Mötley Crüe (Too Fast For Love) 1981

Inner Sleeve

Too Fast For Love is the debut from Mötley Crüe, the original bad boys of LA, who without question were the leaders of new Glam / Hair Metal scene. The album has held up rather well over the years. It's rough around the edges on a couple of the songs, but as a whole it's a very solid and well balanced hard rock album. It's hard for me to use the term "Heavy Metal" now because the genre has evolved so much that to me what we have left here now is Hard Rock to my ears, even though back in the day it was definitely the epitome of Metal.

Like most people, I got my introduction these guys with Shout Out The Devil. If I remember correctly, I don't think I even got around to picking this one up till after Theather Of Pain. So back then it was a very jarring experience coming from the more refined metal record of Devil and then the more polished Pain. I did remember seeing the video for Live Wire during the Shout At The Devil days and criticizing them for being a poor knockoff of KISS.

Tommy Lee sure does like his cowbell.  Mick Mars has some pretty cool riffs all over this album.

Fave Songs: Livewire, Public Enemy #1, Take Me To The Top, Starry Eyes, Too Fast For Live and On With The Show. Too Fast For Love gets the MVP award here.

The album cover is a homage to that of The Rolling Stones own Sticky Fingers cover. So...props.

Mötley Crüe (Shout At The Devil) 1983

Original Banned Cover

Inner Sleeve (Side A & B)

Shout At The Devil was my introduction to Mötley Crüe. A friend of mine was a huge fan and had posters, buttons and of course the audio cassette. She let me check it out and I thought this was the scariest, most dangerous band out there. Nikki Sixx just looked like one scary dude. I ended up buying my own copy on cassette and my Mom did whatever she could to persuade me to throw it away. She really thought they were devil worshipers and I would be influence in a bad way. I had to explain to her that they fell in line with KISS and that it was all for show. She relented eventually given the fact that I wasn't a bad seed after worshiping KISS.

As for this album, it holds up extremely well. This is the album I think of when any discussion about Hair Metal is brought up. The album opens up with a cool little intro called In The Beginning that segues right into Shout At The Devil. But it doesn't really kick into high gear until Looks That Kill. This song still kicks major ass. As great as this song is, the MVP goes to Too Young To Fall In Love. The riff that Mick Mars came up with is deviously cool and one that I use to play on guitar all the time. Love it.

The 2003 Remastered Edition comes with demos for Shout at the Devil, Looks That Kill, Hotter Than Hell, Too Young to Fall in Love and the unreleased I Will Survive. The album as a whole is good, not perfect. It does suffer from a couple of fillers that knocks the rating down.

Fave Songs: Shout At The Devil, Looks That Kill, Helter Skelter, Too Young To Fall In Love and Danger.

For obvious reasons, they had to drop the original cover. I mean, did they really think they could pass that off to mainstream shops and not court controversy? The version of the cover they ended up settling on works and is a classic in my eyes. But I did always think that this album had 2 back covers with the 4 boxes in the front with each member.

Disclaimer:
I in no way endorse satanic rituals, worshiping or sacrifices in any way. I turned out pretty good after all.

Mötley Crüe (Theatre Of Pain) 1985

Inner Sleeve

Theatre Of Pain is the follow up to Shout At The Devil and comes on the heels of Vince Neil's DUI arrest for manslaughter, stemming from a car accident that resulted in the death of Hanoi Rocks drummer Nicholas "Razzle" Dingley.

I bought Pain based solely on Smoking In The Boys Room, in spite of it being a different sounding Crüe, i.e. more "polished" which is a nice way of saying Glam. Overall the album is good but doesn't quite reach the level of SATD. It's because of the different style of playing that I hardly seem to play this anymore. It lacks that killer agressive sound established earlier. Having said that, it does have the honor of having the greatest power ballad of all time: Home Sweet Home. There have been a lot of power ballads over the years to challenge Home for the best, but they all fail in the end. I know that every single person here and around the world actually "sings" the guitar solo from Home Sweet Home. Don't even try to pretend you don't.

Fave Songs: Smoking In The Boys Room, Home Sweet Home, Tonight (We Need A Lover) and Fight For Your Rights

The 2003 Remastered Edition comes with demos and outtakes for Home Sweet Home, Smokin' in the Boys' Room, City Boy Blues, Home Sweet Home (Instrumental Rough Mix), Keep Your Eye on the Money and Tommy's Drum Piece from Cherokee Studios

The album cover was iconic then and still is now.

