AC/DC (Highway To Hell) 1979

Rolling Stones 500 Greatest Albums Of All Time
Highway To Hell
at #199

Highway To Hell is definitely the definitive AC/DC album in the Bon Scott era. Everything was spot on from Angus' guitar playing to Bon's vocals and the songwriting and production was top notch as well. Robert John "Mutt" Lange production hands were all over this. And there's one song in particular that always reminds me of Def Leppard (or the other way around since AC/DC came before.....). I'm talking about Touch Too Much. Listen to this one and you will "get" how important production is and also, how influential a song can be on other singers, i.e. Joe Elliot. I have to disagree with Rolling Stones ranking of Highway To Hell at #199. This is definitely Top 20 IMO.

It's a shame that this album is "tainted" with the whole Richard Ramirez controversy with the song Night Prowler. For those that have never heard about it, back in 1985, a Serial Killer was on the loose terrorizing LA and once captured, the song was linked to him as his favorite AC/DC song as well as being the impetus for his mass killing spree. The song, even though it sounds sinister had nothing to do with anything dark and ominous.

Quote
On VH1's Behind the Music on AC/DC, the band claimed that while the song had taken on a murderous connotation by Ramírez, it is actually about a boy sneaking into his girlfriend's bedroom at night

On a lighter note, the ending of Night Prowler always makes me laugh with Bon's final recorded lyrics for the song and his tenure with AC/DC. He was a fan of Mork and Mindy and ended the song with Mork's catchphrase 'Shazbot, Nanu Nanu!'.

Highly recommend this one to anyone. If anyone ask me what to start an AC/DC collection with, I gladly point to this one first.

Fave Songs: All of 'em. Damn it's really hard to choose an MVP here. But at the end of the day I gotta go with Highway To Hell, Touch Too Much, Walk All Over You and Night Prowler as Co-MVP.

Album cover ftw!!! This is hands down the best cover for the band and I put this as #5 on my all time favorite covers. As a kid, there was a part of me that really thought that Angus had horns.  ;D

AC/DC (Powerage) 1978

Powerage is touted by many AC/DC fans as being the best in the Bon Scott years. It's a great album, but personally I wouldn't go that far and say it's the best of that Era. Underrated...yes. Best...no. Having said that, this is one I very rarely play anymore. There's really not a whole lot to talk about here other than that the 3 best tracks are down below.

Fave Songs: Rock N' Roll Damnation, Riff Raff and Sin City.

Album cover ftw! This one scared the **** out of me as a kid. Angus getting electrocuted is enough to scar any kid that doesn't know any better. The back cover is the UK version of the vinyl. Take notice that the track list is completely different with a song being omitted all together. Rock N' Roll Damnation was never included on the UK release and in it's place is Cold Hearted Man, which itself got replaced by the foremention song on the US release of Powerage.

When I turn on satellite radio, my go to choice is Adult Alternative. I'm always looking for something new. My personal burned CD's I lean heavily to Trip Hop. And that's kind of misleading. It's the downtempo stuff I like. Much like ambient with some beats.

Trip Hop? What the ****! Never in a million years would I have associated that to your musical taste.

AC/DC (Let There Be Rock) 1977 - Australian

International Cover

Let There Be Rock to me is where Bon Scott really found himself as a force to be reckoned with as a singer. Sure, many fans will point to Dirty Deeds. But to me I just think that as a whole, this album is much stronger, with tighter songs and singing. As great as Dirty Deeds is, this one gets the edge IMO.

There are so many great tracks here. Go Down is a great way to open the album. Dog Eat Dog and of course the title track Let There Be Rock is about as primal as you can get here. And the outro solo at the end of Let There Be Rock is still the best solo on the album. It's so infectious that it makes me want to take a break right now and pop in Rock Band 2 just so I can play to it. Good stuff. I highly recommend this album to anyone that hasn't already done so.  This is my Halloween party right now.

The tracklist differs from the Australian version and that of the International version. The Australian album contains Crabsody In Blue, but on the International release, the song was replaced with Problem Child.

Fave Songs: All of 'em. But I gotta go with Overdose and Whole Lotta Rosie as the albums Co-MVP.

I prefer the International album cover which is what I got as a kid and I consider it to be a classic. But the best AC/DC cover is yet to come.

AC/DC (Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap) 1976 - International

Australian Cover

Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap opens up with one of the best tracks ever for any album. The title track still kicks mucho ass. I play this album a lot and it's directly tied into wanting to hear this song over and over again. But the entire album is so good from top to bottom. I still to this day crack up every time I hear Big Balls. How that song made it onto vinyl given the time it came out was pretty ballsy (pun intended) on the part of the record company.

As much as I love Dirt Cheap, I think the last half of the album is by far the best with There's Gonna Be Some Rockin', Ain't No Fun (waiting Round To Be A Millionaire) , Ride On and Squealer being my fave songs here. Ride On is about as close to a "ballad" as you will ever get. The single Jailbreak was released on their Australian version of the album and not the International release. But it still deserves to have it's video included here.

Fave Songs: Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap, Love At First Feel, There's Gonna Be Some Rockin', Ain't No Fun (waiting Round To Be A Millionaire) and Ride On. Very difficult in picking an MVP. So I'll say that all those listed in my Fave Songs get that honor.

Love the Album Cover.

