Glorious Win...

Let's start this off with a amazing win by a father who has stepped up to the plate. This is perfect in every way.
I want to meet those folks saying this is abuse. Seriously? Abuse? How?

Snow Patterns (http://www.mymodernmet.com/profiles/blogs/simon-beck-snow-art)

Quote
Artist Simon Beck must really love the cold weather! Along the frozen lakes of Savoie, France, he spends days plodding through the snow in raquettes (snowshoes), creating these sensational patterns of snow art. Working for 5-9 hours a day, each final piece is typically the size of three soccer fields! The geometric forms range in mathematical patterns and shapes that create stunning, sometimes 3D, designs when viewed from higher levels.

How long these magnificent geometric forms survive is completely dependent on the weather. Beck designs and redesigns the patterns as new snow falls, sometimes unable to finish a piece due to significant overnight accumulations. Interestingly enough, he said, 'The main reason for making them was because I can no longer run properly due to problems with my feet, so plodding about on level snow is the least painful way of getting exercise. Gradually, the reason has become photographing them, and I am considering buying a better camera.” Spectacular art for the sake of exercise

This is freakin' awesome

Cyclist spots stolen bike on Craigslist, steals it back

Quote
Danny Lesh is an avid cyclist -- and now he's also somewhat of a vigilante, after he found his stolen bike online and managed to get it back.

Lesh's Cannondale hybrid was stolen after he loaned it to a friend who'd secured it with a cable lock, which are easy to cut if you're a theft with a pair of boltcutters handy.

But Lesh located the bike on Craiglist shortly after last weekend's theft -- his bike had a prominent sticker on it, so he was certain it was his.

Read the original report at NBCWashington.com
Advertise | AdChoices

The ad asked for $100, and Lesh called the police, who told him they wouldn't be able to respond right away. But Lesh, who'd paid $600 for it back in 1998, wasn't about to let someone else end up with his bike.

"I knew I had to do it that day, or else I'd never see the bike again," he said.

He arranged to buy his bike back. A man came out of an alley at 5th and Longfellow streets NW with the bike, and Lesh took it for a "test ride."

Lesh simply rode off without paying.

"This guy finally started calling me, and left a message saying he was going to call the police," Lesh said, laughing.

When Lesh got home, he put up his own post on Craigslist, warning other site users about the thief, saying high-end bikes listed for low prices could be stolen.

"Honestly... I couldn't help feeling bad for all the other people he'd stolen bikes from," Lesh said.

D.C. Police advise citizens against trying to recover stolen property on their own, but Lesh was glad to rip off the crook he says got him first.

"I'm glad that, hopefully, his business is interrupted a little bit," he said.

The story ends there, but wonder if the police could do anything further?

Awesome!

Oh, and  f u ck  the police. Like they were going to give a rats ass about a stolen bike or do anything about it. I'm glad that Lesh was able to get his bike back on his own terms.

Good Samaritan pays towing bills for woman set on fire\

Quote
By NBCMiami.com
A good Samaritan has agreed to pay the bills of a woman set alight by her estranged boyfriend, according to reports.

Breton, 34, was set on fire at a Boynton Beach, Fla., gas station and was later billed more than $500 for towing services, WPTV reported. Breton was billed after her car and her boyfriend's car, which remains under her name, were towed from the scene.

According to the station, the stranger, who wished to remain anonymous, saw Breton's story on air and decided to help.

"You're going to make me cry," Breton told the anonymous woman, according to WPTV.

The woman said she was surprised Breton was being billed and that no one had offered to help make payments.

"Perfect stranger. She didn't know me, she didn't have to do what she did for me," said Breton.

Breton's boyfriend, 52-year-old Roosevelt Mondesir, faces a charge of attempted first-degree murder for the attack.

This is awesome news. Common sense prevails.

No charges for Texas father who killed daughter's alleged molester

Quote
SHINER, Texas -- Hearing his 5-year-old daughter crying from behind a barn, a father ran and discovered the unthinkable: A man molesting her. The father pulled the man off his daughter, authorities say, and started pummeling him to death with his fists.

With his daughter finally safe, the father frantically called 911, begging a dispatcher to find his rural ranch and send an ambulance. "Come on! This guy is going to die on me!" the man is heard screaming on the 911 call. "I don't know what to do!"

A recording of the tape was played during a news conference Tuesday where the Lavaca County district attorney and sheriff announced that the father will not face charges.

Post by: Chiprocks1 on June 24, 2012, 01:31:35 pm
Well, I expect parents to react like that for a couple of reasons. A) Denial. "Not my kid! My kid is the greatest ever! They are just being kids! They don't want people to look at them as horrible parents. Too late. B) Deny everything so as not to get sued.

NY bus driver catches girl, 7, in three-story plunge

Quote
A city bus driver says he was thinking of his own young daughter when he rushed to catch a 7-year-old girl plunging three stories from a New York building Monday – an action caught on video.

"Please let me catch her, please let me catch her," Stephen St. Bernard, 52, recalled thinking. "That's all I could say. Let me catch the little baby."

"I think about my daughter, and you know, she's a little kid," he said.

St. Bernard, an MTA bus driver of 10 years, was returning home to Coney Island from his job at about 2 p.m. when he heard screams coming from a building courtyard.

