Title: Sin City: A Dame To Kill For
Post by: Mac on May 14, 2012, 06:38:13 pm
Well let's start tracking this. I loved Sin City and hope the sequel performs well. Production just starting. A teaser trailer already...

Sin City: A Dame to Kill For will focus on a mysterious woman named Ava and will continue the story introduced in the first installment. A few months ago, director Robert Rodriguez confirmed that stars from the first film Mickey Rourke, Rosario Dawson and Michael Madsen are slated to reprise their roles. Frank Miller, who wrote the popular graphic novel the films are based on, will also be taking on directorial duties for the follow up. Production on the film will begin once Rodriguez wraps his current project Machete Kills starring Danny Trejo.

I love the comic book that the movie will be based on and it's really the last great thing Frank Miller wrote. Since then, it's been pretty much garbage. I still don't think he is all that when it comes to being a Director. Just leave it to Robert Rodriguez. Too many cooks in the kitchen can dilute an otherwise good meal. Any news of Tarantino is going to direct a segment?

Mel Gibson? I dunno about that. He's got a lot of baggage. He'd fit in nicely as a  f u c k e d  up character.

Sure he died in the first Sin City (via electric chair), but that won’t stop Robert Rodriguez from resurrecting ol’ Marv.

Website DL reports that Mickey Rourke is now in negotiations to make a return trip to Sin City: A Dame To Kill For, the Robert Rodriguez/Frank Miller sequel. He’ll reprise his role of Marv, the hulking tough guy with a soft spot for women.

In theaters October 4, 2013, “The film is about Dwight McCarthy planing to have his vengeance against the woman who betrayed him, Ava Lord, while Nancy is trying to cope with Hartigan’s death.”

Michael Clarke Duncan, Angelina Jolie, Rosario Dawson, Michael Madsen and Jessica Alba are all said to be returning.

I was pretty certain that Mickey was already locked up for the sequel a long time ago, along with the rest of the cast.

Filming has started... Yaaaaaa

The actresses have joined a cast including Mickey Rourke, Jessica Alba and Rosario Dawson in Robert Rodriguez and Frank Miller's sequel, which began shooting Monday.

Jaime King and Jamie Chung have boarded Sin City 2, which began shooting on Monday in Austin.

Robert Rodriguez is directing the movie with Frank Miller, the comic book icon who created the Sin City comics that were published by Dark Horse in the 1990s. Rodriguez and Miller teamed up for the stylish 2005 hit adaptation.

Rodriguez and Miller wrote the script for the new movie, which is a combination of comics storylines and a new one written specifically by Miller for the movie. One of the storylines being adapted is A Dame to Kill For, originally published in 1993 and featuring a man named Dwight entangled in a complicated and deadly relationship with a femme fatale named Ava.

Many of the original castmembers are returning for the sequel, including Mickey Rourke, Jessica Alba and Rosario Dawson. (Rourke’s character Marv was killed by electrocution in the first movie but the Dame’s story takes place before and after that film’s events.)

King played the golden-haired prostitute Goldie in the first movie and returns to play her twin sister, Wendy.

Chung is stepping into the heels worn in the first movie by Devon Aoki, the katana-wielding, roller-skating assassin Miho. The character plays a key role in helping Dwight locate the double-dealing Ava.

Rodriguez barely wrapped Machete Kills before jumping into Sin City 2 and is shooting on his soundstages in his native Austin. But while the movie may be underway, casting for major parts is still underway. Ava’s part, originally written for Angelina Jolie, is still unfilled.

And the part of Dwight remains a question mark. The character was played by Clive Owen in the first movie and sources say Owen is understood to be returning.  But the character undergoes facial surgery and appears as a new man, thus the need for a new top-flight actor to play the reconstructed character.

Also still uncast is a newly created character named Johnny, a smooth gambler.

King currently stars as the conniving and social-status seeking Lemon Breeland in CW’s Hart of Dixie. She has the horror movie Silent Night, with Malcolm McDowell and Donal Logue, in the can. She is repped by Gersh and Myman Greenspan.

Chung played Ed Helms’ fiancée in The Hangover Part II and returns for Part III. She appears in RZA’s The Man with the Iron Fists, which opens Friday, and recently did a stint as Mulan in ABC’s One Upon a Time. She is repped by Gersh, 3 Arts Entertainment and Morris Yorn.

Is there a reason that Devon Aoki isn't in this one?

I am curious about what they're shooting it on, the first one had a video-y look that was a little more apparent when they were against greenscreen (and the CGI was rather soft), it's been a few years, I don't know if RR rocks RED yet but I imagine between that and the more "solid" looking CGI we get these days we'll have a more realistic feeling movie (although if they actually went OUTSIDE to some kind of city to shoot a couple angles, that would be good too...)

