We all know the biggest hits from this album, whether you like
Madonna or not. It was unavoidable.
Madonna owned it in 1989 from
MTV to her
Pepsi commercial to all the controversy surrounding her, she couldn't be avoided. And I think this was the main reason why I never bought into her hype, even though I was a fan of a few of her songs by then. It was just too much. I've always been resistant to popular trends dictated by society and if everyone wants something, I want no association with it. So,
Madonna was huge then which meant that I couldn't get away from her fast enough. The only song I really liked at the time was
Cherish, which had a pretty cool melody and I loved the way her voiced sounded. It was refreshing because it didn't sound like a dance track. It wasn't.
Eventually I did get into
Madonna (that's what I said
) later in her career and bought her earlier stuff. Listening to
Like A Prayer then and now, I still come away pretty damn impressed with what's on the album. Like I said, you know all the big hits, but those aren't the best. After
Like A Prayer which is the perfect opener. I'm a big fan of Gospel and the song does a fantastic job of marrying dance and Gospel into a perfect song. After that there is
Express Yourself which is just as cool, it goes into
Love Song, a duet with
Prince and it f u c k i n g kicks ass and is hands down the best song here. It's definitely typical of a
Prince production, but damn the groove that lays itself out is so addicting. Even those that are devoid of any rhythm can swing with this one with ease.
There are a couple of true dance tracks on here, but the rest is actually
Madonna going out of her comfort zone and creating some really cool songs to showcase her singing range, especially with
Promise To Try, Oh Father and
Spanish Eyes. Some great Piano and acoustic arrangements here. If there is a weird song to be found here, it would be
Act Of Contrition and I still like it, because it's different and outside the box.
Dear Jessie sounds like a song that
No Doubt would do and it's probably why I'm a big fan of the song.
Fave Songs:
Like A Prayer, Express Yourself, Love Song, Promise To Try, Cherish, Dear Jessie, Oh Father and
Spanish Eyes.
I like the Album cover, but I never knew if that was in fact
Madonna's stomach. Still a cool cover regardless if it is or not.
