Queensr˙che (The Warning) 1984

How I got into Queensr˙che is interesting unto itself. It was by chance really. I had already scored my tickets to see KISS on their Animalize (http://pennycan.createaforum.com/music/kiss-(the-replacement-lineup)-discography/msg2685/#msg2685) Tour and opening uo for them was Queensr˙che. I didn't have a  f u c k i n g  clue who they were, but the name sounded really cool. I had gotten the ticktes about 4 months before they were to arrive in town and in that time, I never even gave it a thought to find out more about this band. It was literally 5 minutes before I was heading down to the Sports Arena to see KISS in concert. As I was about to turn off MTV, on comes Take Hold Of The Flame. I immediately said to myself "that's them"? I wasn't saying it based on their look but on the fact that I had been rocking out to this mystery song on the radio whenever it came on. But they never said the band's name, so I didn't have a clue they were one and the same.

So, it was kinda cool that I was suddenly going to see them in concert and get to hear the song live. It was awesome. They tore it up and ended up putting on one of the best shows I've ever seen for an opening band. So, what about the album? I ended up picking up The Warning shortly after just for the song. Although I enjoy The Warning, it was never something I would listen to over and over and I think the reason why is because Queensr˙che was a very progressive metal band at the time. I thought both Geoff Tate and the band itself was amazing. I had never even heard anyone that could hit notes that high before and that's what a lot of The Warning is. So it was jarring to hear everything an octave higher and layered at the time.

The album is still great, but far from their best. That would present itself over the next few years. But the blueprint of what's to come can be found here. This is probably the first time I've listened to all of The Warning since maybe the late 80's, early 90's and a couple of songs just don't hold up as well as I remember it.

Fave Songs: Warning, NM 156, Before the Storm and Take Hold Of The Flame, which gets the MVP award.

these are from the show where the fight took place right before they went on stage...and the drummer basically said to Tate..."we fired your family and you are NEXT"

Geoff attacked him and then threw the guitarist to the ground.

I don't condone violence...but that warranted a good old fashion ass kicking...in a gentlemanly way of course

:)

Watch, they are going to get Ripper for a couple of Tours and decide to patch things up with Tate for the mega reunion tour. To get back on point, the only reason I can think of why the other members would want a 3rd party vendor taking over merchandising is that they knew these people and that they would be skimming the take and splitting the profits with everyone not named Tate. That's the only logical reason to do that. It makes no sense to give your money away for the sake of doing it.

Queensr˙che (Rage For Order) 1986
(http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i266/Chiprocks1/Star%20Ratings/HTL_10star.gif)

(http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i266/Chiprocks1/CD%20and%20Album%20Covers/Queensryche%20500x500/1986RageForOrder.jpg) (http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i266/Chiprocks1/CD%20and%20Album%20Covers/Queensryche%20500x500/1986RageForOrderBackVinyl.jpg)

There is no reason on Earth that anyone as young as these cats were when Rage For Order came out that it should be this good. Now when I say 'good', I mean so far advanced that it made everyoen else look ridiculous in the stuff they were putting out. The term "ahead of its time" gets thrown around a lot lately which loses it's meaning. In the case of Queensr˙che, they were a million miles ahead of everyone in songwriting, musicianship, vocal range and stage shows. It's been years since I have listened to this album front to back and I'm just blown away by the fact that something so advanced came out over 25 years ago. I was talking to friend of mine yesterday about Rage and he hit the nail on the head about how it blows away anything that is out now. He said "its aged like fine wine". I agree with what he was getting across, but I disagree about it aging like fine wine. To me Order was always a case of Chateau Lafite right out of the box.

If there is one negative I do have with this era of the band is that they suddenly went with the Glam look which was totally unnecessary. I get that they wanted a larger fan base and becoming part of the LA Scene at the time seemed to be the most logical way to get there. But unlike the bulk of bands they were lumped with, these guys have an album that stands the test of time. What's scary is that their best is yet to come.

Fave Songs: All of 'em. But in keeping with tradition I will pick my Top 3 songs from Rage: Walk In The Shadows, London and Neue Regel

from the interviews I've watched the last few days they were still teenagers when the band formed so like you said...they were probably all 20-22 years old when they did this which is really amazing...they had such an original vision!

