IGN News - Abrams and Kasdan Take Over Star Wars: Episode VII Screenplay

Having Lawrence Kasdan back on board makes me feel really good that this franchise can be saved.

Star Wars: Episode VII - Is More Han, Luke and Leia a Good or Bad Thing? - IGN Conversation

I had no idea that the original writer was veering off course. I'm glad Abrams stuck to his gun and dropped the original screenplay in favor of giving Luke, Han and Leia their cake before sending them off to be frozen in carbon. I like the idea of them adding a daughter or grand daughter to Ben Kenobi. I stopped reading the spin off books after Timothy Zahn's run, so I don't know if this is entirely new for the movie or if it has been established as canon already.

I feel like the only one that wants to see a new gang without ANY ties to the old trilogy?  And then, in the same way they were talking about a Boba Fett standalone, you could do a team-up movie with the new gang meeting and going on adventure with Luke, Han, and Leia... or at least confine them all to a single awesome movie, and not have that contaminate the new trilogy.  And maybe get some folks from the prequels, I hated the prequels but I wouldn't mind seeing Ewan MacGregor and Natalie Portman get a little scenework... that way you have an Avengers-style Star Wars movie that incorporates ALL THREE trilogies, and is its' own event, because really, after a new trilogy and standalone films, how else do you make a Star Wars movie a big deal?

Didn't you say that you came into the Star Wars Universe pretty late in the game? For the rest of us, we grew up on the original Trilogy as it came out and that's why we want those 3 actors back for one last hurrah. I just think that it means more to those that collected all the action figures, trading cards and saw all the movies during its initial release. Having them back in lead roles is really fan service for those die hard fans that kept the series alive and relevant for so long, especially during the dreadful second trilogy.

Yeah, I'm very late to the game... and I've really only seen the original trilogy a handful of times.  But I just think it's unfair for the new characters to have to compete with the old favourites.  They should get a chance for us to love them on their own (and god KNOWS that's gonna be an uphill battle if the last trilogy is any indication).  I wanna fall in love with them first and THEN see them team up with the original guys in a fun and interesting way.  And that way we get the messy set-up out of the way so we don't have to waste time with that, we can just start in on the fun right away.

They will get their chance. Episode VII is the only one that will focus on the classic characters. I want to point out why the prequel sucked (other than the scripts) is that there were no holdovers from the original. Sure, it's the same characters, but younger. It's still not the same as having the actors that brought life to those characters in the first place and that's why having them get their send off is the right way to go. There has to be a 'passing of the torch' to the kids. They can't just show up and carry the film, especially if the original actors are in VII and used only in cameos. It would feel very odd and actually draw attention to itself.

Are you kidding?  A big problem with the prequels was because there were WAY too many holdovers from the original trilogy: Tatooine, Palpatine, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Anakin Skywalker, Jango Fett, another princess, Yoda all over the place, ships that looked like the classic ships but without any personality to them, R2D2 and C3PO yukkin' it up all over the place, Stormtroopers runnin' around everywhere... it was connected WAY too much to the old trilogy, and it didn't do ANYTHING interesting with it (I will say that while I've only read a few issues, the Knights of the Old Republic did a SW prequel in a truly interesting fashion, taking what we knew and playing around with it).  By adhering to all these elements, they switched the feel from being "a ragtag group of renegades in a wide universe" to "everything in the universe centers around this group of d-bags."

And worse, d-bags that can't surprise us, they could have at LEAST put the characters in different roles.  Ob-Wan shouldn't have been the prequel's Obi-Wan, he should have been the prequel's Han Solo.  We know him as smart and wise, so why not show him reckless and full-of-himself and get his butt humbled over the course of the trilogy?  And how about instead of Padme being a bad-butt Queen, which we've already SEEN, why not actually have her BE the handmaiden, who gets Mean Girl sh*t from the rest of the official staff until she decides "f*ck this" and goes off on her own.  "Who wants to be a princess?"  Anakin... well, he has to be a Jedi, but... I don't know, once they said he built 3PO and that podracer, I kept thinking... why not have him be the tech guy?  He's not the MAIN Jedi, he can fight, but he's more of a planner and builder.  That way you can have a totally new protagonist that the audience doesn't know, that COULD die or could survive or... who knows?

We don't need Luke, Han, Leia, and Chewy.  We need a protagonist thrown into the deep end into a strange and exciting universe, going on this great quest with just the help of a few friends he makes along the way and by a growing education in a strange and mystical Force.  Everything else is just trappings.

This was kind of a no brainer given how old the original cast is.

Great news about Andy Serkis joining the cast. I just hope that have a live action role for him to play beyond the CGI Mo-Cap character(s) he is sure to bring life too. Also dig that Max Von Sydow is also a part of the Star Wars Universe now.
