(http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i266/Chiprocks1/CD%20and%20Album%20Covers/KISS%20500%20By%20500%20Large%20Scans/1978AceFrehley.jpg) (http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i266/Chiprocks1/CD%20and%20Album%20Covers/KISS%20500%20By%20500%20Large%20Scans/1978AceFrehleyBackCover.jpg)

Ace Frehley Poster Insert

Of the 4 solos albums, I had absolutely no expectations for Ace Frehley's effort. Zero. Nada. Zilch. And that's only because up to this point he had only had lead vocals on 2, count 'em, 2 songs!!! Those songs of course being Shock Me and Rocket Ride.

Imagine my shock (pun intended) when I first played this. From day 1 and all the way up to today, it was/is heads and shoulders above the rest. I'll even go one step further and say that if the entire band of KISS had played on this one with the same results, THIS would get the honor for Best KISS Album Of All Time. They didn't, so it will have to settle for Best Solo Album honors instead.

Straight up this album f*cking rocks! From the opening song of Rip It Out to the closing notes of Fractured Mirror, it's a winner. The biggest hit of course was New York Groove which still kicks mucho ass to my ear, which was a cover version from the band Hello. Me love song long time.

It's just mind blowing that Ace had stage freight about singing for the longest time. This totally wiped it all away (pun intended). Even Gene Simmons (the one with the monumental ego and full of himself attitude about any and all things related to his namesake) has gone on record saying "Ace Frehley's solo album is the best of the bunch". If Gene can admit to THAT, there's something to be said about the quality of Ace's songwriting here.  This coming from Gene, who would be the first to tell you HE is the greatest songwriter of all time.

Fave Songs: All of 'em. But like before, I gotta give them all a shout out here (pun intended)  Rip It Out, Speedin' Back To My Baby, Snow Blind, Ozone, What's On Your Mind, New York Groove, I'm In Need Of Love, Wiped-Out and Fractured Mirror.

Fun fact: The reason for these solo albums was that during the filming of KISS Meets The Phantom Of The Park, both Ace and Peter had made their intentions known they were qutting the band to pursue their own personal music career. They compromised and decided on these 4 solo disc. It didn't help as much as just prolong the inevitable.

Freebie trend continues with a Poster insert that is 1/4th of a larger poster that connects with the other 3 solo album posters ala a jigsaw puzzle. This was by far the best looking poster of the 4.

Album Cover kicks ass!!

My Original Reveiw

Quote
When Ace left KISS, I had been anticipating the release of his solo venture. Seemed to take years for it to happen. And when it finally dropped, I wasn't disappointed at all. From the first single "Rock Soldiers". One of the coolest drum intros ever. I was hooked. This was a completely different sounding Ace, guitar-wise that is. It was more current, in line with the day's shredders of that year.

My only thing I had to get my head around was the inclusion of Tod Howarth. I couldn't understand why this dude was getting to sing on the record at the time. Ace wanted a band, and not to be viewed as a "solo" record. Overall it's just a kick ass record.

But this has one of the weirdest songs I had ever heard: "Dolls". The video is pre-album version and really can't compare to the final version on the record. If you ever get the chance, check it out. It's a trip.

As he did on his KISS Solo record, he continues with his all instrumental song "Fractured Too", which is so far from either record sonically, and oh so cool.

Updated Review

Whenever I listen to this one, it instantly takes me back to 1987. So many great albums came out that year that it was overload to me. And Frehley's Comet was one of my favorites that year. Love this one a lot. Ace didn't disappoint me when it finally came out. He had left the band back in 1982 and he still kept his identity hidden from the rest of the world till this finally came out.

So, I couldn't wait to see his first music video for Into The Night, where I would FINALLY get to see what he looked like. It was definitely a head trip, more so than seeing the other guys because the wait was much longer.

Fave Songs: Rock Soldiers, Into The Night, We Got Your Rock, Love Me Right, Dolls and Fractured Too

Album cover was and is meh. Nothing groundbreaking here.

Chip's Original Review

Live + 1 is exactly that. It's a 5 song EP with 4 being live versions of Rip It Out, Breakout, Something Moved and Rocket Ride. The last song is a working demo for Words Are Not Enough. The demo is ok. This release was a quick fix between his first album and the upcoming second full LP release.

Fave Songs: No real stand outs here with them being live and 1 demo.

Album cover is what it is to tell you it's a live album. No music videos were released for this album.

Chip's Original Reveiw

Quote
Pretty solid followup to his last full length album. It's more of the same. Just that Anton Fig does not play on this one. He wouldn't return until Trouble Walkin' album that follows this one.

