Hole (Pretty On The Inside) 1991

Singles

Pretty On The Inside is the definition of a raw album that seems to be one giant clusterf*ck. It's clear that the band was more or less just trying to write and put something down on tape. Even with the wall of sound which is the best way I can describe it, there are a couple of good songs here. I recently listened to POTI a few months ago after a long hiatus. And to me it seemed fresh and original coming back to it and so I gave it a 4-5 star rating I believe. But this time around, all the faults have once again surfaced and certainly does not merit such a generous rating.

Hole as a band has had a revolving door of bandmates throughout it's career. The lineup here is anchored by Courtney Love (Vocals, Rhythm Guitars), Eric Erlandson (Lead Guitar), Jill Emery (Bass) and Caroline Rue (Drums).

Fave Songs: Teenage Wh*re and Babydoll

Album cover is what it is....a clusterf*ck. All over the place.

Hole (Live Through This) 1994

Singles

Rolling Stones 500 Greatest Albums Of All Time
Live Through This
at #466

Live Through This was released a mere 4 days after Kurt Kobain's suicide. This is regarded as Hole's masterpiece. It's that good. But I've always been torn between this one and Celebrity Skin as being the best. The album is so good that even Rolling Stone named it the best album of 1994, as well as later awarding it a spot on their list of The 500 Greatest Albums of All Time, and rightly so.

As mentioned before, the lineup is always changing. Only 2 (Courtney Love and Eric Erlandson) remain from Pretty On The Inside. Taking over on Bass is Kristen Pfaff, who would later OD. And on Drums is Patty Schemel.

Overall, Live Through This is a much stronger album and more polished (while keeping it's edge) than that of their previous effort. The music style is more along the lines of Grunge/Alternative. The songs are full of hooks and melodies that easily made them radio friendly. I highly recommend this to anyone that is a fan of music. Even if you absolutely hate Courtney for whatever reason, you owe it to yourself to at least check it out and not just write it off because of all the tabloid fodder that has followed her wherever she goes.

Fave Songs: Violet, Miss World, Plump, Asking For It, Doll Parts, Credit In The Straight World and I Think That I Would Die

The album cover is an instant classic. Easily identifiable as a Hole album. And for the back cover, that's a young Courtney Love.

Hole (Celebrity Skin) 1998

Singles

Listening again to Celebrity Skin, it's without a doubt my favorite Hole album and the best of the bunch. It's even more polished than that of Live Through This. Some would argue that it's also their "sell out" album in that it was written with radio in mind. Yes, it's got plenty of radio worthy singles. But I certainly wouldn't fault them because of this. I absolutely recommend Celebrity Skin. Check it out. You will not be disappointed.

Once again, Courtney Love and Eric Erlandson are the only returning band members on Celebrity Skin. Patty Schemel, the drummer on the last record did help write the songs here. But she left before recording began. The drum vacancy was filled in by Samantha Maloney (Motley Crue) in an uncredited capacity. Because Patty co-wrote the bulk of the album, she was given credit as writer and "current" Hole member. And new to the band on Bass was Melissa Auf der Maur. Billy Corgan (The Smashing Pumpkins) plays Bass on Hit So Hard in an uncredited role.

Fave Songs: All of 'em. But there are so many great songs here that it's really hard to pick a fave. So, I'll go with definite MVP worthy songs, which include Hit So Hard, Reasons To Be Beautiful and Use Once & Destroy. <--- Earworm. Listen to it once and your hooked. So fuuucking good.

Album cover is meh.

Hole (Nobody's Daughter) 2010

Singles

Nobody's Daughter is Hole's first album in 12 years. But it's only a Hole album in name only. Courtney Love is the only returning member from any versions of the band. After her disastrous solo album, my guess is that rather than trying to rebrand herself, it was better to fall back into a brand name that already worked for her...Hole. The biggest MIA here is that of Erik Friedlander, who co-formed Hole along with Courtney. So when she decided to resurrect the band without his involvement, it got ugly with lawsuits, etc....

Now that that's out of the way, I will rate on what the album is regardless of what the band name says or not. It's either a good album or a sh*tty one. And that goes for anything I listen to. As for Nobody's Daughter...it doesn't suck. But it's nowhere near that of the past 2 albums. It suffers from an uneven track list and a couple of songs should have been dropped all together. Stylistically it harkens back to it's alternative roots. It's not as pop-centric as Celebrity Skin.

Courtney Love will reunite Hole’s classic lineup in 2015

I never, ever thought in a million years that Courtney would reunite the classic line-up. NEVER! So many things are going to go wrong. I can feel it. I hope I am wrong, because I want to see this work.
