Early Beatles letter seeking drummer sells for $55,000

Quote
LONDON — A handwritten letter written by Paul McCartney on Aug. 12, 1960 inviting an unnamed drummer to audition for a place in the Beatles has sold at Christie's for 34,850 pounds ($55,000 US).

The document was discovered folded up in a book purchased at a car boot sale in Liverpool, birthplace of the Fab Four.

It had been expected to fetch 7-9,000 pounds at a rock and pop memorabilia sale at Christie's in London late on Tuesday.
Story: Early Paul McCartney letter offers drummer tryout

Shortly after the letter was written, the newly-formed Beatles traveled to Hamburg, Germany, to play a series of gigs as they set out on the road to superstardom.

According to online Beatles timelines, drummer Pete Best joined the Beatles on Aug. 12. He was thrown out of the band two years later and replaced by Ringo Starr.

The auctioneer said the letter was one of the earliest examples of the band being referred to as the Beatles.
Story: 'Mad Men' creator wants modern ending for show

It was also important to pop historians because it suggested McCartney was seeking an alternative to Best until the last minute and knew more about the details of the Hamburg trip than previously thought.

The top lot of the sale, fetching 97,250 pounds, was a hand-written sign reading "BED PEACE" displayed during one of John Lennon and Yoko Ono's famous "bed-ins" for peace in 1969.

I don't know who Rick Mercer is, but he's sitting in for just about every drummer and air drummer's wet dream. Getting lessons and playing with Neil Peart. This is the most I've heard Neil ever talk.

That was cool. But I had no idea he traveled by motorcycle. Friends and family members are sure not to approve of this. Too many variables out on the open road and all he has to protect himself is a helmet.

Hmmmm, I thought I mentioned this before. Neil Peart lives with his motorcycle practically. I've read all his books which are fascinating. One in particular due to the similar situation he went through with his wife and daughter. He does an excellent job of writing to keep things interesting. Believe me, it's not much about drumming. It's about his cross country adventures and music. The Africa one is on bicycle... not motorcycle. It's more interesting than it sounds.

I recommend each one these...

Ghost Rider: Travels on the Healing Road

Roadshow: Landscape With Drums: A Concert Tour by Motorcycle

Traveling Music: Playing Back the Soundtrack to My Life and Times

The Masked Rider: Cycling in West Africa

The Roadshow one does focus more on one of the tours and talks about behind the scenes stuff. Most of it is more on characters and people.

How about throwing up a couple of book reviews on these books over in the Book thread? Would love to get your insights on them.

I will. I need to break them out again. It's been awhile since I've read them. Ghost Rider I most likely will re-read several times.

Maybe this is the drumming of the future, but then people thought drum machines would be too. With the current crop of crap music that comes out, most people wouldn’t know some dude is tapping his finger on a pad. Good grief.

This really should have been a great demo from the makers of the app and docking station, to show off the potential. Much like this guy demoing the product

What was with that guys hair anyway. That was not a good look.

Brian Tichy (Speed Bagging to Queen's Crazy Little Thing Called Love)

Having just watched Brian Tishy on That Metal Show (Season 10), it was long overdue to spotlight him in the Drum Gods Thread. He is just so damn awesome and creative. Head over to watch his episode where he unveiled the Speed Bag into his Drumming set for the first time. It's awesome!!

Quote

This is the first known inclusion of a speed bag by a professional drummer as a rhythm instrument in a major public appearance, and should be noted as an important date in speed bag history