Stand out songs on this one are "Insane". Hot hot hot Nurses in the video is always a good thing. Also "It's Over Now" is another great song. I actually try to avoid listening to this one as much as I can, because it always turns into an earworm that last for 2 weeks non stop. But Tod Howarth really got to shine on this song and the guitar solo is ****ing awesome. Works perfectly with the rest of the song. Give it a listen and curse my name when you get an earworm. I warned ya. My favorite song though has gotta be "Juvenile Delinquent". Great crowd sing-along-song.

"The Acorn is Spinning" definitely ranks up there for originality. How to describe this one. It's an instrumental, but it's not. What we get are 2 dudes in the background talking about a boxing match, making a bet, watching the fight, and what happens afterwards. I guess you can say its a soundtrack to what is happening with the 2 dudes telling the story about the match. No singing here. Oh forget it, you just have to hear for yourself to understand it.

Updated Review

The above review pretty much sums it all up here.

Fave Songs: Insane, It's Over Now, Juvenile Delinquent, Fallen Angel, Separate and The Acorn is Spinning

Album cover = Pfftt!!! Boring. :shake:

My Original Review

Quote
Ace never puts out anything that sucks. And this record is proof that he was by far the most talented musician in KISS. Interesting thing about this record is that he also released the single "Hide Your Heart" a month or so apart from KISS' Hot In The Shade album that also had the same song on it. It was written by Paul Stanley, but he let Ace do his version of it. I don't know which version I prefer as they both sound pretty much the same with slight variation on Ace's version.

Peter Criss, Sabastian Bach and Dave Sabo from Skid Row guest on this record. And Anton Fig returns too.

I just can't believe that it's been 20 years since this record came out. He hasn't released anything in those 20 years either. Damn!. It will be nice to get my hands on his just completed album Anomaly, that's due to hit stores sometime in 2009.  He makes Axl Rose seem prompt.

"Fractured III" continues the saga that he started all the way back in 1978. This one is a little more hard edge compared to the other 2, but it fits well as a whole in the series. Checking the track list for Anomaly, he will be continuing it with "Fractured Quantum". Nice.

Updated Review

With the release of Trouble Walkin', Ace had "disbanded" Frehley's Comet and taken on the name of...well himself, even though 3 of the 4 members are still within the band. Out is Tod Howarth. Back in is Anton Fig on drums who was replaced on Second Sighting with Jamie Oldaker. Also still on board on bass is John Regan and Richie Scarlet takes over the spot vacated by Tod.

Fave Songs: Shot Full of Rock, Do Ya, Hide Your Heart and Fractured III

Album cover is pretty cool and worlds ahead of all the Frehley's Comet covers. This isn't the best cover out there. But a step in the right direction.

My Original Review

Quote
Daaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaamn! Anomaly f ucking rocks!!!! This is so unlike Ace, song writing-wise & guitar playing-wise. And that's a good thing. His playing and writing sound contemporary and relevant. It's so easy for an artist that's been around as long as he has been to just resort to his bag of tricks that got him here. The songs are full of hooks and tasty licks. Suck on that Gene and Paul!!!!! Today has been a great f ucking day for music in my ears!!!!!

Updated Review

Sheesh! 20 f ucking years between releases! Well it's been so long for Ace that the lineup would of course not be the same. The only person returning here along with Ace is Anton Fig on drums. John Regan is MIA on bass, replaced by Anthony Esposito.

A Little Below The Angels cracks me up. Only Ace can get away with writing a song like this. And I absolutely love it. Quite possibly the MVP of the album for originality. Song reminds me of Dolls in a way.

Fave Songs: Fox On The Run, Genghis Khan, A Little Below The Angels, Sister and Fractured Quantum

Album cover is pretty cool. I like it. As far as I know, there were no videos released in support of the album, which sucks as there are a couple of songs that need one.

Really cool interview with Ace during the Anomaly Press Tour for the album. Nothing groundbreaking or revealing here. Just cool to hear Ace talk abgout whatever. Also cool to see him demonstrate his new and improved 'Smoke Bomb' Les Paul. I can't recall any of his other guitars with the orange light to make it appear as if it were on fire which does a better job of selling the illusion.

It's crazy, but listening to Tommy Thayer's song on the new KISS album Monster has made me want to bust out Ace's most recent album Anomaly.
Title: Re: Ace Frehley - Discography
Post by: boyinblack80 on October 22, 2012, 10:24:48 pm
just got done listening to Anomaly....it's good...it's fairly experimental in spots and lot more progressive  than the new KISS reocrd for sure...but some really solid rock songs on the record once it gets rolling.  For some reason the first song or maybe 2...didn't really click with me...but after the initial take off...I found a lot of the other music pretty cool....it's maybe not the most spontaneous record...but it's solid.

will post more thoughts later...gotta let this settle in a little.

