IGN News : Star Wars 7 The Search for Directors Begins

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rQe7sbN-Ijw

I was curious if the new Trilogy would be completely separate from Episodes 5-7 with regards to characters. So, I'm glad to hear that the main characters are going to anchor the new films. I want to see the old cast come back. Old being the operative word. So, will I be seeing this in the theater? I may just have to lift my ban on going to theaters just for this.

This is very good news for me as I think this is an absolute must. You get Ford on board, and the rest will follow. Mark Hamil and Carrie Fisher would certainly follow his lead. This movie isn't coming out for another 2 years, plus change. This thread will get very big and there is plenty to talk about starting with casting. If they announce the cast soon, then we have a good idea of where the story will go. Kinda. If it's a cast of unknowns, than it's safe to say that the new Trilogy will have nothing to do with what came before.

I need to further expand on why I think that the original cast is a must for Episode VII. They need the new movie to be a transitional one to hand over the torch to whoever the new cast will be that will carry the franchise beyond this new Trilogy. It has to be done because if they just start it fresh with a bunch of faces we don't know, there will be such a huge backlash from the generation that made and kept the franchise alive. I guess you could say that Episode VII would be more about 'fan service' than anything else and you certainly don't want to  p i s s  off those that made this a valuable commodity for Disney to buy. With Episode VIII you can start to veer off with the new cast and having them make their own mark.

My 2 Cents.

Don't want the old cast in at all.  MAYBE we see an old (ie current) Luke in a hologram or something but he better start working out NOW cause old Luke should look like a wizened old warrior and not a suburban dad... I'm not saying there's anything WRONG with looking like a suburban dad, but this is a dude who was supposed to go around the universe spreading the word of Yoda and ****, he's been walking around a lot.

Personally, the way I'm picturing the movie is starting on Endor like a generation after Luke and Leia, the remnants of the Rebels who settled there.  It probably has to do with the fact I had seen Cloud Atlas RIGHT before the announcement was made, but I was thinking they're living like the villagers in the Post-Post-Future part of CA and these headhunter warlords start culling them in scrapped-together ships, this leads the protagonist off the planet and into the bigger, new Star Wars universe, where warlords in cobbled-together ships are spreading fear throughout.  For some reason, I had it in y head that somehow space travel had just STOPPED after Jedi and this was everyone finding their footing in the galaxy again.  The original trilogy had used future, this should be abused future, everything was made, then repurposed, then repurposed again, everything is falling apart and there's no new technology.

Chip had asked me about the TRS episode and what I think, I TOTALLY don't want to go to ANY of the planets from before once we take off from Endor.  I WOULD be okay with Coruscant if it was a dystopia with toppled-over buildings and total ****-hit-the-fan horribleness, but only briefly.

I am kind of keen to see  a new generation of droids, though... fully CG-created hyper-real rustbuckets.

I get that the new Star Wars should be rebooted, but not at the expense of just wiping out the original cast. You have to remember that the kids (myself) that grew up with Star Wars always had Luke, Leia and Han in Episodes 7,8 and 9 as the rumor went around school when talk of future films would be about.  For us, this was just a given that they would be included. And now that we are finally getting those Episodes, it's not as easy to kick them to the curb just because they are 'Old'. I just think that Disney will want to have their hands in both pockets (Old and New fans) and the only way to do this is to have Old and New cast in the same film. Besides, Harrison Ford wanted his character killed off at the end of Return Of The Jedi. He was vetoed by Lucas. If Harrison does in fact come back for another Star Wars film, I can almost guarantee you that he will meet his demise at the end of Episode VII and I think this too would end all of the Old Cast for just a one time only film before moving onward with the next gen cast.

I'm sure the fact that I didn't grow up with the characters is affecting my judgement, but honestly, I feel like they all got their happy ending at the end of Jedi so it feels like it would take that away if we saw them again.  Honestly, even if it was a case of Han Solo grumbling about something in ONE scene, I would be robbed of that.  What's in your head for those characters somehow seems like much more.  They passed into legend, you don't want to run into a legend on the street.

Hey, one thing that is a MAJOR positive about Episode VII....Hayden Christensen will have NOTHING to do with the next Star Wars film. Thank God! He is the sole reason why I soured on the franchise and George Lucas. The story itself sucked as well and it was nothing more than a 'connect the dots' Trilogy. Also, as much as I dig Natalie Portman, she has to shoulder a lot of the blame as well. Horrible acting by pretty much everyone involved.

As for running into Legends on the street. I've done just that with the members of KISS at random places over the years and it was AWESOME! So, bring on Luke, Leia and Han!! Wheeeeeeeeeee!!!!

"Hey, it's you, Luke Skywalker, right?  You took down the Empire, that was awesome.  Can you do the force thing?"
"Uh, not now, I gotta pick up my kids."
"Can you do the Joker voice?"

I guess it would be interesting if they did something batshit crazy with the actors like had Han Solo be an old drunk stoned king who was an empty shell of a man or you saw Chewbacca as a giant weird thick clumps of hair beast or Luke as an almost entirely cyborg puppet.

I remember what Carrie Fisher said about the dialogue in Star Wars: "George, you can write it but you can't say it."  All that stuff was hard to pull off.  No one could really "act" in those movies, and it's because they were doing lines and not allowed to act, experiment, or play.  They were props.  I HATE when actors are props.

And THAT's what makes George Lucas a HORRIBLE director. He is a great visionary and storyteller. But as a director he fails. "Faster and more intense" is the weakest and most vague stage direction you can give to an actor. What the f*ck does that mean George?

Agreed.  Plus all the stuff with actors in the prequels was shot with the same three or four angles. It was all wooden.

They said these movies are in 3D.  They better freaking SHOOT them in 3D!
