KISS (Carnival Of Souls - The Final Sessions) 1997

Carnival Of Souls was actually recorded in 1995 before the MTV Unplugged taping. But with the huge response for the original members performing, they went forth with the Reunion Tour, which meant that Eric Singer and Bruce Kulick were out of the band. Actually, both were paid a nice care package to step aside for the tour, but that they were still members of KISS.

So, with the Tour in full swing, Souls was put on the shelf indefinitely. It was only when the album itself was leaked and was circulating in mass quantities as a bootleg that they decided to give the album a proper release. The addendum of Final Sessions was just to clarify that this was basically it for the current KISS lineup as Gene, Paul, Ace and Peter were of the mindset that the original was it till the end. Ahhhhhhh....right.

As for Souls, it's definitely a different KISS as it stuck with what worked with Revenge but added elements of Grunge, as they always do when jumping on whatever music bandwagon is in vogue of the day.

Bruce Kulick, after being the longest tenured guitarist for the band, finally gets to sing lead vocals for I Walk Alone. Ironically, this would be the last appearance for Bruce Kulick as a member of KISS. The irony isn't lost on me that the same thing happened with Eric Carr for Hot In The Shade. Bruce plays some wicked guitar leads all over this album. At least he went out on his own terms here.

This is only the 3rd time I have even listened to this album. I hated it the first 2 times I listened to it back in '97 and I think the reason for that is because I was back on the "original KISS" train and this was so un-KISS-like. But right now, with so much distance from the last time I gave it a spin, I'm actually really digging it. It's much better than I originally gave it credit for.

Fave Songs: In My Head, Seduction Of The Innocent and I Walk Alone. The album cover pretty much tells you everything you need to know. In that this was a rush job and no thought was given to the cover other than to highlite the former members of KISS, since Ace and Peter were back in the band and in full makeup at that time.

No music videos were produced for Carnival Of Souls. All you get is a behind the scenes recording session.

KISS (Sonic Boom) 2009

After 3 huge world tours (Reunion, Psycho Circus and the Farewell Tour), both Peter and Ace exit the band. I knew it wasn't meant to last. It would have been nice if KISS as a whole would have called it quits as the original foursome. Oh well....

Gene and Paul wanted to keep the band going, so they go back to Eric Singer and ask him if he would be willing to play the role of "Peter Criss" in full makeup and costume. He of course said yes. They also approached Bruce Kulick about playing the role of "Ace Frehley" as well. He said no. His words were that for the entire duration of his career with the band, he had always been living in his shadow. So dressing up as him would be a disservice to him as well as Ace. I have more respect for Bruce for stepping aside than I do with anyone else in the band. Props to you dude!  He has soldiered on with solos projects as well as joining Grand Funk Railroad.

Stepping into the role of "Ace" is Tommy Thayer, formerly of Black N Blue, who has been working as the bands Film Editor, Director and all around band gopher up till getting the job as the new guitarist. Right place, right time, lands him his ultimate gig. As a side project he was also involved in a KISS tribute band along with former lead singer for Black N Blue's own Jaime St. James. Small world.

Sonic Boom is a 3 Disc package (Sonic Boom, Klassics, KISS Live In Buenos Aires Concert DVD).

Sonic Boom is much better than I could have hoped for. I had zero expectations for it. So, getting to listen to it thru a few times it really is going back to that Classic KISS sound of the 70's, which is a nice surprised. When I first heard about Sonic Boom, I was convinced it was going to fall along the lines of Psycho Circus, which is complete garbage. I haven't listened to that one since it came out, so I'll need to give it a once over to see if it still sucks.

Personal faves on Sonic Boom: Modern Day Delilah, Stand, When Lightning Strikes, and Say Yeah!

Right now I'd have to go with Stand as my favorite. The better songs on the album are from Paul. The ones with Gene are just ok on some, and slightly better on others. I'll have to digest it more to see if I can warm up to it. Sonic Boom really is a throw back to vintage KISS. It really does fit within the history of the band quite well. And with some distance from the last time I listened to it, I can recommend this one to anyone. The more I listen to it, I can definitely see the rating going up. But for the time being, 4 stars is good enough.

Rock And Roll Over

Album Cover. What is this piece of sh*t? I can't believe the same guy that designed the cover to Rock And Roll Over, is the same person (Michael Doret) that did Sonic Boom. Talk about someone turning into a hack and producing utter crap. Worst album ever for this band. I for one can not understand how Gene, who has final say so in all things KISS related, agreed to release this cover. Ugh!!

KISS (Jigoku-Retsuden - Aka KISS Klassics) 2009

Klassic is exactly what I expected. Blasphemy!  I tried to keep an open mind, and ear with this one. But dude, you just don't mess with the originals! On top of that, all the songs have a much slower pace. Why? I have no idea. I just don't understand the need to re-record classic KISS songs with Eric Singer and Tommy Thayer. What's the point?

Only song even worth anything on this one is "Do You Love Me", which seems to actually add something new and different to it. Still prefer the original though.

I'm being very generous with the 1 star rating. It just sucks that I have to listen to KISS Klassics as my final KISS album for these reviews. To say it goes out on a whimper is an understatement. The album cover sucks. What the f*ck is it? I dunno. All I know is that the album was originally released in Japan, so naturally it's going to incorporate the culture into the album itself. Still sucks though.

The End...for the time being anyways.

Hmmmmm. I gotta give Gene and Paul credit where credit is due. I think even they knew that a Volume 4 set featuring just stuff with Eric Singer and Tommy Thayer would not sell as well. So, what they have done is gone back to the vault from all incarnations of the band to give it a good variety of material to satisfy those long time KISS fans. Ahem. Still remains to be seen what the bonus disk will be at Amazon, Best Buy and Walmart. Not sure about Target getting one yet. To be released late November, just in time for Xmas.

Gene, Paul, Eric and Bruce Interview (French TV - 1990)

This is awesome stuff from 1990 during the Hot In The Shade Tour with the band joking around and ad-libbing through Beatles songs among other things. I've never seen this clip before so it's definitely a good find for me.

I'm getting it for sure. My holy grail that I need and want in my collection is a full Animalize concert with Mark St. John on guitar, a full Lick It Up Tour concert, a full Creatures Of The Night Tour concert on the American leg and a full concert of the Asylum Tour. They all exist as Gene has been quoted numerous times that they have been taping every single show since the Winterland concert.

I actually love The Donna's version of Strutter. I use to listen to this one a lot when it came out.
