I found an album on Amazon, but it’s only mp3. No physical disc.
Can I download that album and burn it to CD for safe keeping?

How is iTunes songs different or better/worse perhaps?

Once you pay for it, it's yours to do with it, however you want to. So, yeah, I would say you can burn it. I would.