Queensr˙che (Operation: Mindcrime) 1988
(http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i266/Chiprocks1/Star%20Ratings/HTL_10star.gif)

(http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i266/Chiprocks1/CD%20and%20Album%20Covers/Queensryche%20500x500/1988OperationMindcrime.jpg) (http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i266/Chiprocks1/CD%20and%20Album%20Covers/Queensryche%20500x500/1988OperationMindcrimeBack.jpg)

I'm really torn between which album I think is their true masterpiece: Rage For Order or Operation: Mindcrime. Now for years it has always been Mindcrime that was their crowning achievement. But having just gotten done listening to Mindcrime today and Order yesterday, it's literally neck and neck between the both of them. I think part of the reason why I'm on the fence is that the first two Queensr˙che albums have that definitive sound that is their trademark. But on Mindcrime it's a little more "traditional". By that I mean that the album, thus the sound of the band itself is a little more accessible to the average fan. Now I don't know if this was by design to get more radio airplay or just an outgrowth of their songwriting. There are some amazing, incredible songs on Mindcrime that belong up there with the best ever.

This is without question the greatest Concept album ever made. Sorry, but Tommy and The Elder (http://pennycan.createaforum.com/music/kiss-(the-replacement-lineup)-discography/msg2676/#msg2676) can go sit in the corner and weep and what they couldn't achieve with theirs. Right off the bat you have Revolution Calling which may be my 2nd favorite Queensr˙che song of all time. The song is addictive and an earworm. One listen and it gets stuck in your head for days....if not weeks.  I'm gonna spend the rest of the day listening to this one so that I can make a clear cut decision once and for all which is the best album. Damn it, I just remember I have Empire to listen to as well. Well, this is gonna be a bloody fight to the end for sure. Kinda like Geoff and the rest of the band.

Fave Songs: Revolution Calling, Eyes Of A Stranger, I Don't Believe In Love and Suite Sister Mary are tops in my book. But I love the entire album.

‘Violent’ Tate cut secret Mindcrime movie deal (http://www.classicrockmagazine.com/news/violent-geoff-tate-cut-secret-queensryche-movie-deal/)

Quote
In 2012, former singer Geoff Tate made a secret movie deal with Zoetifex Studios without informing the members of Queensryche for the rights to an animated Operation:Mindcrime movie which would pay him an advance and most of the royalties associated with the movie's merchandising but significantly cut out his bandmates and former guitarist Chris DeGarmo. Tate alleged that he alone owned the rights to the story although most of the band contributed music to the concept of Mindcrime

I went digging a little bit deeper to hear the other side of the story as to why Geoff was fired and what I found (if it's true) does kind of make me side with the other guys now. Punching and spitting, regardless of who it is, is something I would never tolerate personally. But if Geoff did in fact sign a movie deal cutting out everyone from the band based on the claim that "it's his idea and he wrote it all" is straight up a douche move on his part. No one person created Operation: Mindcrime. You guys worked on this together as a band, therefore the entire band deserves to share in the spoils. You can't arbitrarily decide to restructure the music rights just because you think you should do it.

well it's another slice of the pie...if relations were failing he was just doing what Axl did with G N R which was snag the name...if he felt Mindcrime was his INTELLECTUAL property.....than the music would really only be secondary.

The story would be animated and if he wrote it....in theory he main own that part of the concept/

see what I am getting at...the "story" not the guitar riffs etc.

There would be no story if there wasn't an Operation: Mindcrime.

you know what I am saying...if he wrote 100% of the story....then in theory and possibly legally he did nothing wrong....now based on HIS own words...they are all family and have been together for 30 years....so I am not sure why it wouldn't be a group effort going for something like this...because the music would make it quite a bit better.

I wonder if the idea was an Aeon Flux type thing like a series.

Queensr˙che: Operation Livecrime (1991) VHS
(http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i266/Chiprocks1/Star%20Ratings/HTL_05star.gif)

Queensr˙che is such an amazing group of performers and this line up right here was the pinnacle showcasing their unbelievable musicianship as well as the powerhouse vocals of Geoff Tate. It doesn't get any better than this if you're looking for a show from start to finish. The idea behind Queensr˙che: Operation Livecrime comes from their concept album Operation: Mindcrime, which to me is the benchmark for any and all concepts albums. The concert basically plays the entire album in its entirety.

Even though this is technically a live performance concert, the visual representation of the show is more like one long-form music video with the way it's put together with the edits to incorporate the performance, the audience and the video segments projected on two huge screens behind the band, which itself is telling the story of the characters that make up Operation: Mindcrime. All in all, it's a fantastic show. Unfortunately, it's only an hour long. Had the show ran 3 hours, I still would want more. I highly recommend this as a Buy for any and all Hard Rock / Metal fans.
