My Original Review

Funny thing. I wasn't a fan of GNR when the video for Welcome To The Jungle first dropped on the airwaves of MTV. I was still in the throes of the glam era of metal and this was just to hardc*re for me. Haha. I'm kidding. These guys hit me like a ton of bricks to the face, that's still being felt to this day. This is the greatest debut of any artist in the history of music. You will not find a better debut with such a lasting impact than Appetite For Destruction IMO.

Every damn song has a purpose here. There isn't a wasted 3 minutes to be found. There's really nothing I can say that hasn't already been said about this album, other than a personal story about it. Back in the day, one of my friends "hardest/heaviest" groups he would listen too was.....Huey Lewis And The News. I s hit you not. He considered them to be a hard rock band to the fullest. Enter moi. I turned him on to Appetite. He converted. Suddenly he was obsessed with GNR and then moved onto Metallica and others. My job was complete. Hahahaha.

Personal Fave songs: Welcome To The Jungle, Mr Brownstone, Paradise City and that uber power ballad Sweet Child O'Mine.

I've been playing this album non stop since the day it came out. Can't believe its been that long.

My Latest Review

Appetite For Destruction. Has there ever been a more cataclysmic debut by anyone else in the history of the record industry? I think not. Personally I think Appetite For Destruction is the single greatest debut ever for any band. It's very rare you find an album that is both commercially and critically acclaimed. The album is the best-selling debut album of all-time worldwide, totaling 28+ million units sold. :jawdrop:

There are so many great tunes on AFD that to me it's a Greatest Hits set. From Jungle to It's So Easy to Mr. Brownstone to Paradise City to one of the greatest ballads of all time, Sweet Child O' Mine. I put this right up there with Motley Crue's Home Sweet Home. Man, I remember first time learning the opening lick to Child and thinking I was the coolest motherf ucker on the planet.

Fave Songs: All of 'em Co-MVP goes to Welcome To The Jungle, Paradise City and Sweet Child O'Mine

The album cover, no matter which one you go with is heads and shoulders above most covers out there. I definitely rank it in the top 10 of all time. Inner Sleeve Side A (The one on the left) was the original cover, but due to it's graphic depiction of robot ****, the record company settled for the eventual replacement. And even the replacement is nothing to sneeze at. Top 10 baby!!

GN'R Lies isn't what I would call a great record by any stretch here. But it's not bad either. Originally I picked it up for Patience. Sure it wasn't the best GN'R song ever, but I liked it enough to go ahead and get it. Over the years the song just keeps getting better and better IMO. Acoustic Guns is definitely a 180 degree turn, coming off of AFD.

This record is basically 2 EP's put together. The first 4 songs come off of their independent released EP Live ?!*@ Like a Suicide. The other half of the album is 4 acoustic songs that comprise GN'R Lies.

Fave Songs: Patience, Used To Love Her, You're Crazy and One In A Million. MVP goes to...Patience.

Album cover is meh. But props to the inner sleeve. (http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i266/Chiprocks1/Smilies/0%20All%20Smilies/HTL_biggrin.gif)

My Original Review

Quote
How the f uck does any band follow up Appetite For Destruction? That's a damn near impossibility. I really didn't know what to expect from Use Your Illusion I and II at all when I went to pick it up at Midnight when it dropped.

As for this UYI I, it was a good album, just nowhere near that of AFD. It had its moments, but the first half of the record is just above average. It wasn't until the 2nd half that we got some good sh*t, namely November Rain, The Garden, Don't Damn Me, and probably the best cut on the album, Coma.

I seem to have a love/hate relationship with this one. Sometimes I love everything about it and other times it just seems meh. At least the first half of it anyways.

Personally I just prefer UYI II over UYI I as it has my favorite songs from the double CD.

My Latest Review

The above review pretty much sums it up for me. One thing about going to the Midnight opening for Use Your Illusion, I think this is the only time I have ever done so for an album release. There may have been another one or two, but I can't recall at the moment who they were. But for this one it was pretty cool because I went straight to Tower Records right after work and there were tons of people already waiting in line with a couple of news crews filming and I ended up running into a long lost buddy (Richard) of mine who I hadn't seen in years. We ended up talking a lot about music while waiting in line to get into the store. We talked a lot about Ozzy Osbourne and the No More Tears album.

As for Use Your Illusion I, the problem with it is that it's way overproduced and that all falls on Axl's shoulders. And the mix is another thing that did (still does) bother me regarding Izzy Stradlin's guitars which are non-existent. Also, the overall feel and style of this one is a drastic departure that allienated a ton of fans. I for one have just accepted the fact that AFD was a one in a million album and no matter how hard the band tried, would never ever be able to equal it. So I just accepted UYI for what it was/is. I do think that UYI I is the ugly stepchild of the two albums. Others may disagree.

