Yeaaaa, No

Josh Brolin to Star in Sin City: A Dame to Kill For

Quote
It has been confirmed that Josh Brolin will star in Sin City: A Dame to Kill For (or, for the grammatically inclined, Sin City: A Dame For Whom to Kill), Robert Rodriguez and Frank Miller's long-anticipated Sin City sequel. He'll be playing the role of Dwight. Since Clive Owen played that same role in the first film, this probably means he won't be returning. Brolin will be joining other new cast members Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Christopher Meloni, Dennis Haysbert, and Jamie Chung as well as the returning Mickey Rourke, Jessica Alba, Rosario Dawson, and Jaime King. What's black and white and red all over?

Why is Clive Owen not returning? I thought this was a given that he would be back. Sigh.

Hot on the heels of yesterday’s announcement that Joseph Gordon-Levitt joined the cast of Frank Miller and Robert Rodriguez‘s ‘Sin City 2‘ comes breaking news that Josh Brolin has signed on too and will star as the film’s lead.

What is this, a mad dash to join ‘Sin City: A Dame to Kill For’ before they run out of green screen? Yesterday we reported that Joseph Gordon-Levitt passed on offers for leads in ‘Godzilla‘ and ‘Guardians of the Galaxy,’ instead choosing another geek property — ‘Sin City 2.’

Today we learn that Josh Brolin has also joined the cast (as well as ‘Law & Order: SVU’s Chris Meloni), replacing Clive Owen as Dwight and reuniting Brolin with Rodriguez, for whom he starred in the ‘Grindhouse’ segment ‘Planet Terror.’

The film, whose official title is ‘Sin City: A Dame to Kill For,’ follows Dwight in a story that takes place before the first film, as he’s tracked down by Ava Lord, the only woman he ever loved, and then things get violently out of hand, as they do in ‘Sin City.’ And if you’re wondering how Josh Brolin can replace Clive Owen, don’t worry — apparently the sequel will explain why Dwight’s face is so different in the first movie.

Says Rodriguez in a quote:

Dwight is a constant character throughout the Sin City world and ‘A Dame To Kill For’ is a defining episode in his life.  We’re looking forward to Josh’s take on Dwight.

‘Sin City 2′ will tell three stories, including an all-new tale written specifically for the film by Frank Miller. The film is currently shooting in Austin, Texas, and will hit theaters on October 4.

Clive Owen's schedule might not allow for a return.  Devon Aoki's not returning because she's preggers.  That sorta thing happens.

Can't wait to see more Hartigan.

Jeremy Piven, Ray Liotta & Juno Temple board Sin City: A Dame to Kill For

Quote
Robert Rodriguez’s Sin City: A Dame to Kill For is naturally one of the movies we’re most looking forward to seeing this year.

Rodriguez returns behind the camera with Frank Miller for the sequel to the cult classic 2005 original film, based on Miller’s series of comics.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt recently joined the project as one of the leads, Johnny. Josh Brolin is also newly cast as Dwight, played by Clive Owen in the original, with the character undergoing facial reconstruction (hence the new casting).

And now The Playlist report that a trio of roles have now been cast, with Jeremy Piven, Ray Liotta, and Juno Temple all boarding the project.

I’m a huge fan of Piven’s in particular, and love everything that I’ve seen Liotta and Temple in as well, and can’t wait to see them join the already-exceptional cast at the end of the year.

Starring alongside Gordon-Levitt, Brolin, Piven, Liotta, and Temple will be Jessica Alba, Jamie Chung, Mickey Rourke, Jaime King, Michael Madsen, Rosario Dawson, and Dennis Haysbert. And with a bit of luck, we might get to see Bruce Willis and Clive Owen reprise their roles from the original, too.

Rodriguez and Miller are once more co-directors on the project, with the duo penning the script alongside William Monahan (The Departed).

Filming has already begun, with production kicking off back in October last year. But with Rodriguez and Miller once more making good use of green screens, there’s no need to be concerned that Piven’s, Liotta’s, or Temple’s roles will be minor. Their roles are currently being kept under wraps, but are very much something to look forward to.

Sin City: A Dame to Kill For will be hitting theatres on 4th October this year, and you can bet it’s going to be one of the best films of the autumn/fall. More as we get it.

That quote must be old given that it hopes Bruce Willis returns, which already has been confirmed as a Yes.

Jessica Alba confirms she’ll be dancing again in Sin City 2

Quote
As you might remember, Alba’s character Nancy Callahan, is an exotic dancer, with her Stetson-sporting bump-and-grind routine proving one of the highlights of the first film.

And since this next film will pick up before the events of the original, Callahan will be taking to the stage again, in a scene that’s likely to become another fanboy favourite.

“I had to learn a bunch of dance sequences for it,” reveals Alba, adding that she needed three months training to prepare for the role. “I do a lot more dancing in this one. It was kind of crazy. It was very, very difficult, and you'll see why.”

Directed by Robert Rodriguez and co-starring Josh Brolin, Mickey Rourke and Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Sin City: A Dame To Kill For will open in the US on 4 October 2013.

I was definitely thinking that after the fake boobage in Machete 2, if they manage to get the motion right (it was basically a still in Machete), we may just see that...

Other than writing and "co-directing" this with Rodriquez, exactly how involved in the movie is Frank Miller? I've not heard a peep or a tweet or anything from the man since the movie started principal photography. I do wonder if Frank is only on set as a "script supervisor".

here's some Frank Miller involvement...

Quote
Apparently it’s not just the fans who lost faith in the Sin City sequel during the lengthy gap between the two films. Said star Jessica Alba in a recent interview:

I think like every six months to a year it was like “We’re going to do it, when’s the next one coming? Oh yeah, we’re going to do it. We’re going to do it. We’re going to do it.” And then at a certain point it was just like OK, I just didn’t believe it. It was like “We’re going to start in the summer, we’re going to start in the fall” but then when we actually got the start date and I was there on the set it was like a dream.

Like the last film, Sin City: A Dame to Kill For will feature several distinct but overlapping storylines. While some of the plot arcs were adapted from Frank Miller‘s graphic novels, Alba revealed that hers had been written just for the movie.

Well this is– mine is an original story so there wasn’t a lot to base it off of, but Frank has been drawing. So it’s just crazy. It was neat to see their process, Robert and Frank’s, and their collaboration and what they inspire from each other and get out of each other and what they’re creating. It’s really like the 2.0 version of Sin City and it’s pretty amazing.

Alba concluded, “It’s going to be rad.” Sin City: A Dame to Kill For opens October 2.

rad? did she really say that?