He rushed toward the commotion and saw a girl standing on top of a third-floor window air conditioning unit. He immediately ran underneath the window.

"She just stood up there teetering, teetering," he said.

Bruce Springsteen strikes back over London curfew cutoff with humor, props

Quote
By Georg Szalai, The Hollywood Reporter

Bruce Springsteen Tuesday night poked fun at the London concert organizers who had cut off the power during his Saturday night concert in Hyde Park due to a noise curfew.

When he took to the stage in Dublin, "The Boss" flipped a switch on a big prop power generator, the BBC reported. Springsteen said: "Before we were so rudely interrupted..."

The music star immediately went into the last minute of the Beatles' "Twist And Shout," which he had on Saturday performed with Paul McCartney when organizers cut his power off.

According to the BBC, Springsteen also referenced the London incident several other times during the three-and-a-half hour Dublin gig. For example, he earned much applause when he emphasized that there was no curfew in the Irish capital.

At one point, Springsteen also held up a sign that said "Only the Boss says when to pull the plug."

And near the end of the Dublin show, Springsteen had a man dressed as a London police officer hit the stage and try to arrest him, the BBC said.

Teen picked for homecoming court as prank shines at ceremony

I don't know if any of you followed this last week or so, but this is so cool to hear. I do agree with some. Those bullies should have been called out and shown in shame.

Quote
In a red, ruffled dress and flowers in her hair, Whitney Kropp, the Michigan high school student picked by her classmates to be on her school’s homecoming court as a prank, took to her school’s football stadium Friday for the ceremony.

“I had thoughts about not coming, but you know what, I’m glad I changed my mind and actually came out,” Kropp told NBC News.

Kropp's appearance was met with thunderous applause and camera flashes from her fellow students at Ogemaw Heights High School in West Branch, Mich., and even members of the opposing team.

At Kropp’s side was Josh Awrey, the class of 2015’s male representative, the Bay City Times reported.

After the ceremony, Kropp, who said she had been bullied throughout her time in high school, told reporters that she was glad she decided to remain on the court.

“I’m overwhelmed," Kropp said. "I’m so happy – this is so much right now for me. The school is fantastic they treated me so well."

I didn't even know this was an issue. The repercussions if this went through would have been catastrophic

Supreme Court backs student in dispute over used textbook sales

Quote
he millions of Americans who sell used items on eBay and at garage sales, flea markets or church raffles got a big victory Tuesday in the U.S. Supreme Court.

The court ruled that copyrighted items made overseas -- and that includes not only books but also CDs, DVDs, computers, watches and anything else with copyrighted material in it -- are covered by a federal law that says a person who buys such a product is free to turn around and sell it.

The ruling came in a case involving Supap Kirtsaeng, a student from Thailand who was surprised by the high cost of academic textbooks when he arrived in the U.S. to attend college. He asked his parents to search bookstores back home and send him much cheaper English language versions -- published overseas and sold at a fraction of the price -- of the same texts.

He was soon running what amounted to a small business out of his apartment, helping to pay his way through school by selling textbooks on eBay. The exact amount of his profit is unclear, but court records say it was around $100,000.

The publisher of some of the books he sold, John Wiley & Sons, sued him in federal court, and a New York jury ordered him in 2009 to pay $600,000 in damages. When he said he had nowhere near that kind of money, he had to hand over personal property, including his computer, printer and golf clubs. A federal appeals court upheld the verdict.

A law known as the the first-sale doctrine says if you buy the latest novel, you can then sell it on a website or give it away to the church library without violating copyright laws. A who's who of companies and groups involved in selling used merchandise had urged the Supreme Court to rule that the doctrine applied to goods made overseas.

The court ruled 6-3 that it does. The opinion, written by Justice Stephen Breyer, said that's what Congress intended and that's what the law has long been understood to mean.

"Reliance upon the 'first sale' doctrine is deeply embedded in the practices of those, such as booksellers, libraries, museums, and retailers, who have long relied upon its protection," Breyer wrote.

A contrary ruling, he said, "would prevent the resale of, say, a car, without the permission of the holder of each piece of copyrighted automobile software."

EBay warned that a ruling in favor of the publisher would have been a blow to "trade, consumers, secondary markets, e-commerce, small businesses and jobs." Goodwill Industries said such an outcome would have had "a catastrophic effect on the viability of the secondary market and, consequently, on Goodwill's ability to provide needed community-based services."

"There are enough copyright owners out there -- and enough crazy copyright lawsuits," said a group of book store operators in a friend of court brief. "No one should be put to the choice of violating the law and hoping they don't get caught, and losing their business."

Totally agree that once a product is bought and paid for, the consumer has every right to do with it what he or she wants to do, including selling it. Had this gone through, it would have had a profound impact on what I could and couldn't sell on eBay right now. A little off topic here, but the Video Game industry has been in an uproar over "lost" sales when their games are resold at a drastic price reduction. Is it no wonder that the majority of people, myself included prefer to buy used games for more than half the cost of a new one? Maybe if they would drop the ridiculous price point of $60 per game down to say $30-40, gamers would be more than willing to pay at that price. But what do they do? They try to strong arm retailers that sell used copies with legal action. In the end, within 2 years time, all the games will be 'Downloads' only, taking away our rights to sell off games once we are done with them. On top of that, the rumor is that these games will also be $70 and higher once the new consoles street. So, we now have to pay a higher price for an item that we are literally "stuck" with for life. There will be no way to recoup some, if not all of what we paid for, which absolutely blows and screams of price gouging.

