Pulp Fiction is a great f ucking movie for obvious reasons. The Characters, music, writing and dialog and of course the way it was edited or what I call fractured/nonlinear storytelling, which by the way was how it was written on the page. I think this appeals to a lot of people, certainly the writers out there as it spawned a zillion copy cats. Some were good, most were horrible because they didn't "get" why Pulp Fiction worked so well.

One of the cool things about Pulp Fiction is in the way you can kill off a main character Vincent Vega (John Travolta) and still bring him back to "life" because of the way the film is edited. It goes full circle. The beginning is the end and the end is the beginning. This was a very influential movie for me because I myself started to write my versions of Tarantino because of Pulp Fiction, which is saying a lot because comedy is what I like to write more than anything. So for a movie to get me to go outside my comfort zone is saying something.

So why is Pulp Fiction so groundbreaking? Namely, it's because it shattered the Hollywood formula of how to write and edit a film. Gone were the 'story beats' of structure. How many times have you watched a movie and instinctively known how it would play out? That's because your brain has been hardwired to see these 'sign posts' coming a mile away from countless hours spent watching movies over the years. That's why Pulp Fiction to me is a revelation because you don't know where the story is going. You can't see anything coming because the familiar structure is nowhere to be found. Obviously he wasn't the first to use this storytelling device, but he did it in a way that appealed to a lot of people that were looking for something new and fresh at the time.

A lot of people like to criticize that Pulp Fiction is all talk and no action. In the hands of someone else, 'all talk' would most likely bore the sh*t out of the viewer, but Quentin Tarantino has a way of writing dialog scenes that are engaging and reveal a ton of things about the character without it sounding like exposition.

I highly recommend this as a Buy for those that are writers, filmmakers and movie going fans.

I have grown to really like Pulp Fiction. Like Kill Bill, I initially poo-poo'd anything Tarantino did, because well, I was stupid. I now find a lot of his stuff very entertaining.

I should get this.

I stopped by the 2nd one and it was completely shut down. All post lost forever. Could care less about going back to the first one and don't intend to.
