Shazam! (2019)
3 1/2 Stars out of 5

Trailer

Shazam! is exactly what I expected the movie to be. Just based on the trailer I knew it was going to be a lot lighter in tone than the rest of the DCU films and that is a good thing. The movie isn't bad, but it isn't great either. You can do "lighter" and not delve into complete parody, which Shazam! does do. It's as if they are actually making fun of the very genre they are trying to lift up. I think because this movie and the rest of the DCU are so far apart in tone, that actually putting them in the same universe just doesn't mesh like they want it to . Like I said, it's not a bad flick and I thought Zachary Levi was a good choice in the lead role. Can't really see anyone else that could pull it off. You should definitely check out the movie, but look at it more like Big Meets Greatest American Hero instead of any of the recent Comic Book flicks that have come out. You'll be better off for it.

Veronica Mars (2014)
4 Stars out of 5

Trailer

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iksrM_LNZ6s

Anyone that knows me, knows I'm a HUGE fan of the series Veronica Mars and of course of Kristen Bell. Duh! Anyway, I just watched the Veronica Mars Movie for the first time today....5 years after buying the DVD. What? Yeah. Exactly. What indeed! Okay, some explaining is needed here of course. How can I be a fan and wait that long? Well, my original intention when I bought the DVD was that I was going to do a Veronica Mars DVD marathon, first with Season 1-3 of the TV show and then cap it off with the movie. But I just never could find the time to shoehorn this marathon into existence. Fast-forward 5 years and Season 4 now a reality and currently playing on Hulu and something I've know for awhile as something I was making plans to see, I just couldn't put off watching the movie once and for all. There. All caught up today.

Okay, so what about the movie? Was it any good? Well, it opens up great with the "previously on..." recap. But for some reason, even though Bell is there as Mars, I just wasn't into the movie the way I had envisioned it. It just seemed a "by-the-book" movie. Wasn't bad. Wasn't good. Just middle of the road. It took maybe 30 minutes before it finally "felt" like a legit Veronica Mars episode and once it did, I was so invested in where the story was going. Sure, Mars investigating a murder of someone she knew from High School has already been done before. See Season 1. But it still worked here. But for VM fans like myself, it's the cameos people want to see and it was cool to see all those familiar faces from the first 3 Seasons. I won't dive into spoilers here, if anyone plans on watching it for themselves. But I will say that I legit loved the Freaks and Geeks connection with Martin Starr, Dave Allen and James Franco. So yeah, I'm 5 years late to the party, but the movie was definitely worth waiting for. A definite Buy...which you already know I have.

Now I have Season 4 to watch......

Avengers: Endgame (2019)
10 Stars out of 10

Trailer

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TcMBFSGVi1c

Avengers: Endgame was THE movie I have been waiting to see for however long it's been since the conclusion of Infinity War. The amount of hype and expectations was at an all time high. I try to keep everything even keel because if I don't, I'm setting myself for a huge disappointment (*see Game of Thrones Series Finale*) for the most recent letdown. I was legit concerned going into Endgame that there could be a few missteps along the way. I'm happy to say that Endgame delivered in more ways an one.

Before I go any further, I do have to say that Endgame more or less 'Jumped the Shark' with the crutch of Time Travel. But this wasn't all that surprising. I saw it come. We all saw it coming at the conclusion of Infinity War. It's the only way to bring everyone back. Well, most everyone. Okay. Moving on. With Time Travel the big plot point for the movie, it offers a wealth of comedic scenes to play out. First off, all the Time Travel references here were fantastic with Terminator, Hot Tub Time Machine and of course Back to the Future getting shout-outs (along with a host of other films in the genre). But the biggest twist on this was being able to go back in time to specific dates (that line up with Marvels biggest MCU movies) and filming additional scenes that we NEVER got to see in the original films. These were fantastic and more than that, insanely funny. Seeing Banner/Hulk watching himself in the first Avengers movie was f*cking hilarious. Especially feigning boredom of having to act like "Hulk" and wreck things so as to blend in.

Speaking of Hulk. We've come all the way from 'Hulk Smash' to basically talking as Banner throughout the entire flick as Hulk. I was just amazed at how good the CGI was in blending both Mark Ruffalo and Hulk as one. So with the gang hopping around in time, trying to retrieve the Infinity Stones, which in itself were like mini Heist Flicks, it all leads to the inevitable showdown between the Original Avengers and Thanos. The ensuing fight move than delivered here as well. When Captain America wields Thor's Hammer, it was literally the best, most thrilling thing in a sea of thrilling moments.