Grab a paper bag, breathe into it and calm your ass down. You're hyperventilating because you ain't never seen a deal like this before. Now collect yourself, then keep reading this incredible description that barely serves to do justice to my 2010 Felt Gridlock 3 speed fixed gear bike. Yes 3 SPEED FIXED GEAR. Also known as the greatest bike the city has ever had the privilege of existing around.

What makes this bike so much better than every other bike that has ever been pedaled? Glad you asked. It starts with the paint scheme. It looks like Iron Man if Iron Man were a bike. That's bold, son. Curb appeal. It's probably also why some piece of trash stole the front tire that originally came with this beauty. Why didn't he steal the whole bike? Because he knew he wasn't man enough. That's ok, I replaced it with something that looks even more boss. The next thing is the genuine leather seat. My taint has had a love/hate relationship with this particular bit of the machine. But it's got those swanky brass rivets so I can't stay mad that it smashed my prostate and has likely rendered fatherhood impossible. But let's face it, I'd rather have have a bike than a kid.

What else? Let's talk about that three speed in-the-hub, fixed-gear transmission for a second. It's as gnarly as it is exotic. Like the tropical, saw-toothed platypus. Which is a species that does't even exist. Fortunately this crazy ass hub does. It offers 3 speeds, as the name implies. It also offers a terrific chance to introduce that dome of yours to the asphalt if you sleep for one single second on this beotch. So don't trip. Ride safe. Get a helmet and if you've never ridden a fixed gear bike, maybe it's time to move along, young sir because this back tire doesn't flip flop and it doesn't offer any respite. What this bike does offer is a one-way ticket to legits-ville. Find a bowling ball. Then find another one. Your nuts must be at least that big to even consider making this whip the dreamiest object to ever take up too much space in your tiny ass apartment. But you'll be filled with joy once you throw a leg over this flawless piece of American-made* cycling excellence.

What else? Ryan, the paint's a little dinged up. Yeah, well, that's called real life. It comes at you fast, bro. Besides, you really want this glimmering, shimmering sex machine catching the eye of some small time thief? I already told you what happened to the tire. You really don't want to be living your own version of PeeWee's big adventure. Consider the lived-in feel a natural crime deterrent. If this bike were denim jeans, it'd be called "de-stressed" and you'd be paying extra for the privilege. I'm not gonna charge you extra for it, though. Cause I'm not trying to take advantage of you. But you should take advantage of this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

But, aren't you sad about selling the greatest bike on earth? No. When you ride this bike once it permanently eliminates your ability to feel sad about anything ever again. Even for little puppies who are afraid to walk down the stairs, because the stairs...they're so big, and they're so little. Puppies who are young, but have already discovered the world to be a cold, unforgiving place. But you won't give a **** about it because you'll be on your awesome new bike living the dream.

Ryan, is that a toilet in the background? Yes. Why? Because this bike is the sheeyit. And you've just learned something else about me. That's right, my name is Ryan. And your name is lucky motherfather if you make the best choice of your life and pay me cold, hard cash for this ridiculous ride.

*Felt bikes are imported from Taiwan. Sorry to burst your bubble, homie, but globalization has been restructuring the way products get manufactured and sold since the 80's. Some believe it's eroding the American middle class. If you're the last to know, sorry for party rocking. Read "The World Is Flat." Form an opinion. Joint the dialog. By the way, the book is like 12 years old so this shouldn't be news. It's messed up, but we didn't start the fire. No we didn't light it, but we tried to fight it. Now buy this bitchin' ass bike.

Michelle Obama Has No Patience for Hecklers

Quote
Two weeks ago, President Obama was heckled by anti-war protester Medea Benjamin during a speech about drones and national security. The president handled it respectfully enough, acknowledging Benjamin and saying her “voice...is worth paying attention to.” Tuesday evening, Michelle Obama faced a similar situation when her speech during a Democratic Party fundraiser was interrupted by activist Ellen Sturtz from LGBT rights group GetEqual. The First Lady's response was...not quite as graceful as her husband's two weeks ago.

The Washington Post reports Obama paused her speech and confronted Sturtz “eye to eye”:

“One of the things that I don’t do well is this,” she said to applause from most of the guests, according to a White House transcript. “Do you understand?”

A pool report from a reporter in the room said Obama “left the lectern and moved over to the protester.” The pool report quoted Obama as saying: “Listen to me or you can take the mic, but I’m leaving. You all decide. You have one choice.”

The crowd immediately began to shout that they wanted the First Lady to stay, and a woman seated near Sturtz told her, “You need to go!”

Sturtz was escorted out, reportedly shouting that she was a “…lesbian looking for federal equality before I die.”

In an interview after the speech, Sturtz told the Washington Post she was caught off guard by the Obama's response.

“She came right down in my face,” Sturtz said. “I was taken aback.”

Sturtz's protest called for President Obama to sign an executive order that would prohibit contractors from discriminating based on sexual orientation or idenity. “I said I want your husband to sign the executive order,” Sturtz said. “Her husband could sign this order tonight and protect 22 percent of the work force in this country.”