I was kinda hopeful the entire movie would be shot on Betamax. As for Devon Aoki, I just assumed she was in this one.

Just popped in my Sin City DVD for the first time in ages.  I still have a big issue with the CGI in the movie, you know that they're not really in the locations... especially when they're on the treadmills.  And everything in that world is sort of soft and cartoonish... none of the places really feel REAL, you know?  I really hope that in the time span between the last flick, RR had the sequel in the back of his head and so was just taking reference and plate shots every chance he got.  I know I would have been.  Maybe even go more noir style, shoot back projection style shots for when they're driving.

And I'm also really hoping that they bring people in... I like that RR does so much himself, but his films are missing something because of that.  Anyone would be eager to work on the next Sin City so you know he could bring in some brilliant talent for some stuff like Fincher-style opening titles.

And since current digital cameras get you sharper pictures and pick up more light, you could get a little more experimental and extreme in the shots.  Get more of that stylized lighting in camera on the day rather than play around with it later, you could tell when they did that.
That and the elements, remember the rain at the start making those fakey puddles?  That's gotta change.

As much as we liked the first one, it should be a proof-of-concept for what the second one should be.

Deadline has word that the in-demand actor has just signed on to play a big role in Robert Rodriguez‘s Sin City sequel, Sin City: A Dame to Kill For. Apparently he’s going to be playing Johnny, a role that was meant to go to Johnny Depp at one point, and that is said to be a core character in the overlapping parts of the film’s story lines.

Josh Brolin to Star in Sin City: A Dame to Kill For

Quote
It has been confirmed that Josh Brolin will star in Sin City: A Dame to Kill For (or, for the grammatically inclined, Sin City: A Dame For Whom to Kill), Robert Rodriguez and Frank Miller's long-anticipated Sin City sequel. He'll be playing the role of Dwight. Since Clive Owen played that same role in the first film, this probably means he won't be returning. Brolin will be joining other new cast members Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Christopher Meloni, Dennis Haysbert, and Jamie Chung as well as the returning Mickey Rourke, Jessica Alba, Rosario Dawson, and Jaime King. What's black and white and red all over?

Hot on the heels of yesterday’s announcement that Joseph Gordon-Levitt joined the cast of Frank Miller and Robert Rodriguez‘s ‘Sin City 2‘ comes breaking news that Josh Brolin has signed on too and will star as the film’s lead.

What is this, a mad dash to join ‘Sin City: A Dame to Kill For’ before they run out of green screen? Yesterday we reported that Joseph Gordon-Levitt passed on offers for leads in ‘Godzilla‘ and ‘Guardians of the Galaxy,’ instead choosing another geek property — ‘Sin City 2.’

Today we learn that Josh Brolin has also joined the cast (as well as ‘Law & Order: SVU’s Chris Meloni), replacing Clive Owen as Dwight and reuniting Brolin with Rodriguez, for whom he starred in the ‘Grindhouse’ segment ‘Planet Terror.’

The film, whose official title is ‘Sin City: A Dame to Kill For,’ follows Dwight in a story that takes place before the first film, as he’s tracked down by Ava Lord, the only woman he ever loved, and then things get violently out of hand, as they do in ‘Sin City.’ And if you’re wondering how Josh Brolin can replace Clive Owen, don’t worry — apparently the sequel will explain why Dwight’s face is so different in the first movie.

Says Rodriguez in a quote:

Dwight is a constant character throughout the Sin City world and ‘A Dame To Kill For’ is a defining episode in his life.  We’re looking forward to Josh’s take on Dwight.

‘Sin City 2′ will tell three stories, including an all-new tale written specifically for the film by Frank Miller. The film is currently shooting in Austin, Texas, and will hit theaters on October 4.

Clive Owen's schedule might not allow for a return.  Devon Aoki's not returning because she's preggers.  That sorta thing happens.

Can't wait to see more Hartigan.

Jeremy Piven, Ray Liotta & Juno Temple board Sin City: A Dame to Kill For

Quote
Robert Rodriguez’s Sin City: A Dame to Kill For is naturally one of the movies we’re most looking forward to seeing this year.

Rodriguez returns behind the camera with Frank Miller for the sequel to the cult classic 2005 original film, based on Miller’s series of comics.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt recently joined the project as one of the leads, Johnny. Josh Brolin is also newly cast as Dwight, played by Clive Owen in the original, with the character undergoing facial reconstruction (hence the new casting).

And now The Playlist report that a trio of roles have now been cast, with Jeremy Piven, Ray Liotta, and Juno Temple all boarding the project.

