn't want to continue on with the show if it came back for Season 2.

:::sigh:::

Also, Tino reminds me of Buster Bluth in that he is neither seen nor heard. (http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i266/Chiprocks1/Smilies/0%20All%20Smilies/HTL_wink.gif)
