Lita Ford (Dancin' On The Edge) 1984

I absolutely looooooooooove Dancin' On The Edge, more so now than I did when I got this back in 1984. What's funny is that this was my first introduction to Lita Ford as a solo artist just because of the heavy rotation that Gotta Let Go was currently enjoying on MTV. Even though I was a huge fan of her and the album itself, I was still just a kid that kind of dismissed it as "lightweight" because she was a chick and nothing could touch the likes of KISS, Van Halen, Ratt....But over the years Dancin' On The Edge has aged like fine wine and listening to it again now, the album just blows away a lot of records that I held in high esteem back in the day and it certainly could give a run for anyone else's money today if you were to put it up against some of the "bigger" release within the last few years.

First off, Lita Ford is insanely underrated as a Guitar player. She can kick some serious ass with her fretboard chops. Also, the songs themselves are incredibly memorable and sound great. The album as a whole is definitely a product of it's time both in song construction and how it was recorded, and I think therein lays the huge appeal for me and this album in particular.

A lot of songs like Dancing On The Edge, Gotta Let Go, Hit N Run and Don't Let Me Down Tonight have fantastic arrangements and great hooks and melodies. So much so that they are easy to turn into Earworms. You can't just listen to this album once and move on. It's very hard to walk away once you start playing it. If you have never heard of this album, other than perhaps Gotta Let Go, by all means give this a spin. It's a great Rock/Metal album that won't disappoint anyone that's a fan of the Metal genre.

FYI, if you've never seen the music video for Gotta Let Go, do yourself a f*cking favor and check it out. The fact that you get Lita in both Leather and 50's get up is a double win. Either way, she looks incredibly hot!

Fave Songs:
Dancin' On The Edge
Dressed To Kill
Gotta Let Go
Don't Let Me Down Tonight

Lita Ford (Lita) 1988

I thought that Lita was a pretty solid followup to Dancin' On The Edge for the time that it came out. But the thing that hindered it back in 1988 is still there all these years later. I just think the first half of the album is hit and miss for me. Songs like Back to the Cave and Falling In and Out Of Love are solid songs, but not great songs and Can't Catch Me is still my least favorite or played song for me, but I do like the time changes in the song, it's just not enough for me to get into as a whole though. But it's the 2nd half of the album that truly shines. It's beyond epic, it's amazing. I'm trying to remember any other album that had 'okay' songs to start with, but finishes off in such a strong way that it saves the album as a whole, even though it's far from perfect.

For me the best part of the album are the final 4 songs: Fatal Passion, Under The Gun, Broken Dreams and Close My Eyes Forever. It's crazy to see a massive hit song like Close My Eyes Forever closing out an album. It's usually the 2nd or 3rd track on an album. But not here. Not to be outdone, the album does contain Kiss Me Deadly, which is still one of my all time favorite songs from Lita. It STILL holds up and is a song that you want to crank as loud as possible when you want to get into a fist-pumping mood. I just wish the first half of the album was as strong as the last half, which would have made this album one for the ages.

Fave Songs:

Blueberry
Kiss Me Deadly
Fatal Passion
Under The Gun
Broken Dreams
Close My Eyes Forever

Good review.

One thing I recently read was the obsolence of albums. I'll see if I can find it. It's an essay how music and the the business model for consumers and studios are so different than 5, 10, 15 years ago.

The reason I bring this up, like Chip, I would review an album based on the project. The collection of songs. Today, that collection of songs have fadede away... To good and bad results. The focus is now on individual songs, then a playlist of the artist.

I'll see if I can find it.

I really do try to keep my reviews biased-free, regardless for my affection for an artist. It's the only way to be able to put their catalog into context and to do that, you have to review it album by album and how the songs work with the other songs. You know from previous reviews I've done in the past that the right track order is HUGE with me and is just as important as the craft of song writing which will make or break an album to my ears.
