I was thinking that when I wrote it...not Lars but how "blank tapes and making copies" would somehow effect the record companies.

greed is what ****ed them.  They lied to the public and basically said..."look CD's are only going to be MORE expensive for a little while...they are actually cheaper to make than records"  (which they are) That was their exact words.....and then they proceeded to charge twice as much for them...and even took it as far as charging $16 bucks...$18 and MORE....so all of a sudden you have records that used to cost 7-9 bucks costing 16.....then 18 and up and up...it was a joke and they never did lower the prices.......they all got rich and people finally said **** YOU this is a rip off...albums should be like $10...or we can just get them free.  I am not saying that's right...but look at any riot that happens..you push people far enough...eventually it's going to snap back in your face....they go crazy and just start grabbing anything and everything...it's not about what they really want....they just go nuts and take anything and everything not bolted down.

if they want to play nice which they don't they could probably even this out.

instead they now charge $75 for a double album on vinyl....concert tickets are through the roof, band shirts are like $45-60...with things like hoodies being something like $100/

so they didn't change at all...they took a HUGE hit.    But the greed is still there and they are trying desperately to get back to raking in the cash.

I don't see it happening.

the musicians suffer but you know...the labels did this....they can try and blame the public.  It was their fault.

I bought all those cd's there and that's where I saw the Stones when they released their full catalog on CD's...I'd go back in forth around the rows (remember they were basically the length of the store...so you'd go waaaaaaay back to the far wall of the shop and then have to turn around to come back down)...debating what I was going to buy because I usually only had enough money for maybe 1 album two tops...so the choice was always torture!

but they absolutely had CD's there....it would have been between 1982-1984.

they even had a Black Sabbath greatest hits record on CD there I'd never seen on vinyl...it had a Bosch painting on the cover.

here's a link to the cover...I remember being in shock when I saw it because one it was on CD and two I'd never even seen the album before.  I didn't get it because I had all the songs already on LP...but the cover was extremely tempting

What they were charging when CD's first came on the scene was the reason why I resisted it for so f ucking long. I was still buying tapes because that was the "cheapest" format left at around 8 bucks brand new. As I mention earlier in this thread, when Tower Records did the midnight opening for Use Your Illusions 1 and 2, I went with cassettes instead of the CD's because they were way too expensive for my taste.

The music industry STILL doesn't get it and are overcharging on everything. Mac brought up the fact that Sony jacked the price up on Whitney Houston's box set a mere 12 hours after she died. Now THAT'S f ucked up. I can't find the link. I thought it was in the Whitney Houston thread. Mac, where is it?

I keep clicking on it and getting a page that says 'Forbidden'. Not sure what's going on.

maybe you have a firewall or something up...that prevents you from going there.

I always check my links right after I post them...so I'd checked it before I even saw your post and it worked....then I read it didn't work for you...and tried it again and it worked fine.

so I can't really say what the issue is.

I've been to that tower in LA a few times....last time I went would have been back around 1988 or so...I am pretty sure it's long gone.

Fun fact, in Slash's book, he had some cool and funny stories to talk about regarding the Tower Records on Sunset Blvd; stories about his time shoplifting and then as an employee there. Good stuff to read.

nice will have to check it out.

would be interesting to know what years he worked there.....I wonder if I ever stopped in when he was working.  I doubt it....my guess is he was working there probably in 1984 or around then.

Not sure if he dropped an exact date of his employment there.

You guys might have had Peaches Records and Tapes. Nothing really exceptional except for the huge reproduction art pieces of album covers.

Just rows and rows of product in a rather clinically clean huge warehouse.

I knew the name Peaches Records from somewhere, but I can't say that it existed here. Maybe it was a downtown shop, but it certainly wasn't in town, that's for sure.
