August 17, 2012, director Tony Scott and Tom Cruise met to scout locations in Fallon, Nevada for the sequel which was set to go into production in 2013 and expected for release in 2014. Jerry Bruckheimer would again produce and Peter Craig was in charge of writing script which is said to be nearly finished. According to reports, the plot of the movie would focus on the role of drones in modern aerial warfare.

August 19, 2012, Scott was found dead after jumping 200 feet to his death from a bridge in California. It is currently unknown if the film will be made due to Scott's death.

In spite of Tony Scott's passing, I still think Top Gun 2 will happen. Not only do I think it will happen, I have a pretty strong gut feeling that Ridley Scott would step in to direct the film to honor his brother. I've not heard any rumors or read about this happening.