When those that perished in Infinity War return to stand alongside of the Avengers, you are clearly witnessing a monumental moment in Cinema. The best of course was seeing Spider-Man/Peter Parker return and to see the look on Tony's face, the guilt that has consumed him for 5 years just drift away in a matter of seconds as they embrace. Speaking of Tony, when Tony Stark, with Infinity Gauntlet in in hand, snaps and does away with all things Thanos, it was electric. But it comes at a price as his body can't handle that kind of power and he pays the ultimate price. There are many movies that can make me tear up. This one did.

I'm still processing the movie as I watched it late last night. Some things are still fresh in my mind, while other's not so much as I'm trying to place all the puzzle pieces from all the MCU movies. Loved the End Credits which was a 'Call to Action' send off of the majority of Big and Small characters in practically all the MCU flicks. It was perfect. Loved Stan Lee's cameo as well. All in all, Endgame delivers and is one of the greatest Super Hero movies of all time. I gave both this one and Infinity War 10 Stars, but I will say that Infinity War is slightly "better" for different reasons. This is definitely worth a Buy.

Cobra Kai (Season 2 - 2019)
4 Stars out of 5

Trailer

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VaXoQJx3jYs

I waited a long time for Season 2 for a couple of reasons. First off, they laid the ground work in Season 1 so perfectly, turning everything on it's head with both Daniel and especially that of Johnny. But the second half of the equation that really had me wanting to see where this was going was the return of John Kreese. This was the key for what would basically anchor Season 2. Even though nothing was really said at the end of Season 1 with his return, I always knew that he main objective would be to take control of Cobra Kai once again and sure enough, that's what we got this season. With the rivalry between Daniel / Miyagi-Do and Johnny / Cobra Kai escalating, it all comes to a head in the Season Finale between both factions.

This is where I thought the tone of everything was thrown out the window. It came across more comedic than something to be taken seriously within this Universe they have created. It was kinda like watching the TV Version of 3 O'Clock High in a lot of ways. Anyway, the fight ends in a tragic way with Miguel being kicked off the balcony and landing below motionless and end up in the Hospital. His condition is left unknown as the second season comes to a close. Naturally everyone is pointing fingers and one in particular is taking the blame with Johnny on a bender and heading down the wrong path most likely, setting up Season 3.

Overall, this was decent followup and there were a couple of stand out moments. Tops being of course the reunion between Johnny and his old Cobra Kai teammates from the Original Karate Kid movie. Seeing Tommy (Rob Garrison), Bobby (Ron Thomas) and Jimmy (Tony O'Dell) was a kick (Pun intended). Man, they all look so old. They actually make William Zabka look very young by comparison. The other that most people are sure to talk about is the final shot that ends Season 2. But before I go there, I need to set it up first. A few episodes earlier, Johnny is trying his hand a Online Dating and grows frustrated at his disastrous blind dates and feeling nostalgic, he drunk texts Ali an email. Cut to the end with Johnny distraut over the guilt at what happened to Miguel, he throws his phone out on the beach as he walks off.

Cut to a close up on his phone screen and we see a message from Ali, requesting a friendship on Facebook. So, are they actually telegraphing to us that Elisabeth Shue is on board and will be popping up in Season 3? Please make this happen! This is what EVERYONE wants. Anyone that is a fan of the first movie wants this to happen. I for one want it to happen. But, I suspect this isn't likely to happen at all and is just a way of keeping the character alive within the context of the Karate Kid Universe, much in the same way they are doing with Dutch (Chad McQueen), who hasn't acted in 20 years. I would love to see both come back, if just for a cameo, I'll take it.

Okay, with all that out of the way, as the Season Finale was playing out, I was actually trying to think of what the big reveal would be. The thing that got people talking while we wait for Season 3 and for me, all I could think of was Kreese bringing both Terry Silver and Mike Barnes into the fold as they take over Cobra Kai, much in the way they teamed up in Karate Kid III. I was anticipating it. Thus, it didn't happen and as I mentioned before, it's the Ali text that they ended it on.

Tell me this isn't you Must-See movie of the year. It's great to see that Joe Pesci has come out of his 20 year retirement to do this. Just look at the talent in this movie: Robert De Niro, Al Pacino, Joe Pesci, Steven Zaillian and Martin Scorsese. Sheesh! 5 for 5!

Why Do People Love the Sony Aibo Robot Dog?

