FIRST spins finally
« on: January 05, 2018, 08:47:51 am »
Thought I'd start a new thread (this might be my first here actually!) but I thought I'd do a full reboot of all things around me
to celebrate the new year.

what I mean is:

Take a fresh look at everything and instead of just thinking I like this or I don't like that based on old opinions I may have come to or
assumptions I made years back (as you go through life and define yourself...."this is my favorite, this or that")

I thought I'd look at everything in my life with FRESH eyes...I mean everything.  and make NEW opinions
and redefine myself!

Music being a huge part of my life and something I seem to use almost as sustenance....it seemed like a great place to start/

so what I am up to is this.  I am going to pick 1 album a day and listen to it for the first time...it might be a rock band or rap band...it could be a pop
album or soundtrack, EDM. ...I honestly don't know.  The point is.  I love music but have picked some pretty specific lanes...I'd not consider myself close minded
with music at all...but there's so much out there...why not try new things, make some new opinions, and not just have default ideas based on maybe decades old
moments where I went "this isn't for me"

first spin is this.  I've never heard this album and have NO idea why I even picked this...but I'll come back and give me thoughts once I am done...and if anyone else wants to do their
own version of this...please post the album you'd like to choose and then post your thoughts.

It's obvious why you picked this album....those Chicks on the cover are calling to you.

Really curious to hear what you have to say about this record. It's weird that you're gonna listen to something I picked up shortly after 'Talk Dirty to Me' dropped on MTV and was in heavy rotation.

Awesome idea for a new thread.

ok so listened all the way through.  I have to say YOUTUBE is never the best way to listen to music...it's very convenient but sound quality-wise even with great speakers...depending on the upload
stuff can be very compressed, fizzy, or full of top end that sort of creates listeners "fatigue" because of the overall tone of the upload itself.

ok all that said.

It's a really good album...3 songs in I was thinking...wow I wonder if I will know every song on this thing (I didn't) this record screams to be played LOUD.  I don't often say that but
you throw this on at a party cranked...it's going to be a good time.  Overall it had some interesting moments...sounds funny but at times it reminded me a bit of the Stray Cats
simple rock songs, that were catchy...easy to digest, and some were rockers, and some were more ballads.  CC had at times almost an EVH tone going on (Sammy era) and Brett can
actually sing pretty well.

all in all I liked the record...the version I listened to had 3 or 4 extra tracks and although most were already on the record...they have a cover of Bad Bad Leroy Brown
which really was fun and made the full experience really cool.

Best way to listen to this would be vinyl or CD and played loud...I think that's really where it's at.  Good stuff...I'd give it a 3.3 out of 5.

Poison - I Won't Forget

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BJJ_HJ-9JNM

I thought the album was great back in the day, but personally I don't think it has aged well. But that can be said about a lot of Glam Metal bands and isn't really an indictment of Poison. With that said, there are still a couple of songs that I still like from the album to this day: Talk Dirty To Me, I Won't Forget You and Cry Tough. Cry Tough in particular i loved blasting on my car stereo when driving around just because the Drum Intro sounded awesome. If you've never seen the video for I Won't Forget You, check it out, there is a nice surprise waiting for ya. See if you can spot what I'm referring to.

weird choice...but I've heard this is a great album from a friend who I truly respect his musical tastes (my friend who played guitar in UFO, with Glenn Hughes, and is now the guitarist of Train)

but he always said this record was amazing....so I will see

Never really paid much attention to The Knack, so obviously never sought anything of theirs. Honestly, I always thought them to be a One-Hit Wonder with My Sharona. But to be fair, MTV , VH1 and everyone else that does Countdown Lists always portray them as such.

ended up listening to a Buckethead thing....will hop back on the album in a bit.

3 tracks in.  I've only liked 1 so far, but that song is actually very good.

I prefer Cheap Trick (meaning deep cuts not the big hits) more than The Knack so far...but I will reserve judgement until I finish this record.

But they have some similarities.

ok 6 songs in now...this record is actually quite good.  I am writing my thoughts as I listen so I don't forget....damn this song is awesome/

a surprise song I knew was "she's so selfish" great great track....the song right after called "Maybe Tonight" is excellent too (wow ok..."Good Girl's Don't" I know this track too).....you will get small vibes of bands like The Cars
Cheap Trick, The Beatles with these guys for sure....

very interesting too...if you've ever heard the side project Dean Deleo and his brother Robert did when Scott Weiland first went into rehab called "Talk Show" they sound HEAVILY influenced by this record.

Gotta say..this started off lukewarm for me....but is actually a very very good late 70's pop rock album.  I'd say this hangs comfortably with Cheap Trick's best full studio albums (not greatest hits aka 'Live at Budokan') although they might not have the "banner" songs C/T did
spread out through their catalog This Knack album is right up there with that or say a Cars album from the same era...generally 3-5 killer tunes and then sort of "the others"...this so far has 5-6 really great songs and 2 or 3 "others"

some great spins

very cool record...in the comments thread for the full record you can see a lot of the things I mentioned in my above post....so I feel like
my thoughts and comments were pretty solid.

a few other similar things you might hear (and I will reiterate The Beatles) but a bit of the Police at times, which is probably just a coincidence and then a tiny touch of Queen.

