Title: Cool Opening/Closing Credits
Post by: Mac on March 30, 2012, 08:07:08 am
I had been thinking about this for awhile, and until last night, it was just thinking.

Post some of your favorite opening credits to movies. Or even some of the closing credits can be cool (I just kind of recall funny outtakes).

Anyway, I was blown away with the visuals to Opening of The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sY4f_83t_rw

also impressed with Zombieland
The way they integrate the text in the scene is cool too

Having just watched Shoot 'Em Up (http://pennycan.createaforum.com/dvd's-blu-rays/shoot-'em-up-(2007)/msg7247/#msg7247) a few days ago, the End Credits was actually still on my mind. Awesome stuff for sure.

It's a shame that no one has posted the End Credits for both Fast & Furious (http://pennycan.createaforum.com/dvd's-blu-rays/fast-furious-(2009)/msg7652/#msg7652) and Fast Five (http://pennycan.createaforum.com/dvd's-blu-rays/fast-five/msg7686/#msg7686) which have incredible sequences to close out the movies. Bah!! Lazy YouTube'rs(http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i266/Chiprocks1/Smilies/0%20All%20Smilies/banghead.gif)

The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo Opening Title Sequence

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sY4f_83t_rw

Sick, sick, sick! One of the best Title sequences I have ever seen. As great as it is, it really doesn't tie in with the rest of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (http://pennycan.createaforum.com/dvd's-blu-rays/the-girl-with-the-dragon-tattoo-(2011)/msg12019/#msg12019). Still pretty damn cool though. Reminds me of Tool or NIN.

UPDATE:

Just noticed that Mac posted this in the first post. Damn you Mac! Damn You!!!!!!!

The motion tracked Zombieland titles reminds me of the opening for Watchmen for some reason.  That was an opening that blew me away when I saw it.

I posted this link in the Girl With The Dragon Tattoo thread, it's a retrospective of David Fincher's opening sequences (http://www.artofthetitle.com/feature/david-fincher-a-film-title-retrospective/)  I quite like his idea of the opening being a prologue and data dump, setting up everything you need to know without wasting the audience's time.

And while it doesn't accomplish that task, IMO, the opening for Casino Royale with the cards... I dug that.  And I dug the music too, felt like a fresh injection of life into a musty old franchise (that I honestly wasn't that connected to).

It's been more than a few years since I saw "Ultraviolet" but I remember thinking "if they remade Mallrats, THAT"S how they opening should be done."  Although I still have a problem with the stuck-in-the-6os superhero four-colour motif that comics are stuck in when they're shown on screen.  MEANWHILE... the opening for Sin City, with the comic panels with the actors' names, I like the idea but it was just not visually interesting.   I know Rob-Rod's a fast worker but there could be so many interesting things to do the second time around, maybe a take-off of Hitchcock/Saul Bass pastiche.  The trick would be making it look different from the rest of the movie.

Almost every Opening Credits relating to the Bond Films could qualify for this thread. Just sayin'.

The Spy Who Loved Me

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wy-c8aAntWA

Having just watched The Spy Who Loved Me (http://pennycan.createaforum.com/dvd's-blu-rays/the-spy-who-loved-me-(1977)/msg14368/#msg14368), it's time to add one of the best and certainly one of my all time favorite Credit Scenes from a Bond film. I will most likely add each credit scene after going through my James Bond Marathon currently in effect.

Spider-Man 3 (Opening Credits)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GQyl0R-H1uY

I meant to post these a couple of days ago. Better late than never. I like all 3 openings, particularly that of 2 & 3 because it's basically used as a "recap" in an ingenious way instead of what a typical serialize TV show uses with their "Previously on....." Of the 3, I absolutely love 2 because it uses artwork from the amazing Alex Ross, who is a god among gods in the art world.

Moonraker

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7T4v9bFFIpk

Although the song is kinda weak compared to some of the better, classic Bond songs, I do still enjoy the Opening Credits for Moonraker. It's nowhere near that of The Spy Who Loved Me though, that's for sure.

For Your Eyes Only (Opening Credits)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Id08vsWjT2c

As I point out in my review for For Your Eyes Only (http://pennycan.createaforum.com/dvd's-blu-rays/for-your-eyes-only-(1981)/msg14949/#msg14949), this is the best part of the entire movie for me. One interesting fact that immediately caught my attention when I saw this in the theater was having the one singing the theme song appear in the Opening Credits. To my knowledge, this was the only time that's ever happened. Bravo Sheena Easton, you have made history.

