CBS Orders Drama Pilots from Chris Columbus, Nicholas Pileggi and Ilene Chaiken (http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/live-feed/cbs-drama-pilots-chris-columbus-nicholas-pileggi-ilene-chaiken-285213)

Can this sustain itself? Period pieces have not done well lately. Speaking of The Playboy Club and Pan Am. I love Vegas and I love period pieces so I will give this one a shot.

Vic Mackey just traveled back in time to Vegas, and I am A-Ok with that. I like the cast of Michael Chiklis, Dennis Quaid and Carrie-Ann Moss.

Pilot
(http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i266/Chiprocks1/Star%20Ratings/HTL_03halfstar.gif)

I had really high hopes for Vegas. After watching the Pilot, I'm a bit underwhelmed by it. It's not that it was bad, it's just that it didn't give me what I was expecting from it. I wanted something more along the lines of  C a s i n o  (http://pennycan.createaforum.com/dvd's-blu-rays/c-a-s-i-n-o-(1995)/msg10081/#msg10081). Half the episode was basically a procedural show with Sheriff Ralph Lamb (Dennis Quaid) solving crimes and the other half was about the new guy in town to run his  C a s i n o . Only problem is that we don't really get a whole lot of Vincent Savino (Michael Chiklis)....yet. I'm sure that the series will eventually get into the meat and potato's of why people will be tuning into this. But the Pilot itself, even though it was shot exceptionally well, was only above average for me.

Much better episode over the Pilot. Not sure why, other than that it swung more over to the Mob ties of running a  c a s i n o , as well as trying to take out an informant that could bring down the whole house of cards. Looks like Sarah Jones has joined the cast of Vegas as Mia. It took me a while to finally place her face. It was her hairdo that kept throwing me off. Looks like she's gonna be butting heads with Vincent Savino which could bring some good conflict to the show.

Now they are expanding the pool of players to include Mia's father who could become a serious problem for Vincent as he will eventually look to make a power play to eliminate him as  C a s i n o  manager and get his daughter in as the one in charge. Right now, the whole Mob aspect of the show is by far the most interesting and I think it's actually overshadowing the Sherrif Lamb angle of keeping the streets safe and all that jazz. They need to give Dennis Quaid a bigger role or he runs the risk of becoming a character that people don't want to see whenever Chiklis is on camera. Very cool to see Jonathan Banks popping in as one of the Bosses'.

As much as I like the Mod end of things with regards to the show, I fear, as I said in the previous episode review, Dennis Quaid is becoming a secondary character already. Even Carrie Ann Moss is pretty much non-existent now and she has 3rd billing on the show. If it continues to skew too far into Mob stuff, I wouldn't be shocked at all if Quaid opted out of the series at the end of the season. I'd hate it if that happened, but I wouldn't blame him one bit when the Star doesn't get much to work with here.

As for the episode, it was good. Once again, the Case wasn't all that compelling. But the attempted hit on Vincent Savino tells me something big is coming now that he is looking to take over the Tumbleweed  C a s i n o  and expand without the 'OK' from the bosses back home. Also interesting is the potential romance angle that they are setting up with Deputy Lamb and Mia. That's sure to raise a few eyebrows on both sides of the street.

Well, they finally found a way to work Carrie-Ann Moss back into the show and it looks like she will have something of a bigger role now that they have paired her up alongside Vincent Savino's wife. Could it be that her intentions are to take her and Savino down, but ultimately actually become friends with her, thus having a conflict of interest? A lot of possibilities for sure. Cool to see that Gil Bellows has joined the cast for the foreseeable future as a candidate running for Mayor of Vegas.

It's about time we finally get an extended scene between Lamb and Savino. Up till now it's been a littler here and there, but nothing to sink their teeth into. So, with Savino under the protection of Lamb as they wait for Jones to come whack him, it gave them time to "get to know each other". I hope there are more scenes like that in the future.

I'm counting down the days till Savino has both his new boss and that lounge singer whacked. They are just going to become a big thorn in his side down the road. Actually, they are already thorns. Get 'er done! Also, it's time to give Carrie-Ann Moss a gun and start having her kick some ass, Trinity-Style!!!! I wish the show would stop with the CSI / forensic aspect. It's not what I want from a show set in Vegas about a bunch of Gangsters. This should be full on  C a s i n o  style, not CSI case solving. As for the murder mystery in this episode, it wasn't even all that compelling to begin with. The only good thing worth watching here was David Denman's role as a big spending whale. You all know him best as Roy from The Office.

Another 'okay' episode. For me, it was the cameos I liked more than the actual story. RJ Mitte pops up in this one and since there was no resolution to his story, I'm guessing he will have a few more coming this season. He is best known as Walt Jr. from Breaking Bad. The other cameo of note was Michael Ironside who I have not seen in a while. He has packed on some serious weight. He is starting to look like Brando. Well, if he doesn't pay attention to his weight, he will definitely be heading in that direction. I like Mike in pretty much everything he has done. His role too lends to multiple episodes. So, we should be getting more from him this season. Yay!!

I was surprised that Mia confessed to her father so soon about her dating the town Deputy. But then again, this opens up the story for Vinnie to manipulate him into think she is a rat and spilling vital information about their business. I was wondering why it was taking so long for Vinnie to address the growing problem with Johnny Rizzo. He's a loose canon that needs to be 'silenced'. Pitting him up against the Deputy is a sure way to do that.

