Oz The Great And Powerful - Sam Raimi

Quote
Sam Raimi’s film that digs into the origins of the Wizard Of Oz is due next March. And the first poster has just turned up…

Interestingly, just as The Amazing Spider-Man is opening in cinemas, Disney chooses this moment to release the first poster for one of its upcoming films, Oz The Great And Powerful. It’s interesting because Raimi was originally going to making Spider-Man 4 for Sony, having directed the previous three, but that was before the studio delayed the return of Spidey for a year, and went with Marc Webb’s reboot instead. Which came out this week.

Still, Oz The Great And Powerful, which explores the origins of the Wizard of Oz, looks really quite strong. The cast includes Mila Kunis, James Franco, Rachel Weisz, Michelle Williams and Zach Braff, and with the release of this poster, we wonder if a teaser trailer might not be too far behind….

New ‘Oz: The Great and Powerful’ Poster Takes the Kitchen-Sink Approach, With Hideous Results

Quote
One of the most intirguing aspects of Sam Raimi‘s Oz: The Great and Powerful has been its eye-popping aesthetic. Earlier posters and the trailer were filled with dazzling color and lush landscapes — which, okay, were more than a little reminiscent of Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland, thanks to the involvement of production designer Robert Stromberg. But the visuals weren’t really the big problem with that movie.

The latest poster retains the same fairy tale feel, but then cranks it up way, way too high. There’s a little bit of everything here, from flying monkeys to teapot houses and a fat, happy munchkin, but the slapdash way they’re thrown together makes the poster makes it look less like a professional piece of work than a slapdash collage assembled by a hyperactive kid emulating Lisa Frank.

Good gawd man... that's awful

I'm so sick of ugly-ass posters, I haven't seen anything I want to hang on my wall in years-- and I'm in need of some new display.

Saw the trailer in 3D today for the first time in front of Wreck-It-Ralph, and it was... mokay.  Saw it before, but it just looks like Alice in Wonderland.  Which I didn't care for.  Plus I'm still so over prequels and being the chosen one who's got to save the strange new land he's stumbled into and so on.

I feel like I've seen all the creatures before.  Nothing here looks new or particularly exciting, and while it may be old-fashioned, it's not like "it was always there and we never knew it" like I feel it should be.

All I'll say, and this thought keeps popping up when I hear about new movies, is "we're making 20th century movies in a 21st century world."

Oz the Great and Powerful (Trailer #2)

If it weren't for the fact that they say right up from that this is a Sam Raimi film, I would have guessed this was another Tim Burton production. I'm really not sold on this yet. A lot of eye candy for sure, but it's gonna come down to story and characters. I think this is a wait and see approach for me. Will wait till the reviews start pouring in from film-goers (not paid critics). I know I won't see this in the theater, but will put this on the maybe for 'Waiting For DVD' list.

It appears they are taking a very different perspective on the story telling. Now, as you said, if it's a good story... then I'm interested.