Dave Matthews breaks down on bicycle, gets a ride to his concert from fan

Quote
A woman on her way to see the Dave Matthews Band perform in Hershey, Pa., on Saturday stopped her car to help a stranded bicyclist — and in the process saved the very rock show she was going to see.

Emily Kraus and her boyfriend, Joe, were already running late when they noticed a man on the side of the road. When they pulled over to help, it was none other than Dave Matthews.

The singer was out for a pre-concert bike ride when he got a flat tire, and he didn't have a cell phone to call for help. Kraus happened to have a bike rack on her car, and she told local TV station CBS 21 that Joe helped Matthews load his bike while she held his helmet.

Matthews then got in the car and rode with the couple to the concert. The three made small talk about his tour, and Kraus told CBS 21 that the rocker was very humble. He later invited Emily and Joe to dinner, had them visit backstage and gave them front-row seats for his show.

During the concert, Matthews made mention of the whole ordeal and the "nice lady named Emily" in the red car who gave him a ride to the gig.

In reply to a photo posted on CBS 21's Facebook page, Kraus said she has been listening to the Dave Matthews Band since she was 9 years old. "All the planets aligned last night — something greater then I'll ever be able to comprehend," she wrote, adding later, "My cheeks still hurt from smiling, giggling and laughing all night long ... this will always be remembered."

What a colossal waste of time and money from Bloomberg

Court upholds ruling striking down NYC's ban on large sugary drinks

Quote
A New York appeals court has upheld a ruling striking down New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg's latest health push: his controversial ban on large sugary drinks.

The ban, which would have prohibited the sale of sodas and other sugary beverages larger than 16 ounces by restaurants and city eateries, was an illegal overreach of executive power, the state appeals court ruled Tuesday, upholding a lower court decision in March that struck down the law.

The law "violated the state principle of separation of powers," the First Department of the state Supreme Court's Appellate Division said in a unanimous decision.

A state supreme court justice in Manhattan had ruled the new regulation was "arbitrary and capricious" in March a day before the regulation was due to take effect, ruling it invalid after the American Beverage Association and other business groups sued New York City, challenging the ban.

'Grown men began to weep': Wounded soldier awakens in hospital to make 'salute seen around the world'

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Var22QpX9U8

Quote
A salute by an Army Ranger — hospitalized with serious wounds after a suicide bomb attack in Afghanistan — is warming the hearts of many people after being posted online.

Cpl. Josh Hargis’ commander was at a military hospital awarding the seemingly unconscious soldier a Purple Heart for his injuries, pinning the medal to the blanket covering him.

And that's when Hargis surprisingly raised his arm to salute — struggling with his doctors and medical tubes to do so.

The commander sent a picture along with a letter about the incident to Hargis’ wife, Taylor, writing that "grown men began to weep" at the sight of the salute.

The commander added that it was “the single greatest event I have witnessed in my ten years in the Army.”

Hargis was wounded Oct. 6 when an Afghan woman detonated a suicide bomb vest, killing four members of his 3rd Army Ranger Battalion and wounding 12 other American soldiers, according to a report on the website of the soldier's hometown newspaper in Ohio, the Cincinnati Enquirer.

Taylor Hargis posted the picture along with the note on Facebook Oct. 12, where it has been shared more than 4,000 times. The story and picture were also distributed on the Guardian of Valor website, which called the picture the "the salute seen around the world."

The letter from the commander, according to Taylor Hargis' Facebook post, read in part:

"Josh, whom everybody in the room (over 50 people) assumed to be unconscious, began to move his right arm under the blanket in a diligent effort to salute the Commander as is customary during these ceremonies. Despite his wounds, wrappings, tubes, and pain, Josh fought the doctor who was trying to restrain his right arm and rendered the most beautiful salute any person in that room had ever seen. I cannot impart on you the level of emotion that poured through the intensive care unit that day.

It was assumed that Army Ranger Josh Hargis was unconscious during his Purple Heart ceremony in the hospital, but then he raised his arm in salute. NBC's Brian Williams reports.

"Grown men began to weep and we were speechless at a gesture that speak volumes about Josh's courage and character. The picture, which we believe belongs on every news channel and every newspaper, is attached. I have it hanging above my desk now and will remember it as the single greatest event I have witnessed in my ten years in the Army."

Hargis, 24, is a 2007 graduate of of Dater High School on the city’s west side and attended the University of Cincinnati, NBC affiliate WLWT in Cincinnati reported. He has since been moved from Afghanistan to Germany and onto San Antonio, Texas, the station said.

A reporter for another local station, WCPO, spoke to Hargis’ mother Laura Heitman, who said that Taylor and Josh Hargis are expecting their first child. Heitman also said she had recently talked to her son.

Her son, she said, “sounded amazing when I talked to him. He was in good spirits.”

Terri Wessel, who said she had taught Hargis in high school, told WCPO that the picture brought tears to her eyes.

“Seeing the picture of him saluting was the first I knew of him being injured,” Wessel told the station.”I teared up when I saw the picture but smiled at the same time as that picture summed up the type of man that Josh is. True American hero in my mind.”