Huh, don't recall that song. I believe you're correct about the singer in the credits.

The Living Daylights (Opening Credits)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=51hP04kOE7Y

Licence To Kill (Opening Credits)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ju_by-sC79c

No, I don't think these two Opening Credits are cool. The Living Daylights is actually pretty bad, add a sh*tty song to the mix and it fails, big time. The License To Kill Opening is slightly better and has a decent song, but it's far from what their best have been in the past. So, why am I posting these? Head to the next post and see, b*tches!

GoldenEye (Opening Credits)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qGPBFvDz_HM

When I saw the GoldenEye opening, I was blown away by its awesomeness. They went back to the source material of some of the best sequences in Bond history. There is absolutely no flaw to be found in this. Plus, I love the song by Tina Turner. If there is one criticism of this sequence, its the PC nature of it. Gone are naked chicks for the most part and in are clothes. Grrrr!! Other than that, I can watch this over and over........

Tomorrow Never Dies (Opening Title)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SDe1xi4tGUA

I love the song and the X-Ray look to the Opening Credits for sure. It does enough to distinguish itself as something new and fresh while paying tribute to the past.

The World Is Not Enough (Opening Title)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LzvNDR5OrqM

Die Another Day (Opening Title)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gb8_1MEdcYY

For The World Is Not Enough, the Opening Credits was about the only good thing about the movie. Song was decent. As for Die Another Day, I totally dig the new look and I like how that actually incorporate some of the films narrative into the Opening. The song itself for me was just an 'okay' Madonna song, but as a Bond song, I don't think it works.

C a s i n o   Royale (Opening Credits)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sYbQpmvOIxk

Love, love, looooooooove the new look to the Opening Credits. It's f*cking awesome! It should actually be headlining this thread. What could possibly make this better? Oh, I dunno. Perhaps a kick ass song by Chris Cornell.

Despite Resident Evil: Retribution (#5) really falling down in the series, I do remember the opening credits... because of the slow mo reverse perspective. Of course after the credits roll, they do show the scene forward in real time and it takes all of a 20-30 seconds.

Although I like the song by itself and the art direction for this particular sequence was cool, it is nowhere as epic as the one seen in Royale.

A View To A Kill (Opening Credits)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hWVbVT3igdw

The sequence really doesn't belong in a thread called Cool Opening/Closing Credits at all. But I wanted to wrap up my Bond Marathon and point out how a horrible design element here, coupled with a sh*tty song can effectively derail a movie before it even begins. Worst. Bond. Opening. Credits. Ever.

Here's a cool little pseudo-documentary on Opening Credits...

THE FILM before THE FILM

Quote
We've previously highlighted the occasional spectacle that is a film's credit sequence by calling attention to The Art of the Title Sequence, dedicated to stylish opening and ending credits sequences that bookend the films we all now and love. In addition, we've taken a dive into one of the more iconic credits sequence artists, Saul Bass, and his legacy of work on films from Alfred Hitchcock and more. Now another interesting video called The Film Before the Film, which is the result of a research project from Berlin Technical Art University students Nora Thoes and Damian Pérez, dives into the history of opening credits. Watch below!

http://vimeo.com/60964497

Quote
The 12-minute video gives time to Saul Bass while also looking at the trends in credits sequences from digitally designed titles, to throwbacks to the old titles of decades past. There's also highlights from many of the famous credit sequences we know today from classics like King Kong to popular films of today like The Avengers. Honestly, I always enjoy a good opening and/or closing credits sequence from the most complex and meticulously designed sequences like Catch Me If You Can to The Usual Suspects, which is subtle and simple.

It's a little NSFW so I don't think I should put the video on here but there's an amazing double-exposure opening on Vimeo (https://vimeo.com/66487989)... pretty astounding.  And BTW, I'm a  big fan of the little text in the credits.

Title: Re: Cool Opening/Closing Credits

I'm pretty sure it was in front of a program or something (I'm sure there's quite a few of these in front of film festival programs or something like that).

Here's one that's not TECHNICALLY an opening sequence, but feels like one and I would TOTALY love to see a movie do something like this.

Without question, Weeds is the most creative and original when it comes to Opening Credits for a TV Series. I couldn't put them all in this thread and I was kind hoping someone had compiled them all into one video. But when it came to the theme song starting with Season 2, they had a different singer/band/artist singing it. The music styles ranged from blues to metal to hard rock to gospel and everything else in between you can think of.