I’m a huge fan of Piven’s in particular, and love everything that I’ve seen Liotta and Temple in as well, and can’t wait to see them join the already-exceptional cast at the end of the year.

Starring alongside Gordon-Levitt, Brolin, Piven, Liotta, and Temple will be Jessica Alba, Jamie Chung, Mickey Rourke, Jaime King, Michael Madsen, Rosario Dawson, and Dennis Haysbert. And with a bit of luck, we might get to see Bruce Willis and Clive Owen reprise their roles from the original, too.

Rodriguez and Miller are once more co-directors on the project, with the duo penning the script alongside William Monahan (The Departed).

Filming has already begun, with production kicking off back in October last year. But with Rodriguez and Miller once more making good use of green screens, there’s no need to be concerned that Piven’s, Liotta’s, or Temple’s roles will be minor. Their roles are currently being kept under wraps, but are very much something to look forward to.

Sin City: A Dame to Kill For will be hitting theatres on 4th October this year, and you can bet it’s going to be one of the best films of the autumn/fall. More as we get it.

Jessica Alba confirms she’ll be dancing again in Sin City 2

As you might remember, Alba’s character Nancy Callahan, is an exotic dancer, with her Stetson-sporting bump-and-grind routine proving one of the highlights of the first film.

And since this next film will pick up before the events of the original, Callahan will be taking to the stage again, in a scene that’s likely to become another fanboy favourite.

“I had to learn a bunch of dance sequences for it,” reveals Alba, adding that she needed three months training to prepare for the role. “I do a lot more dancing in this one. It was kind of crazy. It was very, very difficult, and you'll see why.”

Directed by Robert Rodriguez and co-starring Josh Brolin, Mickey Rourke and Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Sin City: A Dame To Kill For will open in the US on 4 October 2013.

Other than writing and "co-directing" this with Rodriquez, exactly how involved in the movie is Frank Miller? I've not heard a peep or a tweet or anything from the man since the movie started principal photography. I do wonder if Frank is only on set as a "script supervisor".

here's some Frank Miller involvement...

Quote
Apparently it’s not just the fans who lost faith in the Sin City sequel during the lengthy gap between the two films. Said star Jessica Alba in a recent interview:

I think like every six months to a year it was like “We’re going to do it, when’s the next one coming? Oh yeah, we’re going to do it. We’re going to do it. We’re going to do it.” And then at a certain point it was just like OK, I just didn’t believe it. It was like “We’re going to start in the summer, we’re going to start in the fall” but then when we actually got the start date and I was there on the set it was like a dream.

Like the last film, Sin City: A Dame to Kill For will feature several distinct but overlapping storylines. While some of the plot arcs were adapted from Frank Miller‘s graphic novels, Alba revealed that hers had been written just for the movie.

Well this is– mine is an original story so there wasn’t a lot to base it off of, but Frank has been drawing. So it’s just crazy. It was neat to see their process, Robert and Frank’s, and their collaboration and what they inspire from each other and get out of each other and what they’re creating. It’s really like the 2.0 version of Sin City and it’s pretty amazing.

Alba concluded, “It’s going to be rad.” Sin City: A Dame to Kill For opens October 2.

rad? did she really say that?

Fans eagerly awaiting the long-gestating Sin City: A Dame To Kill For will have to wait a little longer, with The Weinstein Company announcing that the film has been put back until 2014.

The sequel had initially been expected to arrive in US cinemas in October 2013, but has now been given a new release date of 22 August 2014.

The announcement doesn’t specify the reason for the delay, only that Robert Rodriguez’s plans of opening two films within weeks of each other has been scuppered.

Machete Kills is still expected to arrive later this year, but the news will come as a blow to those who have been patiently waiting for another Sin City movie since the first one was released in 2005.

Hopefully this will be the last of the delays, and we can look forward to seeing Josh Brolin, Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Eva Green head up the new-look ensemble in 2014. And at least we'll have that Machete sequel to tide us over in the meantime...

I don't mind waiting.  We're already getting Machete this year anyway, so RR is still busy.  And IDEALLY the special effects will be a little sharper and they can do a couple extra tweaks on it, we can have more of a push with the trailers and the like, more build-up.  I mean, I haven't heard ANYTHING about this all year anyways, it would be lost in the noise if it came out this year.  AND if the company likes it and wants a third flick, that means they can start working on it before the next one hits and that's less time between sequels.

If you are referring to the look/style of the movie, then yes, it's déjà vu and it should be. It's in keeping in line with the comic book series. If you are referring to the story, not to worry. It's not the same, although the Trailer does kind of paint the picture as being exactly that.