This is really a fail (for Starbucks), but a win for the Brewery with it's sarcasm

Brewery to Starbucks: Here's $6

ST. LOUIS — A small Missouri brewery has responded to a cease and desist letter from Starbucks by sending the coffee chain giant a check to cover what it calls the profit from use of the word "Frappicino" — a check for $6.
Starbucks asked a brewery to stop using the name "Frappicino," spelled similarly to its blended beverages.

Starbucks asked a brewery to stop using the name "Frappicino," spelled similarly to its blended beverages.

Exit 6 Pub and Brewery in the St. Louis suburb of Cottleville named one of its brews the Frappicino, spelled just slightly differently than the name that Starbucks uses for its blended beverages. That prompted an attorney for Starbucks Coffee Co. to send Exit 6 a letter Dec. 9.

The letter from attorney Anessa Owen Kramer noted that the Seattle-based company "is the owner of a number of world-famous trademarks, including the well-known FRAPPUCCINO trademark." It said that the words are "phonetically identical" and that Exit 6's use of Frappicino "is likely to cause confusion, mistake."

In his sarcastic response letter, Exit 6 owner Jeff Britton also wrote that the brewery "never thought that our beer drinking customers would have thought that the alcoholic beverage coming out of the tap would have actually been coffee from one of the many, many, many stores located a few blocks away."

Exit 6 posted the letter on its Facebook site and responded with a letter to Kramer and "Mr. Bucks." The letter said Exit 6 would no longer use the term "Frappicino" and would instead refer to its beer as the "F Word."

Britton said in a telephone interview Tuesday that he brewed up a new batch of "The F Word" last Friday. By then, the dispute was already drawing attention on social media, and the beer sold out in three hours. He's contemplating making more, based on the calls, emails and Facebook messages of support he said he's received from around the world.

"It's been unbelievable," Britton said. "People are just saying, 'Hey, read the story, good job.' I'm getting emails and Facebook messages from Germany, China, England. People are just clamoring for it."

Starbucks spokeswoman Laurel Harper said the company was glad the brewery agreed to stop using the name.

"This was a respectful request asking Exit 6 to refrain from using the term 'Frappicino,' which differs by only one letter from our 'Frappuccino' product," she said by telephone. (Technically, it differs by two.)

"We always prefer to resolve trademark disputes informally and amicably, and we appreciate them respecting our request to avoid confusion among customers."

I'll make the assumption, George Clooney did get on Reddit. Nonetheless, just fun banter that makes this a win.

Quote
George Clooney came down off a wire on the set of the film "Tomorrowland" for an Ask Me Anything chat on Reddit on Tuesday. He introduced himself as "a filmmaker who's worked on films you may know" who was "also a guest star on 'The Golden Girls.'"

A post on the Facebook page for the film "Monuments Men" was used as proof for Redditors who may have wondered whether it was really Clooney they were lobbing questions at. And then the fun began, with talk of everything from making shoes to making movies to making the perfect sandwich. We've rounded up some of the best back and forth.

Q. What is a hobby of yours that most people don't know about?

"I'm a cobbler, I like to make shoes."

Q. Who's a better cobbler, you or Daniel Day-Lewis?

"Let me just tell you this. When Daniel Day-Lewis was spending all his time playing Lincoln, I was just fixing shoes. He's spending all the time focused on the hat, and the pipe, and getting into character, and I remained focused - with the overalls and the hammer."

Q. Have you hung out with Leonardo DiCaprio? I heard a story about how you kicked his ass at basketball.

"It's true. That was a fun day. It's always fun when you play people younger than you and win. We're playing a bunch of six year olds tomorrow."

Q. Hey Mr. Clooney, glad to see you here. What was your reaction to being offered the role of Stan's dog in South Park? Did you accept right away or did you take some time to think about it?

"Sparky the gay dog? It was sort of a surprise for me, I mean, here’s something odd, I had never played a dog before. To finally play Sparky the dog was something that I think pretty much completed my career."

Q.Why do you have such lonely eyes?

"I actually have only one lonely eye. The other eye’s got nothin’ but friends."

Q. What was it like filming Up In the Air? Amazing movie by the way. Also, in general, how do celebrities feel when they get poked fun of at certain award ceremonies?

"Usually it’s pretty funny. You know I got really good by Tina and Amy the other day and I’m working on getting them back in a big way. But for the most part most of the time when it’s bad it’s actually funny. ... Shows like that are designed to have fun with you without being devastatingly unkind. I’ve been the target of a couple of stupid jokes that didn’t work, but in general I’ve only seen a couple that were really vicious toward people, and they didn't work. When they don’t work you feel badly for the person doing it."

Q. Hey George, Welcome to Reddit! I loved the movie Gravity. You and Sandra have great chemistry together. Were there any funny moments that happened during shooting?

"It’s tricky cause Sandy drinks so much that oftentimes it’s just hard to keep her upright. No, you know, Sandy and I have known each other for over 20 years ... Every time we’re together it’s funny. ... I’m sure people will assume people aren’t quite who they appear to be on screen — they’re shorter or taller or meaner or dumber — but Sandy is exactly what she appears on screen, an incredibly charming woman who’s really just fun to hang out with. Very smart and centered, even though she does drink a lot."