I liked the idea of Vincent on a road trip with his two goons and then having to 'rough it' once their car breaks down. But it was the torture scene of Deputy Jack Lamb at the hands of Rizzo that had the biggest impact on the show, especially when Jack shoots and kills Mia's father. This is going to have major consequences for sure.

Now I see how the writers went about crafting their little arc and it's perfect too. When the show first started, I often wondered which of the Lamb's would fall prey to Vincent and now we know. Now that Jack is going out of his way to keep the news from Mia that he shot and killed her father and tampering with evidence to his involvement, this gives Vincent the pressure he has been looking for to basically have a cop in his back pocket. It's just a question of how far down the rabbit hole will Jack go to keep his secret...a secret.

Two Of A Kind
(http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i266/Chiprocks1/Star%20Ratings/HTL_04star.gif)

A couple of surprising things went down in this one. For one, I didn't think Jack would confess to Mia...or anyone for that matter so soon. I figured that they would milk if for all it's worth with Vincent putting the screws to him. Didn't happen. The other thing that was surprising was seeing Ralph destroying evidence to protect Jack's involvement in the killing. One fun fact was the addition of Shawn Doyle. Fans of Dennis Quaid's underrated Frequency (http://pennycan.createaforum.com/dvd's-blu-rays/frequency-(2000)/msg17102/#msg17102) will recognized him as the Nightingale Serial Killer.

Nice for the series to return. It took them long enough. Sheesh! Looks like Mia is starting to take after her father. But then again, anyone that is threaten with with prison time will respond in kind when they find out that rat that's gonna send them up the creek. Looks like they are finally giving Yvonne (Aimee Garcia) something of a story line that isn't just file papers for the Sheriff. Looks like they are setting her up to be a singer. First stop.....Hollywood.

I liked that this episode and story was split between Vegas and Hollywood. Who doesn't love Hollywood stuff? I had been banging my head trying to place the actress that plays Violet and it finally hit me that it was Anna Camp, who I know primarily from The Mindy Project. I had heard she asked out of that show and my guess its because she wanted to come onto Vegas full time. She was downgraded to a recurring character and TMP, so it remains to be seen how much face time she will get on Vegas.

The other cool thing about this episode in particular saw Melinda Clarke joining the ranks as Mia's presumed-dead mother. I didn't even know that she was coming on Vegas, especially since she already has a gig as Amanda on Nikita. Hey, I won't object to seeing her more on both shows and that's a GOOD thing.

Easily my favorite episode so far this season. It had both intrigued and humor. With Dixon Lamb being set up by his former girlfriend Violet, he is looking at going away to prison for assault and battery. Sure, we all know he is innocent and that she is being forced to lie out of fear and self preservation with Silver pulling the strings. The fun of the episode was watching Ralph track down the leads necessary to prove his son's innocence. They may have come to resolution by getting Violet to recant her statement, but I have a feeling we will be seeing a lot more of Silver in the future as he tries to take down the Lamb Family...one by one.

I'm not particularly a fan of Michael Ironside, but I think he may finally have found a role that I think he could be good in. As a rival to Vincent, it's clearly going to escalate into some kind of turf war between the two and he looks like a credible threat as well. As for FBI Agent Byrne, I am not surprised at all that one of the people that he detained to "shake down" would end up shooting him. I've been wanting someone to do just that since he arrived on the show, especially after this episode. This is a knock against the actor that plays him, it's a compliment in the character he plays because he is so good at being "bad". A show is only as good as the "villain". He's not really a villain because all he is doing is following the law, at the expense of innocent people, just to get his man....or in this episode....woman.

This one all about setups and what is sure to follow is going to be big. I just assumed that Ralph would be the Sheriff the entire time that series was on the air. Sure, this is nothing more than temporary "lapse in employment" for the sole purpose of uniting Lamb and Savino together against a common enemy. I can't wait to see how this plays out, especially with Lamb finding out that Porter Gainsley (Michael Ironside) had his wife murdered and not the car "accident" everyone thought it to be.

Interesting development going on with Mia and Tommy (Enver Gjokaj) flirting with each other. It's not gonna stop there and Jack is not gonna be happy when he finds out. I have a feeling that the writers are going to kill off Katherine (Carrie-Anne Moss) in the season finale....or they have her fighting for her life, hanging in the balance if you will for the cliffhanger and then kill her off at the start of Season 2. Just a weird feeling I'm getting. I'd like to see her stay. She's fantastic. That wasn't my opinion at the start of the season with so little screen time on her part. But now, she is a great part to the big picture.

A solid episode, but not what I would call a great Season Finale. With the alliance between Ralph and Savino, I was expecting a lot of bang. The showdown at the end against Porter Gainsley turned out to be nothing more than a moral exercise for Ralph in choosing not to kill him in cold blood for revenge against the man that killed his wife. Like I said, good episode, just didn't quite get there. The ending also looked like a series finale.........

'Vegas' Canceled: CBS Did Not Order A Season 2 (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/05/10/vegas-canceled-cbs_n_3151904.html)

....which it was. I'm not surprised that the show was cancelled. Disappointed, yes. I really enjoyed the second half of the season more so than the first half. They really found their groove and were building something great with the characters and history of both sides of the law. Sucks it was cancelled. The Season Finale does leave some big unanswered questions about Mia and her new f*ck buddy, Jack's future as well as Catherine, still in a coma. Ugh.

Moving thread to Greatest Hits & Misses.....
