Blackjack (Self-Titled) 1979

This is NOT a review

I can't find the album inside my house. It's most likely still packed away with one of my vinyl crates out in the garage. It's been years since I have listened to it that I have no recollection of how it sounds or what is even on it. So, I won't be giving a proper review till I can find it and do it justice. Also, if you're looking at the above Poll and wondering why it's so short, there is a reason for it. He doesn't have anything after The Hunger that is worthy enough to get a mention. So, just 4 to choose from. A little fun fact about this album is that it was also the first collaboration with Michael and some little unknown guitarist by the name of Bruce Kulick who would later go on to join KISS, starting with Asylum.

Michael Bolton (Self-Titled) 1983

The first time I saw the video for Fools Game on MTV when it first came out, I thought it was the best  f u c k i n g  song I had ever heard in my life. There was just something about this kick ass melody being anchored and carried by the keyboards. But then there was this sick guitar solo that just blew me away. But the biggest thing going for it were the amazing vocals. Didn't know who this guy was, but I just had to have the album. It just took that one time listening to the song and I was out the door and heading down to Licorice Pizza.

So, how did Michael Bolton's Self-Title debut pan out for me? Back then I thought it was a pretty kick ass album. I devoured it all. Okay, but that was then. What about now? It's still a good album, but far from what I was thinking back then. Half the album doesn't really hold up well because of the blatant AOR songwriting that is exhibited on here. Fools Game still gets an A+ from me. But there is also Can't Hold On, Can't Let Go which is just awesome in every way. Love the chorus as it makes for a great sing-along-song. The rest of the album is just okay for me. I think my rating for the album is definitely biased for nostalgic reasons. But if I were being paid to be impartial, I'd probably give it 3 1/2 Stars.

Even though Blackjack disbanded, Bruce Kulick still followed Bolton into his solo career and is the lead guitarist here and he is awesome. Even on some of the lesser songs, his solos are pretty damn good and infectious.

FYI, for the looooooooooooooooooongest time I swore up and down that was Stevie Nicks in the Fools Game video. Tell that chick isn't her twin sister!!!!!!!!! I STILL think it's her, even though I know deep down that it's not. But it is..................

Michael Bolton (Everybody's Crazy) 1985

Just like his Self-Titled album, Everybody's Crazy has more nostalgia going for it rather epic songs that hold up over the years. For me, this was one of my favorite albums when it came out and probably would have gotten a 10 Star rating back then. What about now? I'd give it a very generois 4 1/2 Stars when in actuality it's about a 4 at best. I remember this being a kick ass Hard Rock album back in the day, but listening to it now, not so much. Half the album is melodic AOR inspired songwriting geared strictly for the radio. That is if he could ever get it on the radio.

The first two tracks are by far the best here. Save Our Love probably ranks at the #2 slot for best Bolton song ever with its booming drum opening and infectious chorus. In the #2 slot for best Bolton song would be Fools Game from his previous album. So, what song is #1? Easily, without a doubt, it's Everybody's Crazy. Aside from the kick ass-ness of the music that is driving the song. The drum opening (very similar to Save Our Love), the the blistering guitar solos and the powerful vocals. It is THE best song lyrically he has ever written. Talk about clever writing. Just listen to the song, word for word. It's epic and it tells a cool story too.

The rest of the album, although good, just can not touch either of the first two tracks sonically or lyrically. I definitely recommend this to anyone that wants to sample something that Michael was known for that isn't sappy and lame which he would eventually make millions doing.