Q. I'm feeling hungry Mr. Clooney. What, in your eyes, is the perfect sandwich?

"Oh the perfect sandwich. Well, good question. The perfect sandwich would be... I want to come up with two gorgeous actresses but I won't do that. Name your two. I don't know you know I'd have to think about it. I do like ham and avocado and a little tomato and a little mustard. Just a simple deli sandwich is great. You know, put some coleslaw in there."

Q. What's the one movie role you're most embarrassed / ashamed about, that you don't mind sharing? Surely the coolest man on earth has something to share?

"Well I wasn’t thrilled with the nipples on the batsuit. You know that’s not something you really think about when you’re putting it on. You figure all batsuits have nipples and then you realize yours was really the first. Batman was just constantly cold I guess. But I have plenty of other things that I’m really obviously embarrassed about too. ..."

Q. Would you rather fight one horse sized duck or 100 duck sized horses?

"Can’t I do both? No, I want the duck-sized horses, I could take them. The saddles on them are so cute."

Watch Billy Joel’s ‘Authentic Rock and Roll F— Up’ – and Absolutely Perfect Response
by Matthew Wilkening 1 minute ago

We never did like the wise-asses who cheered derisively when a kid dropped his lunch tray in the cafeteria. So instead of focusing on how Billy Joel briefly messed up the tongue-twisting lyrics to his 1989 hit ‘We Didn’t Start the Fire’ in concert earlier this week, can we instead talk about how wonderfully he reacted?

As you can see above, about 30 seconds into performing the song in Toronto on March 9, Joel loses his place, quickly stops his band and addresses the crowd. First off, it’s good to know that there are no backing tracks that needed to be shut off along with the drums, keyboards and guitars. And it’s also refreshing to see that, unlike many performers of his era these days, Joel doesn’t use a TelePrompter in case moments like these arise.

But more importantly, Joel handled the moment with humor and self-deprecation, calling ‘Fire’ “One of the worst melodies I ever wrote,” and explaining why it’s so easy to get lost singing it: “It’s the same thing, verse after verse. Just the words change.” Then, after briefly considering skipping the song altogether, he starts it over and everybody goes home happy. And let’s also give full credit to his band, who kick back into the song without missing a step.

Score one for Billy. That was pretty cool to see. Love it when someone as big as him can make fun of the situation for what it is. Now picture Axl Rose in the same situation and you have a meltdown followed by a full scale riot.

More Billy Joel winning news...

I'll bet this was awesome (despite this video's awful look and sound)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9JLJJj-4Xv8

Quote
When Billy Joel announced his monthly residency at Madison Square Garden last year, he promised unique and special setlists. But nobody could have predicted what happened at his show last night (March 21), when he invited Brian Johnson of AC/DC onstage to sing ‘You Shook Me All Night Long.’

Johnson came on two-thirds of the way through Joel’s main set, immediately after Joel’s ballad ’She’s Always a Woman.’ That may have seemed like an incongruous segue, but the crowd nonetheless leapt to its feet and sang along. And considering AC/DC haven’t worked since the ‘Black Ice’ tour ended in 2010, Johnson’s voice was in great shape.

The rest of the setlist follows the template of other recent Billy Joel shows, where he’s mixing in deep cuts — including ‘Surprises,’ ‘I’ve Loved These Days’ and ‘Where’s the Orchestra’ — among his greatest hits. In addition to ‘You Shook Me All Night Long,” Joel also covered the Beatles’ ’A Hard Day’s Night’ and The Lion Sleeps Tonight,’ inspired, presumedly, by his performance of it the day before on ’The Tonight Show’ with Jimmy Fallon and an iPad.

Last month, Johnson disclosed to a Florida radio station that AC/DC were going to enter the studio in May for a new album. They are also planning a 40-date tour in honor of their 40th anniversary.

One Awesome Dad Is Using His Animation Skills To Turn Videos Of His Toddler Son Into Action Films

Quote
Most parents’ videos of their kids are crazy boring. Ooh, let me guess, she used a word wrong and then got food all over her face,? I’ll alert the media. But recently, Daniel Hashimoto, who is a Dreamworks animator as well as a father, has been putting his animation skills to good use, using them to spice up his home movies so that videos of his 3-year-old son, James won’t be the usual boring-as-hell drool ****.

Eating at the breakfast table gets a plasma cannon. A toy light sabre becomes real. Jumping from couch to couch becomes an action sequence with a real lava swamp. It’s great stuff, and after seeing these, I’m hoping parents everywhere will be shamed into not sharing all their kid videos without at least doing a little effects work first.

This is also a lot easier to root for than the Will Smith version, where instead of turning your kid’s videos into an action movie, you just buy action movies for your kid. If James here ever starts spouting about becoming Buddha, we’ll know this has backfired.

I like the last one the best...

How old is Al.... Gawd he still looks as young as ever.

I've recently joined DrummerWorld forum and Weird Al's drummer Jon "Bermuda" Schwartz, is regular. Talks about everything, including the new success. Seems like a pretty cool guy.

Quote
Wiki: Mandatory Fun was released to strong critical praise and was the #1 debut album on the Billboard charts the week of its release, buoyed by Yankovic's approach for releasing eight music videos over eight continuous days that drew viral attention to the album as described below.[38] It became Yankovic's first #1 album in his career. Additionally, the song "Word Crimes" (a parody of Robin Thicke's "Blurred Lines") reached #39 on the Top 100 singles for the same week; this is Yankovic's fourth Top 40 single, and makes him only the third artist, after Michael Jackson and Madonna, to have a Top 40 single in each decade since the 1980s.