Fave Songs: Live And Die, Don't Cry, November Rain, The Garden, Don't Damn Me and Coma. Co-MVP goes to November Rain and Coma

Album cover is meh. It's easily recognizable for sure. But they could have put a little more thought into it. This was after all their first full album to follow their mega hit AFD.

My Original Review

Quote
A lot of people for some reason prefer Illusion I instead of II. Not me, I find this one to flow better and have better songs. It might be that II was "bloated" and that long time fans gravitated to the other one because it was as close as it was going to get to AFD. As for Illusion II, it was and is over produced with epic songs that to the average listener would say are way too long in run time: Civil War, 14 Years, Estranged. Not to me. I love that they are longer than the normal song. I don't want 2 minute songs. Leave that to the Ramones.

Personal faves: Civil War, Yesterdays, Knockin On Heavens Door, Don't Cry and my all time fave for both Illusions...Estranged.

Side note: This was the first and last time I ever went to Tower Records (or any other record store for that matter) at midnight to get the first copies sold to the general public. It was fun. A lot of people showed up. It was very festive, party-like atmosphere. The local news was covering the whole thing. Need to find VHS tape of me on the news.

Latest Review

Use Your Illusion II was released at the same time as I. Both I & II is basically a double album...sold separately. Where UYI I was written before Appetite For Destruction, UYI II was written during and after AFD.The main selling point for me to pick this up was soley for the song You Could Be Mine. I was salivating getting the song ever since I first heard it used in Terminator 2: Judgment Day.

As mentioned in my original review, I tend to listen to this one more than I do the other. Sure, it's nowhere near that of AFD, but I have accepted it for what it is. I get why both albums are not held in high esteem because I don't hold either one up to the level of AFD. Having said that, there are still some great songs on here. More so than UYI I. As great as AFD is though, I will say that Slash has some of his best solos found right here, saving his best for Estranged. Gotta give props to Get In The Ring. When I'm feeling pissy and need something get me going, this one does a damn good job. If there is one song I would drop all together it would be My World. Never have liked it and I find it pointless.

Fave Songs: Civil War, Yesterdays, Knockin On Heavens Door, Don't Cry, You Could Be Mine, Get In The Ring and Estranged. <------MVP

Same opinion about Use Your Illusion I applies here.

For those that have seen Arrested Development, there's an inside joke about both these albums that always gets me laughing because it's pretty damn funny. Read below...

Quote
The title of the album was the focus of a joke on an episode of the sitcom Arrested Development that aired well over a decade after the CD's release. When magician Tony Wonder (played by Ben Stiller) had to come up with a name for his home video, he decided to name it Use Your Illusion II, citing that Use Your Illusion I had already been taken, apparently unaware of the fact that Use Your Illusion II is also the name of an album. In the end, he used the title Use Your Allusion.

Guns N' Roses ("The Spaghetti Incident?") 1993
(http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i266/Chiprocks1/Star%20Ratings/HTL_03star.gif)

(http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i266/Chiprocks1/CD%20and%20Album%20Covers/Guns%20N%20Roses%20500x500/1993TheSpaghettiIncident.jpg) (http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i266/Chiprocks1/CD%20and%20Album%20Covers/Guns%20N%20Roses%20500x500/1993TheSpaghettiIncidentBack.jpg)

The Spaghetti Incident is a album made up entirely of cover songs. It's the last album to feature Slash, Duff McKagan and Matt Sorum. And it would be the last "Guns N' Roses" album till 2008. This is the least played album for me. I hardly ever play this one. I picked it up mainly because of the music video for Since I Don't Have You. The album is ok. Nothing great but certainly not bad. The covers basically are punk and glam tracks that the group grew up listening to. The one big thing about this album is the hidden track that contained the song Look at Your Game, Girl by Charles Manson.

Fave Songs: Since I Don't Have You, Ain't It Fun, Buick Mackane (Big Dumb Sex) and Black Leather <----MVP

I hate the album cover. Horrible. Pfftt. But the story behind it is so entertaining...

Quote
The title is an inside joke referring to a food fight between Axl Rose and Steven Adler involving spaghetti. Much was made of this food fight during Adler's resolution lawsuit with the band in 1993, in which Adler's attorney referred to it as "the Spaghetti Incident".