Mötley Crüe (Girls, Girls, Girls) 1987

Inner Sleeve

Girls, Girls, Girls is an improvement over Theatre Of Pain and kicks it off in style with the best track on the record: Wild Side. Probably one of the best "drum" songs ever with the chugging rhythm section throughout to keep it moving along. Sadly, after this, the rest of the album kind of goes downward a notch. Solid record, but nowhere near that of Shout At The Devil when it comes to pure raw, aggressive Metal.

Still plenty of good songs. But they don't quite keep up with the opening track. It has it's high points with Wild Side, Girls, Girls, Girls, All In The Name Of... and You're All I Need. But the rest of the album is filled with at best, average tracks. Nona is too short to be considered a song, but it's still worth a listen. The album concludes with a live cover version of Elvis Presley's Jailhouse Rock.

Fave Songs: Wild Side, Girls, Girls, Girls, Nona, All In The Name Of... and You're All I Need

The 2003 Remastered Edition comes with demos and instrumentals songs for Girls, Girls, Girls, Wild Side, Rodeo (unreleased track), Nona and All In The Name Of....

The album cover pretty sums it all up right here. Sleazy rock and roll and plenty of t*tties. I approve.

What the f*ck are you waiting for? Go watch bouncing t*tties in the video already. Sheesh.

Mötley Crüe (Dr. Feelgood) 1989

Inner Sleeve

Dr. Feelgood is the definitive Mötley Crüe album. They enlisted one of the best hard rock / metal producers in the business with Bob Rock to come up with this...their masterpiece. He has produced some great albums over the years with the likes of Metallica, Bon Jovi, Aerosmith and David Lee Roth just to name a few. And what he did with Crüe and this album is clear right from the start. They weren't f*cking around this time. It goes to show that maybe, just maybe, that being sober and kicking drugs is in fact a good thing when it comes to writing and playing, because their songwriting is top notch here.

The thing that immediately hits you in the face...er, ears when the album kicks off is the sonic ferocity of Mick Mars guitars on Dr. Feelgood and Slice Of Your Pie. He really has grown into a great player with killer riffs and leads by the time of recording Dr. Feelgood. The entire album is filled with great hooks, melodies and just all around kick ass songs that even non-fans would like.  The entire album is about as perfect as you can get from top to bottom. The track list couldn't have been put together more perfectly.

The guest singers are a who's who of big names lending background vocals such as Bryan Adams, Sebastian Bach, Robin Zander, Jack Blades, Rick Nielsen and Steven Tyler.

The 2003 Remastered Edition comes with demos for Dr. Feelgood, Without You, Kickstart My Heart, Time For Change and an unreleased track for Get It For Free. The 2009 20th Anniversary Expanded Edition comes with live versions of Dr. Feelgood, Without You, Kickstart My Heart, Same Ol' Situation (S.O.S.) and Don't Go Away Mad (Just Go Away).

This album is one of a few that I gladly double...triple dipped on. Bring on the next "Whatever-Edition". I'm there.

Fave Songs: Every last one of them. MVP goes to....Kickstart My Heart

The album cover to me is a winner and iconic.

Mötley Crüe (Self-Titled) 1994

This is NOT a review

So, what does Mötley Crüe decide as the best course of action with the future of the band after arguably their finest work ever? Fire Vince Neil. Or he quit. Who the f*ck knows anymore as I've heard both sides and I'm still left in the dark as to what is true or not. What I do know is that the original 4 did get together to start work on the follow up to Dr. Feelgood. But Vince and Nikki Sixx got into a fight. The rest is history.

Anyways. In to replace Vince is John Corabi. I never heard of him till he landed the plum gig as Crüe's new singer. The only time I have ever heard anything off this album were from the 2 music videos for Hooligan's Holiday and Misunderstood. As for Misunderstood, I didn't even know a video existed until I picked up Mötley Crüe's Greatest Video Hits on DVD. What's ironic is that I have always been a fan of both songs. They don't suck. And yet, for some reason, I just have never felt the need to go out and pick this up. Probably because I just can't picture this band other than the original 4. Go figure.

Album cover sucks IMO. And since I have never bothered to go and pick it up, I don't know exactly how many different versions there are. I remember these two though. Could be more. I dunno.

Mötley Crüe (Generation Swine) 1997

After the failure of their last album with John Corabi, the original 4 members are back together since the release of Dr. Feelgood. But like everything within the band, the music cliamte had changed. Now they are having to deal with grunge as the flavor of the decade. And because of that Generation Swine does incorporate elements of grunge and alt-rock to some degree. This is definitely not Dr. Feelgood Part 2.