Gene Simmons Tells Immigrants to Learn English

Quote
As a person who came to the United States as a young boy and grew up to be a wealthy and famous American citizen, Gene Simmons knows a thing or two about tips for immigrants, and he wasn’t shy about offering one of those keys for success during a recent interview with the Huffington Post.

Sitting down with HuffPo Live (ostensibly to promote the Kiss-driven new reality series ‘4th and Loud,’ inspired by the band’s investment in the L.A. Kiss football team), Simmons set aside a few moments to vent his frustration with what he views as a growing number of American immigrants whom he believes can’t be bothered to learn the English language.

“I’m actually saying the thing that needs to be said because the politically-correct climate is bulls—,” Simmons huffed. “You don’t want to upset anybody by saying, ‘Learn to speak goddamn English.’ So, as an immigrant, I’m telling you: learn to speak goddamn English. It is the key that will unlock the keys to the kingdom.”

Indelicate phrasing aside, it’s hard to argue with the common sense behind Simmons’ advice; getting around or ahead in the U.S. is tough without a basic understanding of English. And according to the latest census data, it’s also true that the number of people who describe themselves as having a low proficiency with the language is increasing (although the number of American households described as “linguistically isolated” still only amounts to a relatively minor five percent).

It’s also true, however, that funding for public programs that teach English lags behind demand, and it would be interesting to get Simmons’ perspective on the issue as a self-described fiscal conservative who’s called for reducing government spending.
Title: Re: Glorious Wins...
Post by: Chiprocks1 on August 12, 2014, 12:12:35 pm
I think it's a no-brainer that if you come to America, you should be REQUIRED to speak English. If you don't, then get the f*ck out! If I moved to another country, wouldn't they expect me to learn their language if I intend to engage in their culture? Exactly.

The sad part is it was hackers.... why couldn't our defense industry do this... long ago.

'Isil is a virus, we are the cure': Hackers say they’ve taken down 100 Isil Twitter accounts

Hacktivist group Anonymous has delivered a blow to Islamic State by disabling dozens of Twitter accounts it believes are used to recruit fighters.

In an online post titled '#OpISIS' the group lists the Twitter handles of 90 users it has ‘taken offline’ and claims these they are just some of the accounts removed by its team.

The group also lists the full URLs of 12 Facebook users it says are suspected to have been in contact with terrorists in Syria and Iraq, to “keep an eye on”.

Most of the accounts listed are currently suspended or unavailable.

In their online statement Anonymous also issued a warning to Isil, detailing plans to systematically erase and expose their extremist affiliates:

Quote
“We will hunt you, Take down your sites, Accounts, Emails, and expose you... From now on, no safe place for you online... You will be treated like a virus, And we are the cure...”

The comments were posted on Pastebin - a website used by Anonymous and other hackers to post about their hacks.

The statement also linked to a YouTube video, explaining more about the online attack (watch at the top of the article).

Anonymous reminded Isil that members of their collective hail from from religions and countries all over the world.

"We are Muslims, we are Christians, we are Jews, we are hackers... We come from all races, countries, religions, and ethnicity.

"We are hackers, crackers, hacktivists, phishers, agents, spies, or just the guy from next door. We are students, administrators, workers, clerks, unemployed, rich, poor.

"We are young, or old, gay or straight. We wear smart clothes or Uggs. We come from all races, countries, religions, and ethnicity. United as one, divided by zero. We are Anonymous".

They signed off with the promise that there is “More to come soon”.

Anonymous have carried out a number of high-profile cyber attacks in recent months.

They targeted Israeli government websites and briefly brought down the homepage of a Jerusalem-based bank in retaliation for Israeli attacks on Gaza.

The collective took over the official Ku Klux Klan Twitter account and threatened to leak the details of those behind it.

In the wake of the Charlie Hebdo attack the hacktivists vowed to avenge the cartoonists' deaths by shutting down jihadist websites.

Nut rage fallout: Court sentences Korean Air executive to one year in prison

Quote
A Seoul court on Thursday sentenced a former Korean Air executive to a year in prison for aviation law violations that stemmed from her inflight tantrum over how she was served macadamia nuts.

Cho Hyun-ah, the daughter of Korean Air's chairman, achieved worldwide notoriety after she ordered the chief flight attendant off a December 5 flight, forcing it to return to the gate at John F Kennedy Airport in New York.

Head of cabin service at the time of the incident, Cho was angered she had been offered macadamia nuts in a bag instead of on a dish. A heated and physical confrontation with members of the crew in first class ensued.

The court said Cho was guilty of forcing a flight to change its route, obstructing the flight's captain in the performance of his duties and forcing a crew member off a plane. It found her not guilty of interfering with a transport ministry investigation into the incident. Prosecutors had called for three years in prison.

Cho, in custody since December 30, wiped away tears with a tissue as a letter expressing her remorse was read to the court by head judge Oh Seong-woo.

It included details about how Cho, one of the richest women in South Korea who regularly flew first class, was adjusting to the basic conditions in prison and reflecting on her life. "I know my faults and I'm very sorry," Cho said in her letter.

