Ratt (Detonator) 1990

Detonator really has only 3 really good songs on it and one of them I can't stand listening to anymore. More on that a bit later. Just like Reach For The Sky, the album starts off really strong and then goes into filler mode. Great opening track with Shame, Shame, Shame that shows promise that this is going to be a kick ass album. It's followed up with the albums best cut in Lovin' You Is A Dirty Job which has probably the best lyrics by Stephen Percy in the last few albums. Very creative and very clever use of double entendre's throughout.

After this, it's a series of average songs lyrically and sonically. I will say that even though I don't particularly care for All Or Nothing, it has a great solo by Warren. The last great song on the album and for all intents and purposes their career is Givin' Yourself Away. I think it's their most ambitious song that is so unlike anything they did before or since. It's just not your typical Ratt song and I guess you can tynically classify it in the "Power Ballad" genre, even though it's got more bite than most Power Ballads out there.

So, if this song is so great, then why do I hate it? I wouldn't say I hate it. It has more to do with it being tied up with a chick that I was gaga over and seeing for awhile. And then it ended. Now, whenever I hear this song, it reminds me of a place and time I'd rather forget altogether since I was listening to the song a lot back then. That's the funny thing about music. It can remind you of great times....as well as bad times.
