With my current kick on Disaster Flicks still in full effect, I decided to bust out ID4 which I haven't seen in a long while. I remember when me a a few friends went to see this on opening night...the midnight showing and the place was packed. You could feel the electricity in the air. Everyone was so into this because the hype for the movie had been building for so long. It was a fun night and everyone had a blast. Back then this was one of my favorite Disaster Flicks at the time. The Special FX were awesome, the size and scale of the movie was EPIC.
Fast forward to tonight. Although I have seen this quite a few times since that day, the movie is definitely starting to show it's age. A lot of the FX shots that blew me away back then look bad in a lot of places throughout the movie now. And what was so EPIC then seems rather tame by today's standard. That's what happens when movies rely heavily on FX Set Pieces like this one. Everything evolves as new techniques replace old ones and just make some things stick out like a sore thumb after the fact.
It may sound like I'm bashing ID4, but I'm not. ID4 is still a fun movie to watch and get lost in it's escapism. I'm just pointing out how we movie goers are definitely spoiled with each new release as the FX get more impressive and the Set Pieces get longer, almost to the point of overkill. I think that's why I'm still feeling the post-movie orgasm of 2012 (http://pennycan.createaforum.com/dvd's-blu-rays/2012-(2009)/msg5089/#msg5089).
In spite of Harvey Fierstein annoying voice and Randy Quaid's over-the-top hammy acting, this is still a Buy for me as I'm sure that I will watch this again and again in the future.