Looks, the tech is more than impressive. It's groundbreaking in what we get here. But with that said, I find this more than disturbing that people (in the video and around the world) can "switch" that reality button in their brain and convince themselves that this is real. It's beyond odd and it creeps me the f*ck out.

How soon can we rub a Terminator's belly and get it to fetch our newspaper in the morning?

The Meg (2018)
3 Stars out of 5

Trailer

The Meg is a check-your-brain-at-the-door flick. It's not meant to be taken seriously and this one definitely shouldn't be. I have issues with it for sure, but overall, it's a fun flick to zone out to if this is something your looking to do. If you've seen one Shark Movie, you've seen them all. Going into The Meg, I was of the mindset that this was going to be some stupid "Godzilla from the deep that attacks beaches" plot and in a way it is....but not in the way I envisioned it. I think the writer was smart enough to actually make this story somewhat plausible in a movie-kinda-way. By that I mean, the writer at least gives us a "logical" way in explaining how a Megalodon could exist in this day and age by having it explained that the Mariana Trench has been housing Megs all this time and that the only thing keeping them at bay is by having it concealed by a thermocline of hydrogen sulfide. Estentially a "Temperature Force field" if you will. Like I said, mindless fun. You know what you're getting, so don't expect much from this. Worth a Rent. Bonus points for how they actually kill the Meg. Very satisfying....and ironic.

Creed II (2018)
4 Stars out of 5

Trailer

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ApQbQ0iJQO0

Creed II more or less picks up pretty close to where we left off (well, by 6 titles defenses), but it's close enough. The BIG draw for this movie is the fact that Adonis is taking on Viktor Drago, which of course means the return of Ivan Drago, last seen in Rocky IV. Now my big concern going into this was that this would be a carbon copy of that movie and for the most part, it is. There are a bunch of call backs happening throughout the movie that it's unmistakable how much alike they are. Where Creed II excels at are the smaller, quieter moments which center around family and to be honest, I never really knew what this movie was going to be on its own, even with the obvious sign post in my face. Simply put, this is a bout Fathers and Sons (and Daughters). The sins of the father being passed down to their child and how a lifetime is affected by it. You have Adonis coming to terms with his own Father Apollo, Viktor and his Father Ivan and Rocky and his own Son.

Yes, this is still a boxing movie and it delivers in a big way in that regard. The choreography is damn impressive and the Big Fight at the end was thrilling to watch. As I said, a lot of call backs to Rocky IV, and that means that the fight happens back in Russia which puts Adonis more at a disadvantage, which makes his comeback all the more rewarding. But it's how the fight ends that truly took me by surprise...even with all the evidence laid before me. I still didn't see it coming. The relationship between Viktor and Ivan was fascinating to watch. Ivan is consumed with restoring his name and glory to the point of not really seeing his own Son other than just a "means to an end". But it's at the end that he finally realizes what he has become and what he has done to his Son. Ivan does the one thing that even Rocky couldn't do: Throw in the towel....to save the one that he loves. I thought it was a brilliant move story-wise because this is the thing that has haunted Rocky for years since the events of Rocky IV.

I absolutely recommend Creed II. This is definitely another movie for me to add to my DVD Collection. If that isn't enough, there are a couple of cameos that deliver for me as well. I truly was stunned to see Brigitte Nielsen return as Ludmilla Drago. Early in the movie when Ivan is telling Rocky his story about how their fight cost him everything: His name, respect...and his Wife, the line comes off more like a throwaway line to explain why she isn't in the movie. And then.....BAM! There she is. She doesn't have more than a few words of dialogue, but she owns the couple of scenes she is in because her character is exactly the same all these years later. The other cameo that I was hopeful in seeing play out given how Rocky is trying to reconcile with his own Son Robert. I honestly wasn't expecting to see Milo Ventimiglia return since he didn't appear in Creed I. So, yeah, definitely check out this movie. Worth it.

Side note, my Grandpa's favorite film in the Rocky series was Rocky IV. I just wished he could have seen this one. He would have loved it for sure. While watching Creed II, I could hear him in my head cheering along and getting into this one.