I actually knew I think 7 of the 12 tracks...really interesting and a very solid record.  I'd give it a 3.6 out of 5 stars.

I'd for sure go back and listen to this and I think probably even start to like it a bit more.

Look at me go!

Billy Squier Tale of the Tape (his solo debut)

When listening to the Knack there was one guitar bit that reminded me a little of later Led Zeppelin (aka some later Jimmy Page tone) and it made me think of the man Billy Squier who I always felt at least early on had a major late
era Zeppelin sound to some of his deeper tracks...figured I'd start it off with his first solo album.  Apparently he was the singer of a band called "Piper" so I will be looking into that.

this is a fun listen honestly...he's got the full playlist on his official youtube channel...4 of the songs I actually saved and will create a fun playlist of my favorite tracks from these "first spins."
As much as I liked the Poison record as a for instance...I'd not go back and listen to any single songs...I'd be more apt to just listen to the full thing.

This album actually has had some of my favorite songs from all 3 records I've spun the last few days...but overall I think the other songs although good...are not exceptional so it lowers my rating for the full record
to a 2.7 out of 5 stars...these tracks below are super cool though and I enjoyed them all enough to actually save them...

one thing of note on The Knack album and this one...there is depth that the Poison album lacked (not meaning that as obviously as it sounds) all these records are commerical but these other records you can really see how on multiple listens
you'd get more and more out of the record...which to me is what old school vinyl collecting and that era of songwriting was about...the full record was immersive (even if the songs were pop/ or rock and could easily be singles...) which honestly although both Billy Squier and the Knack album
are rock albums...they feel substantial and like you could go back and get more and more out of the arrangements and the melodies...and they feel sometimes like they'd take a few listens to warm up to...Cheap Trick are masters of that on their deep cuts/

next up I am going to do an Alice Cooper record...I've never listened to one

:)

I have to say also..this has been incredibly enriching and I feel like I've actually grown as a music fan doing this...and we're only 3 records in...so this is very fun.  Trust me I am not just doing oldies...I have a long list of contemporary bands I am going to dig through also
and all genres.

1971 Alice Cooper Killer.

surprisingly (or not)...produced by Mister Bob Ezrin

I didn't want to go back to 1969 and figured this would be a decent place to start...but totally a random pick.

I like these old school bands are putting up full records (as playlists) on their official pages...it makes me want to support my favorite spins and buy them!

I'll be back for a review in a bit...first track was great.

I've never listened to either of those albums. I'm compelled to do so. As for lack of depth on Poison's Look At What The Cat Dragged In, that's one of the main criticisms I have with Glam Metal in general and the main thing that has kept most...if not all, from aging well over the years.

You're off to a great start with your album choices. Now time for you to hit up N.W.A.'s Straight Outta Compton if you're really going to step outside your comfort zone.

yeah for sure.  Like I said...Monday when the "family unit" is out of the house...I can get a little more crazy with things.

I have to keep it kid friendly to some extent on the weekends.

I will come back in a bit and review the Alice Cooper Killer record.

and I think I know what I am going to listen to this morning...so things are already off to a musical start...and like I said.
I've found this process liberating in a way and it is giving me a lot of energy and like a wider perspective on my creativity and imagination.

so it's already been a worthwhile process.

OK Alice Cooper KILLER.  This really sounds like a coming of age album for Alice...I don't know why but you just get the feeling he's assimilating all his influences and creating his own
identity all at the same time...His songs while sounding fresh and original also give echoes of the beach boys (you read that right) the beatles, jethro tull and a lot of the prog stuff coming out at that time...I hear David Bowie
but in the end it's 100% Alice and it's all coming together with the help of master Bob Ezrin...this album is really great.  It's like the end of the hippie movement and going into something with more
depth and sustenance.  It's ballsy and brash almost in a NY punk way too...but he brings the big show as you'd expect with Alice...and you can hear maybe even the influence of the Stones or like....how this record might have influenced Meatloaf or the movie Rocky Horror Picture show.

I'd give it a solid 4 out of 5 stars...maybe even a 4.1 (gotta save room for the "top")  a few tracks maybe dip lower but overall I think a 4 is a very fair score.

:)

excellent and a really fun listen that immediately draws you back in and wanting to travel deeper into this catchy and fun horror infused album.

put this on your to do list.

you can find the full playlist for this record here (as well as others from Alice's official page) at this link...enjoy, this is a hidden gem for sure.
I love this record and I can see it growing and really getting into my DNA.  Ezrin really is a genius and this early work shows what he can do with talent.