Guns N' Roses (Chinese Democracy) 2008

(http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i266/Chiprocks1/CD%20and%20Album%20Covers/Guns%20N%20Roses%20500x500/2008ChineseDemocracy.jpg) (http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i266/Chiprocks1/CD%20and%20Album%20Covers/Guns%20N%20Roses%20500x500/2008ChineseDemocracyBack.jpg)

This is NOT a review

This is a Guns N' Roses album in name only. It has nothing to do with any of the original band members. This should be called The Axl Parson's Project if you ask me. (http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i266/Chiprocks1/Smilies/0%20All%20Smilies/HTL_biggrin.gif)

The only time I ever heard Chinese Democracy in it's entirety was during release day and MySpace was having a listening party. At the time I thought the album was ok. It certainly didn't live up to what I had been building up for the past 15 years. But it wasn't a complete disaster either. I do remember liking a couple of songs. But that was so long ago that I really don't remember much of any of it at all. The only song that I do know really well is Shackler's Revenge, and that's only because it's on Rock Band 2.

I had every intention of getting the album the next day, but I just completely forgot all about it. Most likely will never pick this up now.

Guns N' Roses - Sweet Child O'Mine & Paradise City (Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame 2012)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rk6ELAV-64Q

I wasn't impressed with Green Day's introduction at all. As a matter of fact, I thought it sucked big time. As for the turn out, somewhat disappointed, but expected. I was hoping that Izzy would be there, but I knew not to get my hopes up on that. He is more of a recluse than Howard Hughes. As for the performances, I actually liked it a lot and I thought it was cool that they let Steven sit in behind the kit. Rough around the edges for sure, but he was having a blast.

Slash was Slash and so was Duff. But the saving grace for the 2 song set easily was Myles Kennedy. He was  f u c k i n g  awesome as he usually is. Somewhere in Rio, Axl is agreeing with me. (http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i266/Chiprocks1/Smilies/0%20All%20Smilies/HTL_wink.gif)

FYI, just to point how clueless the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame is, they can't even get the image of Duff and Slash on the Jumbo Tron right. They had it inverted, thus making both of them south paws. What the  f u c k !

At least Gilby got to play on stage. That's more than Matt, who does rock a mean tambourine!!

On a serious note, I know Axl regrets not doing this, even if pride won't let him admit it. It's going to follow him around from here on out. At least the other guys were man enough to show up. Izzy gets a pass because he is buried under a stack of newspapers that fell over him in his mansion and can't call out for help. But at least he can use this time to write some songs while people figure out what happened to him.

That's what I'm saying dude! Axl wsa probably hoping for another Van Halen debacle as far as major **** ups and seeing the band, especially with Adler on drums coming through big time is only going to eat away at him. Think about it like this, Axl has been slaving for 20 years with his version of GNR and can't get any respect (other than fans in Rio) and 3/5ths of the original band gets together for a one off show and nails it. Throw Myles into the mix who sounds better than Axl. Ouch.

That my friend is what you call a kick to the balls............

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Xf0Ll6vSWc

Talks are starting to heat up again about the long-in-demand reunion of GNR. It's all speculation at the moment, but Mitch Lafon does seem to have a good pulse on the metal scene and hearing these guys talking about what could be does leave me feeling very encourage that this could in fact happen. Saving up money right now for my $300 ticket. Ouch!! Now, which lineup would be getting back together? The Original or the Use Your Illusion lineup. Remains to be seen.

to me the only x factor is Steven Adler...I do believe he can play not sure he would cut the mustard.

Izzy had played with G n R a few times...Duff is probably healthier now...Slash check...

Steven....I would say it's a coin toss...would be VERY sad to see him omitted and fluffy hair ****y dude there...he's a good drummer...but he's not an OG./

I'd LOVE to see all the key members participate in this. You're spot on about Steven. Is he even clean these days to even consider him?

no normal person would have any idea what kind of condition he's in.

IF he was smart./.....he'd be doing EVERYTHING in his power to work on ALL the Guns and Roses material and be ready when the chance comes...I'd be posting youtube videos playing everything going....I am better than I was then kind of deal

he has to if not...he misses out on a HUGE frackking payday

Guns Ní Roses taking a 'hiatus,' says guitarist DJ Ashba (http://www.nydailynews.com/entertainment/music/guns-n-roses-hiatus-guitarist-article-1.2197280)

I heard about the GNR "hiatus" a few days ago, but I'm just now getting around to posting this. I think with all the rumors circulating about a potential GNR reunion with the original lineup is what has prompted Axl to shut his current band down. I don't think it has anything to do with non-stop touring and that leads me to this cool mini-doc.....

