David Lee Roth (Skyscraper) 1988

Some great stuff on this, but as a whole, it could never quite reach the heights of Eat Em And Smile. It's funny that Dave left Van Halen over the idea that Eddie was adamant about making the new VH record (5150) more keyboard-heavy. And here we are 2 years later, and his biggest hit is "Just Like Paradise". Go figure. I love the song. It's one of my faves. Earworm for sure. "Perfect Timing" is another great song as well.

The song "Skyscraper" is very unusual with the audio pans left and right for the vocals. But Steve's playing is pure vintage "Flexible" stuff. "Damn Good" is a great song, which back then, felt like his attempt at a "Wanted Dead Or Alive" song. Nowhere near as great as that, but still a winner in my book. This review gets a half star less rating than it did a year ago. I just miss that harder edge of Eat Em And Smile. Still some great songs here though.

Fave Songs: Just Like Paradise, Skyscraper, Damn Good and Perfect Timing. Album cover is meh. It ties in with the name thematically, but it's still a boring cover. Get creative dude! Why not have Diamond Dave scaling the Empire State Building, ala King Kong?

Billy Sheehan leaves the band shortly before the Skyscraper Tour starts. Steve Vai quits later at the end of the tour to join Whitesnake. Gregg Bissonette eventually follows suit. So, Diamond Dave went from having a Supergroup...to needing a group hug. Poor little guy. At least he never had to restort to hosting a radio show to make ends meet.