Aquaman (2018)
3 1/2 Stars out of 5

Trailer

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZmqJJqFX_CU

I really didn't know what to expect from Aquaman given the sh*tty track record from the DCU (Man of Steel, BvS, Justice League and Suicide Squad) with the lone winner being Wonder Woman. Aquaman has never been a character I cared for. For me it's a huge step down from the likes of Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman. Although I did like the take on the character in Justice League, in spite of a POS film. But can the character carry a 2 hour flick? Yes and no. Now I don't have anything against Jason Momoa at all. He's the only person on screen that matters and actually delivers. My peeve (minor) is the amount of Special FX. Yes, I know, you can't really make an Aquaman flick without it. But it's sensory overload and after awhile, my brain just couldn't take any more of it. It's a mash up of Avatar underwater with a pinch of The Abyss. And then it turns into this sort of Indiana Jones crusade for the King's Trident, which I kinda liked because it was above water. And the ending, sh*t man, they TOTALLY swiped the scene from The Karate Kid Part II. I was totally prepared for Arthur to "honk" Orm's nose. No lie! The movie is fun for the most part if you can get past the mind-numbing amount of CGI. It's certainly better than most of the other DCU flicks....except Wonder Woman which sits on top. But yeah, Aquaman is worth a Rent.

Captain Marvel (2019)
4 Stars out of 5

Trailer

I really wasn't sure what to expect from Captain Marvel. If it wasn't for the final shot of Avengers Infinity War where Fury sends a destressed signal to Captain Marvel, this movie wouldn't really even be something I'd be looking for. It is what it is. As for the movie, I liked it. Not perfect by any stretched and is not in the same league as some of the other Marvel flicks that have come out lately. But as a "stand alone" origin story, they deliver and hit all the spots they need to hit. The start of the movie is a bit slow for my taste. But once Carol Danvers crash lands on Earth (very, veeeeeery similar to Superman's arrival), the flick finds its footing and things pick up quite a bit. I won't bore you with the plot details as it's too extensive to write here and make sense of it all for those that have not bee paying attention in previous Marvel movies.

As for Captain Marvel, I mention that it's her Origin Story, but it's also an Origin Story for Nick Fury as well and to some extent Agent Coulson, although he is not featured enough in the movie to call it the same for him. The De-aging technology they are now using in Hollywood has come a long way and it's getting better each time. Seeing both Sam Jackson and Clark Gregg is just mind blowing to see. You really can't tell anymore because they have gotten to the point of refinement that those early versions of the tech are now long gone.

There are some standout spots in the film that are worth talking about. First off....Stan Lee. Loved the opening MARVEL Logo that kicks off all the films. Instead of showing all the characters in the MCU, they went with an all-out Tribute for the man. And for his cameo, the set up had me howling as we see Stan reading a script for Mallrats. Remember, Captain Marvel is set in the 90's, music, fashion and everything that comes with it...including when Mallrats. So the cameo was pretty clear-cut. But if it needs to be explained for those that don't get the Easter Egg. It's Stan reading for his eventual appearance in the movie. I gotta see what Kevin Smith thinks of this. I'm sure he has a lot to say on the matter. There are plenty of these kinds of Easter Eggs in the movie. You're just gonna have to check it out for yourself. Worth a Rent for sure.

Star Wars Resistance (Season 1 - 2018)
4 Stars out of 5

Trailer

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m7Pls-vYWwM

I went into Star Wars Resistance the same way I went into Star Wars Rebels. Skeptical. Like Rebels, I went in think it's going to be nothing but a "Kids Show", dumbed down for the masses to sell toys to kids, etc... So, as much as I wanted to believe that Resistance would follow in the same path that Rebels took, I still had it in my head that it was going to be nothing more than a 'Saturday Morning Cartoon'. Boy, was I ever wrong. The animation is damn good. Really good. But not only that, we get a bunch of fun and interesting characters to get us to through Season 1. Hey, there is something to be said for the fact that Anthony Daniels, Oscar Isaac, Gwendoline Christie, Liam McIntyre and Elijah Wood lend their voices, which was really cool.

The story itself was pretty good as well, taking place just before the events of The Force Awakens, which of course explains why we see the likes of Poe Dameron, Gwendoline Christie and BB-8, which is always cool to get. Fan Service does have it's place. With that said, there are new characters that I really like, the best being Neeku Vozo who is funny as f*ck. Seriously, he made me bust out laughing plenty of times throughout Season 1. Can't forget CB-23 who takes over for BB-8 when he leaves for his Force Awakens adventure. Overall, fantastic series and I can't wait for Season 2. One thing I gotta point out, there were a bunch of scenes, scenarios, character reactions that made me think of Space Ace (Cartoon arcade game). Definitely check it out. Kind weird that my binge watching for this series culminates on today of all days with Disneyland's Galaxy Edge opening today.