AC/DC (High Voltage) 1976 International

AC/DC (High Voltage) 1975 Australia Cover

AC/DC (T.N.T.) 1975 Australia Cover

High Voltage (1975) and T.N.T. (1975) were the first 2 albums released by AC/DC in Australia. Their 3rd release (1st International) was AC/DC High Voltage (1976), which was nothing more than a compilation of songs from their 2 Australian releases. Angus Young on Lead Guitars, Malcolm Young on Rhythm Guitar, Bon Scott on Lead Vocals, Mark Evans on Bass and Phil Rudd on Drums. Also contributing is Tony Currenti on Drums and George Young on Bass. Yes, he is brother to Angus and Malcolm.

As for High Voltage (1976), I love this one. But I'll be the first to admit that I don't listen to it as much as I use to. But listening to it now, it sounds fantastic and is a great rock record. It's not perfect by any means. But it has some great songs that require multiple spins. What's remarkable about listening to this one now for the first time in a loooooooooong time, is how little the band has change over the years. And I love it for that very reason. I like that they have never tried to "stay with the times" and jump on the latest music flavor of the week to be "relevant" to the masses. So, if you have listened to any newer AC/DC albums, then technically you have heard High Voltage. Can I Sit Next To You Girl is just about the coolest little boogie song you will ever hear. Why this isn't in Rock Band is shameful.

Fave Songs: It's A Long Way To The Top, Rock N' Roll Singer, Live Wire, T.N.T., Can I Sit Next To You Girl, Little Lover and High Voltage. MVP goes to...Can I Sit Next To You Girl

I've never cared for the International Album cover. It is what it is.

P!nk (Funhouse) 2008

Singles

I can't recall any artist, let alone a female one at that, that has had a streak of relevant, near perfect releases that just don't suck. P!nk, once again knocks it so far out of the park, that she may have done the impossible: Not being able to top this album: Funhouse. P!nk had alot to measure up to with both M!ssundaztood and Try This. I'm Not Dead, although a very good record, just wasn't perfect. This was where I was "ok, this is where the downward slide of the artist begins". My fears were quickly dispelled after the first 3 songs for Funhouse. And then it got reeeeeallly good.

Personal Fave: "So What", "Sober", "I Don't Believe You", "One Foot Wrong", "Please Don't Leave Me", "Mean" and "Glitter In The Air". But the MVP goes to "Ave Mary A". Luv it.

I'm always playing P!nk's stuff and I'm a huge fan of M!ssundaztood and Try This, but right now, I gotta go with this as the best of the bunch. This is rock music with some ballads thrown in. Not bubble gum pop music like those of Britney and Christina.

I ordered her 2 Concert DVD's the other day. Can't wait to get them.  Should arrive today or tomorrow.

I stand behind my original 10 star rating for Funhouse. This is just good **** all around. She doesn't repeat herself anywhere on the album. Each song is a complete original and instantly recognizable. There are a handful of songs that could have easily been hit singles if the record company ever chose to release them as such. Ave Mary A is one of them that absolutely should have gotten a push.

Please Don't Leave Me, Mean and Ave Mary A are still tops in my book from this one.

P!nk (I'm Not Dead) 2006

Platinum Edition Cover

Singles

After two straight flawless albums (M!ssundaztood and Try This), P!nk obviously had something live up to. This is a good album, but IMO, slightly below the other 2. Great songs, and hooks. But I think it just didn't seemed to flow in the same way as the others did. But I still recommend I'm Not Dead to anyone out there looking for something to listen too. I actually gave this one an even lower rating (from 4 Stars to 3 1/2 Stars) since the last time I listened to this one. Like I said before, it just doesn't jell as a whole to my ears. Some really great songs here. But it just doesn't measure up to Missundaztood and Try This.

Runaway and Leave Me Alone (I'm Lonely) are still the best on here though. Cuz I Can was the final single released for this album. But alas there's no cover art as it was released as a digital download only.

Personal faves: Nobody Knows, Dear Mr. President, Leave Me Alone (I'm Lonely), Runaway, and I Got Money Now.

My biggest fear was that this would be where things would go downhill with her next record. How wrong I was in that.

P!nk (Try This) 2003

Singles

It's really a toss up which I like better. This album or Misunnderztood. This is a great follow up to a mega hit album. And it's not a rehash or a sequel. It would have been so easy to fall into that trap. But P!nk manage to create another completely original disc full of great songs that have tons of hooks and great vocals.

I think the majority of people that have never really listened to P!nk, just assume that she is bubble gum pop and unfortunately get's lumped in with the likes of Britney and Christina, based on the videos she releases. I understand that the record company wants hits and will of course go with what they think will appeal to the masses of 15 year olds. But the rest of her album is actually very introspective and deep. Very layered, and far from what I would call bubble gum pop. This is as good as it gets. Just plain and simple...awesome stuff from her.

Personal faves: Trouble, God Is A DJ, Last To Know, Tonight's The Night, Catch Me While I'm Sleeping, Save My Life. Catch Me While I'm Sleeping is still my favorite from Try This and is clearly the MVP here. But Waiting For Love is a close 2nd. Just so many great ****ing songs on here.

Awesome cover btw.

Be sure to pick up the Uncensored version of the album to score the hidden track: Hooker. That P!nk sure has a filthy mouth.  ;D