Post by: Chiprocks1 on October 22, 2012, 10:41:27 pm
I know this album backwards and forwards. But I think for me listening to Anomaly tonight was ill-advised right now because even though I have Ace spinning round and round,Monster (http://pennycan.createaforum.com/music/kiss-(the-replacement-lineup)-discography/msg13258/#msg13258) is still playing in the back of my head. So, I had a lot of music competing against each other to a degree. But Anomaly is definitely more experimental as you said and it's for that very reason why I immediately clicked with it when it came out. I still love the record and I just hope we don't have to wait another 20 years to get another Ace Frehley album. That in itself is a major crime.

We are excited to announce the new album SPACE INVADER, Ace's first new solo album in five years, via E1 Music on June 24th, 2014.
The album will include at least nine brand new original songs as well as a cover of Steve Miller Band’s “The Joker.”

An official statement from Ace surrounding the exciting news:
“Life on Earth has been very good to me, and the body of work I’ve created over the years has withstood the test of time. Today I see no obstacles before me and my creativity has never been more fine tuned. Growing up in an Alien world has enhanced my senses and allowed me to succeed where others would have failed. The best is yet to come!”

Just saw this on Ace's Facebook page. Nice to finally have a firm release date and it's actually closer than I expected it to be.  June 24th, 2014 isn't that far off. Can't wait!

Ace talks about his forthcoming Space Invader album as well as what he has planned for a followup, which is looks to be an album with Covers and Remakes with special guest like Slash and Mike McCready. This would actually be a fun album to hear if he in fact can get it together and not wait too long in doing it.

Ace Frehley - Gimme A Feelin

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tjFJTZFL4fc

A sneak listen to the first track off of Ace's forthcoming Space Invaders album. The song is quite good. I dig it. But the thing that really stands out is how closely his vocals have been mixed. Vocally it sounds like this was left on the cutting room floor of Anomaly, even if the music is different. Sound-wise, yeah, very much in the same vein of his previous album for sure. Can't wait for the new album to drop, but it is coming out 2 weeks later than expected as it has been pushed back to July 8th. Ack!

I've had a few days to absorb Gimme A Feelin' and the more I listen to it, the move I dig it. It's very infectious. I get the feeling that Space Invader is gonna be a BIG f*ck you to Gene and Paul. He is out to prove that he still has 'It' and that to talk smack about his deteriorating skills is premature. Sure, I'm basing this all on one song, but if the rest of the album is anything as good as this one, he is definitely out to make a statement that he is indeed....BACK!

Not the smoothest 'Round Table' discussion I've ever seen. The both look a bit awkward to be doing this. But because I have never seen Ace do something like this, where he has a guitar and is just messing around while talking to another, this makes it an automatic must see.

Eddie Trunk's REVIEW OF ACE FREHLEY’S “SPACE INVADER” ALBUM (http://eddietrunk.com/812-review-of-ace-frehleys-space-invader-album/)

Take his review with a grain of salt here. He does preface the review by saying he is 100% impartial and doesn't allow his friendship with the man himself to dictate his review. With that said, it still comes off a like he's reviewing with kid gloves here. Look, it may be exactly how he says it is, but I will leave it up to my own listening party and tell it like it is: Good or Bad. If you check the link and see the comments below, the majority are saying it's a different album than what he reviewed. Again, their opinions. None of what they say (good or bad) will dissuade me or influence my thoughts on the new album. Wih that out of the way, how the f*ck is it that all the fans commenting have the album already? Not suppose to street until August 18th.....unless the release date was a week earlier and I didn't get the news about it. Ack!!

I want to soak it all up and see how it holds up from Day 1 to Day 7. I will post my thoughts on both extremes, covering every basis there is.

Kinda odd to hear Ace being ask to say one nice thing about Gene and Paul given the current animosity that exist between the 3. I doubt either Gene or Paul would reciprocate if asked the same question regarding Ace.

Ace Frehley - Space Invader - Deluxe 14 Track Edition (2014)

(http://i.imgur.com/oSBsgk1.jpg) (http://i.imgur.com/sA4RwYw.jpg)

Yes, I started listening to this back on August 19, 2014 (http://pennycan.createaforum.com/music/what-are-you-listening-to-right-now/msg30559/#msg30559) and I'm just NOW getting to a review for Space Invader. But there is a method to my madness here and the time between then and now is definitely warranted. So, why the long delay? Well, after initially listening to the album for a good solid week back when the album first came out, I had to step away from the album as a whole because I just couldn't put my finger on what it was that was keeping me from embracing the album as I have done with all his other releases. Sure, the album has it's share of fillers, but that wasn't what was bothering me. It wasn't until day, listening to it from start to finish that my initial gripe (that I was uncertain of back then) came to the forefront as the main reason why it was grating on me at times. It's the way he album is mixed that is definitely the problem here. I don't know if it's my ears or the headphones, the EQ or what, but if you have ever dealt with your ears popping from high altitude or recovered from being sick and you couldn't hear right after the fact, that's how best to describe this mix. From song to song you are feeling like your underwater.