This isn't a bad album. It's just average at best. Just not what I would call a true "Crüe" album by any stretch here. It's really hard to even say that it has any standout songs other than perhaps Glitter. I do give the song Brandon props for going outside of the box. Waaaaaaaaaaaay outside and turning it into full orchestral piece for Tommy Lee.

Fave Songs: Afraid, Glitter, Rocketship and Brandon

The 2003 Remastered Edition comes with demos for Rocketship and Confessions, unreleased tracks for Wreck Me and Kiss the Sky and a remix for Afraid.

The album cover is kind of stupid from a marketing standpoint. It's the first Mötley Crüe album with the original band since 1989. So why cover up the band and not hype the return of the guys which would be plastering their mugs front and center. It is the first thing people walking down the aisles will notice. But then again, Pig masks does have it's charms. Oh well.

Mötley Crüe (New Tattoo) 2000

This is NOT a review

I know nothing about New Tattoo, other than that Tommy Lee quit the band to pursue his side project Methods Of Mayhem. With Lee out of the band, they brought in long time Ozzy Osbourne drummer Randy Castillo. Sadly, he would pass away due to illness. For the subsequent tour to promote the album, Samantha Maloney (Hole) filled in behind the kit. Very good drummer and held her own as seen in Lewd, Crüed and Tattooed Live. Review of the DVD coming later.

The only song I can remember even hearing off of this album was the video for Hell On High Heels. Album cover here is meh.

The 2003 Remastered Edition comes with demos for 1st Band On The Moon and P*rno Star.

Mötley Crüe (Saints Of Los Angeles) 2008

Saints Of Los Angeles is the first Mötley Crüe album with the original 4 since 1997. It is loosely based on their book The Dirt. This is a return to roots record. Well, more along the lines of Girls. Girls, Girls. Gone are any hints of alt-rock and back in is hard rock for the boys. It's a great record, but far from perfect. I haven't really listened to Saints all that much since picking it up. It really doesn't have what I would call true classic Crüe songs on par with their bigger hits ala Looks That Kill, Dr. Feelgood, etc...I will have to let this one soak in for awhile to see if any of my fave songs on here turn into classics for me.

Fave Songs: Saints Of Los Angeles, The Animal In Me, Chicks = Trouble and White Trash Circus

Album cover is.....I dunno. Blah.

Mötley Crüe (Decade Of Decadence '81-'91) 1991

Decade Of Decadence is the first of many Greatest Hits collections to come. This one is ok, but far from being top shelf, even when it came out. Not a fan of remixes when it replaces the originals. I want a set that contains the original masters and not reinventions. It's a hodgepodge of songs which included 3 new songs: Primal Scream, Angela and Anarchy In The U.K., all of which were the main reasons for me picking this one up back in the day. Home Sweet Home ('91 Remix) is ok, but I still prefer the original though.

Fave Songs: Primal Scream and Anarchy In The U.K. The album cover uses images of the band to convey a timeline of their entire career up to that point. Nice.

Mötley Crüe (Greatest Hits) 1998

Greatest Hits is a much better collection to my ears. Gone are the remixes (save for Glitter) and in are the original master hits. Two new songs were added to entice buyers into getting this one. It worked for me as the only reason for me to get this was for Bitter Pill and Enslaved. Trouble maker Tommy Lee was in the clink at the time of the recording for the new songs and is not the drummer of either song.

Fave Songs: Bitter Pill and Enslaved. The album cover is cool as I'm always a sucker for celebrity caricatures.

Mötley Crüe (Quaternary) 1994

This is NOT a review

Quaternary was released as a mail-in offer in conjunction with those that bought the Self-Titled album with John Corabi on lead vocals. Print run for this 5 song EP was set at 20,000 copies, which is of course out of print now. Personally I never knew about this release. Not surprising since I never bothered to pick up the JC album

The one song I do know of from this is Planet Boom from Tommy Lee which appeared on the Barb Wire soundtrack, which is where I originally first heard of it.

Mötley Crüe (Supersonic and Demonic Relics) 1999

This is NOT a review

I had planned to get Supersonic and Demonic Relics when it came out for the unreleased stuff. But for whatever reason, it slipped through the cracks and I just forgot about it entirely. The bulk of this Greatest Hits set includes songs from Decade and Quaternary as well as some unreleased stuff. I probably will pass on this altogether unless I find it for under 3 bucks at a local shop. The album cover is really cool though. I like both sides actually.