Cho's high-and-mighty behavior, dubbed nut rage, caused an uproar in South Korea. The incident was a lightning rod for anger in a country where the economy is dominated by family-run conglomerates known as chaebol that often act above the law. The sentencing did not entirely douse that outrage: One year in prison is a "bit short," said Jo Young-sang, 24.

Chaebol chiefs convicted of white collar crimes have typically received suspended prison sentences and later on, presidential pardons. Courts have often acknowledged the contribution of such industrialists in transforming South Korea from an economic backwater into a developed economy.

But the Cho case indicates South Korean society is less indulgent of the second and third generation members of high-profile business families. Heirs to fantastic fortunes such as Cho quickly ascend the executive ladder but few believe their rise is based on merit.

"Most second or third generations of chaebol in South Korea think of themselves as members of royal families or in the special aristocratic class. So they think they can do whatever they want," said Yonsei University psychology professor Whang Sang-mi.

In her letter to the court, Cho said she was given only toilet paper, soap and underwear after being detained but was humbled that other prisoners had given her their toiletries.

"People there lent me their toner, lotion, shampoo and rinse. I was so thankful," the letter said. "They didn't ask me anything about this case. I felt that this was indeed being considerate for others."

Oh, the chief judge, said the court took into consideration that Cho's actions undermined the flight's safety, that the flight attendants who were verbally and physically abused are still struggling to return to work and worldwide media reports about the case damaged South Korea's reputation.

"If she were considerate to people, if she didn't treat employees like slaves, if she could have controlled her emotion," said Oh, "this case would not have happened."

But the court also recognized that Cho showed remorse and the airline was making efforts to help the affected flight attendants. Cho's attorney left the court without answering a question about whether she will appeal.

Some South Koreans felt the sentence was inadequate.

"To me, the nut rage incident looked like a rich kid in an elementary school looking down on poor or weak kids," said Chang Sabine, a teacher. "I think she should be doing community service to become mentally matured."

The court sentenced Yeo Woon-jin, a Korean Air executive who pressured employees to lie about the nut rage case, to eight months in prison.

Transport ministry official Kim Woon-sub was found guilty of leaking the ministry's investigation to the airline. He received a six month prison sentence suspended for one year.

What a remarkable turnaround for Rufus "Mr. Bumfight" Hannah! Wow! I actually had a conversation about this guy last week and up until then, I hadn't given much thought to whatever became of the guy since the moment he became "famous" or infamous if you will. So, it's kinda odd that I would get this feed about his whereabouts now.

Even before I got half way through his story, my initial perception was that this guy was a little slow on the uptake and that he was being used only for his money. Turns out I was right. I for one applaud that he cut them all off. I don't respond well to gold diggers or whatever you want to call them. Sponges? "Real Dad"? Are you f*cking kidding me? I hope she has the worst wedding ever. Personally, given the context of the message, I would have put Daughter and GF in the Douche Thread because that's what they are for treating "Fake Dad" in the manner that they do. Hope he finds a GF that appreciates him for who he is rather than the size of his ATM account. Rant over.

Bids in George Zimmerman gun auction up to $65M

Quote
Bidding in an online auction for the gun George Zimmerman used to kill Trayvon Martin was up to $65 million Friday morning as Internet trolls appeared to drive the offers to astronomic levels.

Bidding on the 9 mm Kel-Tec PF-9 pistol began at $5,000 and reached more than $65 million early Friday. The top bidder at one point used the screen name “Racist McShootface.” That account was later deleted. Another bidder used the name Tamir Rice, which is the name of a 12-year-old boy shot by police in Cleveland while carrying a toy gun.

The most recent bid topping $65 million is by someone identified as Craig Bryant.

The United Gun Group website began hosting the auction after another website, GunBroker.com, halted bidding. But United Gun Group briefly pulled the listing Thursday night, saying the auction was not in the organization's best interest.

“Our mission is to esteem the 2nd amendment and provide a safe and secure platform for firearms enthusiasts and law-abiding citizens; our association with Mr. Zimmerman does not help us achieve that objective," the organization wrote.

However, the auction was back up and running on the company’s website early Friday and the bid clock says it will be open for four more days.

GunBroker.com stopped the auction on its site Thursday and said Zimmerman never contacted anyone at the firm about the listing.

A video on Digg made me want to search for similar videos on Youtube.  These are people seeing colour for the first time, it was just such a delight to watch... and of course, brings up certain emotions in myself, having had a moment of epiphany like that when I was younger.  Lemme tell you, those first few hours of sensory overload are euphoric, I remember being able to watch TV on volume level 5, I was hearing plastic bags rustling so loud they were like a hurricane, the electrical hum of every piece of tech in the house... it's insane.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_d0lyB9oLuo

I love how this guy just stops in his tracks the second he puts those things on.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gyg8y6-Rtxw

This kid is so adorable.  "It's dark bluuue!"  I also love how scientific he is, only putting the glasses on after establishing what he's going to be looking at.

The fact that everyone keeps bringing up grass and trees in all these videos just makes me think that moment in The Force Awakens was a bit underdone, but at the same time I can't imagine it would work for the movie if Rey was walking around the forest like a stoner, "what's this?  Have you seen this?  There's pink AND green, and the plants are different colours!?"