One Man's Plan To Reunite Guns N' Roses

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3n_f_JOkU9E&list=PLp2e7UfInEgmB-5r4rtQOEsq-H-mNmQhk&index=29

Just hurry the f*ck up and reunite already!!!

I heard that yesterday....honestly them being active the last 10 years or whatever it's been really hasn't been all that interesting anyway.

The guitarist for NIN was in  the band years back and that was actually kind of fun to revisit those old live clips...this new band really hasn't done much for me past that.

was listening to a pretty awesome interview with Slash yesterday on youtube....with Howard Stern...well worth checking out and some good laughs with a great interview./

It should be called Slash's Axl
:)

No Adler...no reunion.  If Izzy doesn't want to be there that's his call.  Steven does and should be allowed to participate.   Supposedly Duff doesn't care for him...although Matt seemed to get on Duff's nerves too if you watch the Velvet Revolver making of the band.

I won't go see this tour.  All 5 original in, I am there 100%...any other version its an easy pass.  Which pains me to say.

I agree 100%. It has to be THE ORIGINALS. None of this Van Halen sh*t where Axl lets one of his illegitimate sons play as the drummer.

It would be great to see Axl and Slash play together.  I respect G n Roses mach 2, with Sorum, and Gilby....but I already saw that...and the original line up.  I choose the 5 guys who started the band.  That was magic and I feel would be magic live again.  Axl has these delusions of grandeur like they are Queen or something....2.5 hour set.  It's grossly bloated and totally unnecessary.  I'd prefer a 90 minute set...3 or 4 encores...maybe a few new covers pulling the full show to 2 hours maybe a little less....it's perfect.

Oh and go on stage at 9 pm.

I'm thinking show starts at 4 am and ends sometime next week. No bathroom breaks either. If you need to p*ss, just point a camera at Axl, watch him end the show and then you can go to bathroom.

If I was Adler I'd be at the gym every day.  I'd be playing the drums 6 hours a day 7 days a week with a teacher.  And I'd be posting youtube videos of me doing it....showing how focused I was...how healthy I was...he cannot miss this chance.  I'd hire an assistant with drug rehab credentials to be my handler on tour.  Kind of like Metallica hired on that shrink....pay for it out of my own pocket etc.

Past all that.  I'd be curious how much more Axl gets than even Slash.  It's down to brass tacks on this.  If a show makes say 5 mil. (Take home) I bet Axl will get 3, Slash 1...Duff will get like 100K-300k tops..For Slash it's more than he's making now....same for Duff.

Axl still can tour the world and play huge festivals and pay each replacement  guy 30k a pop in the band per show...this just ups the numbers.

Most people younger than us won't give a **** it's the original 5...they already go see the Axl version...at least this is closer to the real thing.

Izzy Stradlin won't perform with reunited Guns N' Roses (http://news.yahoo.com/izzy-stradlin-wont-perform-reunited-182959928.html)

Guns N' Roses to Begin Reunion Run With Intimate L.A. Concert Tonight (https://www.yahoo.com/music/guns-n-roses-begin-reunion-run-intimate-l-170900026-rolling-stone.html)

Even though my interest in this reunion has subsided a bit due to the fact that it's only 3/5 of the band, I will for sure be checking YouTube tonight for people uploading clips from the show. That is if it actually goes off. It's April 1st, so I'm not entirely convinced it's going to happen. We shall see.......

Slash tears it up too....does Slash every take a full on guitar solo...?  I guess the Godfather theme and that part is his solo...

it's interesting because Slash is kind of low key on these shows...even sitting down I find myself really following what Axl does all the time/

Axl Rose Explains Why Izzy Stradlin Isnít Part Of GNíR Reunion, Izzy Calls Bullshit (https://www.yahoo.com/news/axl-rose-explains-why-izzy-104149833.html)

Ah. This is definitely eye opening. I just figured that Izzy was never contacted about rejoining GNR. Well, reading between the lines of what Izzy said via Twitter, apparently he was asked, but would not be paid equally. This sucks. We have a chance for a full-on Reunion and it comes down to money standing in the way. Axl, you're f*cking this up. How much money do you really need?

*Sigh*

EDIT: Posting this IN THE GNR THREAD to see if it goes through this time. Crosses fingers.

This looks great. But $700 is out of the question. But this isn't even the big "news". Speculation is that all 5 original members will finally get back together to tour behind this. Now THAT's worth $700!

I honestly thought it would be $1200 or maybe more.

All the swag is unnecessary to me.  Some is cool and others looks a bit junk and kind of like way overkill filler.

Still cool and if the og5 get back together that's great!!
