I was introduced to Citizen Cope by an old girlfriend. She appreciated music and knew I did too. So on occasion she would ask me to listen to something I might not have heard before.

Citizen Cope is one of those artists. At first I didn't care too much about his work. When you listen to the music, his style is very different. I would call it minimalist. But after you listen to it, the structure is solid and has these amazing hooks. Citizen Copes music has been used countless times in television and movies. And the times I've picked up on, the music just appeared so seamless.

His influences range from blues, pop, reggae, hip-hop and several others I still try to identify. His influences have been great and other artist recognize his contributions.

In 2002, Carlos Santana requested Cope’s song, “Sideways,” for his Shaman album. Cope sang on the track and produced it as well. Shaman has sold over 5 million copies worldwide. Citizen Cope’s songs have been licensed to appear in numerous films, soundtracks and commercials. His work appears in a number of soundtracks to films including 2006’s Trust the Man (Julianne Moore, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Billy Crudup) and 2008’s Ghost Town (Ricky Gervais), 2006’s Accepted (Jonah Hill, Blake Lively), The Lincoln Lawyer (Matthew McConaughey), and Fracture (Anthony Hopkins). His “Bullet and a Target” appears in 2006’s The Sentinel (Michael Douglas, Kiefer Sutherland), Alpha Dog (Emile Hirsch) as well as in the show Cold Case. Cope’s songs have also been included in television shows Scrubs, multiple episodes of One Tree Hill, multiple episodes of Entourage, So You Think You Can Dance and on the soundtrack to the critically acclaimed television show Smallville. A new song, “One Lovely Day,” will appear in the upcoming film Battleship (Liam Neeson, Alexander Skarsgard), scheduled for release in May 2012.

I would say give Citizen Cope a listen to. Then again and again. It just may grow on you if you're first not liking it.

I am not familiar with his demo freshmen shot. I just may have to check this out. I have all his others' so why not his demo.

Citizen Cope

A selection of songs off Citizen Copes first real production project. Let the Drummer Kick is a slow but paced song with some very distinctive piano playing. A style that permeates his collection. The repetition ala hip-hop sound put me off at first. But as you listen it builds.

Salvation is yet another trademark style of slow, acoustic guitar centric simple playing. But again with hooks that get into your head like earworms.

This album is middle of the road for me. I like it, but the other later releases have much more powerful songs that I get into> I think you'll see the improvement in song writing.

The Clarence Greenwood Recordings

The previous album didn't do much for me. I like it, but don't listen to it much. The Clarence Greenwood (Citizen Copes real name) Recordings brings some solid memorable songs. Nite Becomes Day plods along. Yes... plods. It just has a slow chug to it. The classic minimalist sound. Keyboard, simple rhythm of drum and bass. Pablo Picasso follows up with about the same pace. Different singing style, but again very minimal. Son's Gonna Rise picks it up a bit. almost a rap in singing. It has a great hook that's easy to sing too. Sideways, slows way back down but I think is the best song off the album. Santana thought enough of it to redo it and add his signature sound. Not better, just good. Penitentiary goes back to the plodding style. I don't know why I like this, it's just got something in it. Hurricane Waters is the very first song I heard by Citizen Cope. A lot was going on for me at the time. So this brings back some smiles and means a lot to me. D'Artangan's Theme starts off slow like the others and slowly builds to a reasonable climax. Reminds me of sing alongs you might hear in a bar. Bullet and a Target adds some spice... finally. Another sing along type of song that sounds great riding around in a car. Fame goes back to the slow plodding style with a little build up.