Like I said, it may be an issue with something on my end. But I did test a couple of other albums and songs and they sound fine. As for the songs on Space Invader, nothing has changed between then and now in regards to what I think are the best tracks. Those would be Gimme A Feelin', Change, Past the Milky Way and Starship. There is no doubt these are the best of the bunch. The playing and arrangement for each is great and ones that I would definitely come back for in the future for a quick hit of Frehley's vibe. The other songs have their moments, be it a solo, a riff or a lick. But as full songs, not really on par with his best and more iconic stuff.  I could listen to them here and there, but they don't do the album justice.  Worth a Rent from your local library for Hard Rock fans.

As I mentioned in another thread, I'm currently double and triple dipping and buying specific Remasters of some of my all-time favorite albums. I just got my Ace Frehley '78 Solo album in the mail today and I have been rocking the sh*t out of it. I already have a few of the KISS Remasters in my collection, but not for the '78 CD. I already own both the Original Vinyl and the Original CD pressing. But the Remaster for Ace's '78 is just so f*cking good. I'm hearing sh*t that I never heard before. It's subtle, but it's there and makes a world of difference. Will be cranking this one for the rest of the day for sure.

Ace Frehley to Cover Rock Legends on New Album (http://ultimateclassicrock.com/ace-frehley-covers-album-update/)

I like the idea of Ace doing covers (possibly) of Zeppelin, The Beatles and The Stones. I already knew that he would be re-working Cold Gin and Parasite. I bet Peter is not a happy camper that he won't be asked to lay down drum tracks anywhere on the album.

I just checked to see what the full Track List is for Origins Vol. 1 and it's one song in particular that has me salivating: Rock and Roll Hell. This songs comes off of Creatures of the Night. Ace Frehley Looks Back In Pride: An Interview with Space Ace (http://www.theaquarian.com/2016/04/06/ace-frehley-looks-back-in-pride-an-interview-with-space-ace/)

Great interview, but I found it to be somewhat like Ace throwing himself on a grenade. First he talks about being open to rejoining KISS and saying it's up to Gene and Paul to make it happen and then in the very next breath he is bashing them for trying to shove Fake KISS down the throats of fans. I'm pretty sure that's not going to go over well with Gene and Paul.

video starts (and my apologies for the slow reply...I was working and really busy)

ok the video starts and you see these two Paul Frehley and Stanley Eisen...or or or....Ace Freaking Frehley and Paul the starchild Stanley...and I am grinning from ear to ear....I mean...I am not sure my face good smile more....."how long it's been?  too many years......think we got it?  we still got it...

f*** yes you DO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

people can talk smack about Ace and being chubby or old or all the like low blow comments they throw on him (some deserved...he lived a good chunk of his life totally out of control)....BUT this is what it looks and sounds like when two people with magic combine for a track...it's just "there" you feel it...it sounds rights....that x factor of Rock goodness...caresses your ears......ROCKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKK

man what a great track.  I won't say more...but daddy like!

:)

The thing that makes the video epic for me is in fact that the song kicks major ass. Ace's solo is some of the best I've heard from him in years and Paul's voice hasn't sounded this good in 20 years if you ask me. Simply put, this is the best "KISS" song in years. I'm sure Gene is kicking himself for backing out of working with Ace on Origin's and I'm sure both Paul and Gene are now trying to iron out some sort of way to reunite with Ace....and Peter. As for the video, especially the opening shot, what KISS fan is not gonna like that? It was awesome.

What I want to see is a small tour with the Original members, sans the makeup and pyro. We don't need that. Just them, the songs and a stage. That's all I need. That's all they need. Also, touring without makeup would actually be a a way to sell it because the original band has only performed once without makeup (MTV Unplugged Session). When, not if, but when it happens, I will be there regardless of how much money it will cost me.

very nice.

I likes it too.

funny because at first I was like...this sounds like 3 or 4 other Ace songs...but then I have to remind myself it's "rock and roll" and not like...Led Zeppelin where every song
was it's own adventure....

but by the end...the true character of the song kind of took over the more familiar stuff and it was fun on it's own.

funny too because when I saw you posted about Ace...I am nearly sure he's playing here tonight up at whatever that club is past Del Mar.
