Lawless tells the story of the infamous Bondurant brothers, a pair of bootlegging siblings running whiskey through Prohibition-era Virginia. All appears to be going well until Guy Pearce's vicious lawman rolls into town, and upsets the applecart with extreme prejudice.

The new trailer opens with the victim of a tarring and feathering and continues in that pitch-black vein throughout, with Tom Hardy stealing the show as immovable man-mountain Forrest Bondurant.

As Western trailers go, you can't say much fairer than that, can you? John Hillcoat knows his way around bruising action and spare, life-sapping landscapes, and it looks as though he's brought all that experience to bear on this dusty epic.

Co-starring Shia Labeouf, Jessica Chastain, Gary Oldman and Mia Wasikowska, Lawless opens in the UK on 7 September 2012. Yee-ha!
