Ratt (Ratt EP) 1983

I didn't get into Ratt until Out Of The Cellar came out and was a monster hit. It was only then did I go back and pick up the EP. It wasn't the original vinyl release though. The record company had gone back and remixed the album to capitalized on the exploding popularity of Ratt. So, the vinyl version I have is is the glossier remixed one. I don't think I've ever heard the original vinyl release. As for this one, it's got the hallmark sound of Ratt for sure. But the oddest song on this one is an early version of Back For More.

It's probably my favorite Ratt song ever, but the early version has a very strange "popping" bass lick that sticks out like a sore thumb. It's interesting for what it is, but I'm glad that they got rid of it and settled on the Out Of The Cellar version, which is balls to the walls awesome.

The other big song from the EP is You Think You're Tough. First time I ever heard the song was on MTV for the video and remember it mainly for who was in it at the time: Ozzy Osbourne and Carmine Appice.

Ratt (Out Of The Cellar) 1984

Back For More may be my favorite song by Ratt, but they couldn't have opened up Out Of The Cellar with a better song than Wanted Man, which is so damn cool. It's got all the flavors of the LA metal scene tied up nicely in a 3 1/2 minute song. The album as a whole is very much a product of it's time for sure. But unlike a lot of those albums that came out during the same time, this one still holds it's ground as one of the best. So many great songs that showcase both Warren DeMartini and Robin Crosby. The songs are well crafted and have blistering solos throughout.

Round and Round really doesn't need to be picked apart since everyone knows it well. It's their biggest hit and was the song that got me into the band. I can't tell you how much better Back For More is compared to their original recording of the song from the EP. Thank goodness they got rid of that annoying "popping bass" lick. Lack Of Communication has one of the coolest riffs and choruses on the album. Headbanging material all the way.

Fave Songs: Wanted Man, Round and Round, Lack Of Communication, The Morning After and Back For More.

Album cover for the win. Iconic. For those that don't know, the model on the cover is none other than Tawny Kitaen who's legs also grace the cover of Ratt's EP album. She can also been seen in the video for Back For More along with Nikki Sixx and Tommy Lee.

Ratt (Invasion Of Your Privacy) 1985

I really haven't listened to Invasion Of Your Privacy from top to bottom since maybe 1987 or 1988, Listening to it now, I can say that it's very underrated album. I think the biggest knock is that it doesn't have a lot of Hit Singles like their previous album. That's not to say that the songs aren't as good. Far from it. I can see why people would kind of pass this one over just by looking at the Track List. Hell, that's what I did because the only song I would listen too was You're In Love and Lay It Down.

Along with these two songs as being their mainstays, I will stay that What You Give Is What You Get is one of the strongest cuts on this one and I had totally forgotten all about this gem. Going into Invasion, Lay It Down has always been my fave from this one. But I may have to amend that with a new fave song.

As a whole, the album is a bit more polished than Out Of The Cellar, but it's very much a Ratt album. I'd recommend this to anyone easily.

Ratt (Dancing Undercover) 1986

Dancing Undercover is another very underrated album of theirs. Granted, when I picked this up back in '86, I wasn't that much of fan of the album. Other than Dance and Slip Of The Lip, I tended to stay away from this one altogether. Boy, how times have healed old wounds. I thought the album back then was a little too polished for my taste. Many would say it sounds the same as Privacy and Cellar. But there are subtle differences that I could pick up back then and even now. It may have the same producer in Beau Hill who did Ratt's first four albums and carry that Ratt DNA. But this was a little too slick for me.

What about now? I actually like this one a lot. So much so that I'm having a hard time trying to place where it goes in their Best Of List. Is it better than Cellar? No. Is it better than Privacy? I don't know. It's probably neck and neck right now, maybe just a tad behind Privacy. But there are a couple of songs on Undercover that I would choose over Privacy in a heartbeat.

Fave Songs: Dance, One Good Lover, 7th Avenue and Enough Is Enough

Ratt (Reach For The Sky) 1988

Now I remember why I haven't listened to Reach For The Sky since basically the day it came out. It's a pretty weak album. It sounds like Ratt. It looks like Ratt. But it's not the Ratt of old. The album itself starts off very strong. But by the 3rd song, it's peaked. It's all down hill from here. The top song of course is Way Cool Jr., which showcased a more bluesier side of the band. It's a very creative and inventive song and all the credit goes to Warren DeMartini's rhythm playing with a way cool solo. Now days you can say it's a Ratt song 100%. But back when it came out the song for me showed they were more than just a Glam Metal band.

So what about the rest of the album? Pfftt. It's a lot of very average filler songs that aren't memorable by any stretch of the imagination. Not sure if the band as a whole was just bored by this time. I know that Robbin Crosby was in the throes of a crippling  h e r o i n  addiction at the time and may have contributed to a lackluster recording experience.

Fave Songs: City To City, Way Cool Jr. and I Want A Woman

Album cover is horrible. To this day, I still don't get it.

Ratt (Detonator) 1990

Detonator really has only 3 really good songs on it and one of them I can't stand listening to anymore. More on that a bit later. Just like Reach For The Sky, the album starts off really strong and then goes into filler mode. Great opening track with Shame, Shame, Shame that shows promise that this is going to be a kick ass album. It's followed up with the albums best cut in Lovin' You Is A Dirty Job which has probably the best lyrics by Stephen Percy in the last few albums. Very creative and very clever use of double entendre's throughout.

After this, it's a series of average songs lyrically and sonically. I will say that even though I don't particularly care for All Or Nothing, it has a great solo by Warren. The last great song on the album and for all intents and purposes their career is Givin' Yourself Away. I think it's their most ambitious song that is so unlike anything they did before or since. It's just not your typical Ratt song and I guess you can tynically classify it in the "Power Ballad" genre, even though it's got more bite than most Power Ballads out there.

So, if this song is so great, then why do I hate it? I wouldn't say I hate it. It has more to do with it being tied up with a chick that I was gaga over and seeing for awhile. And then it ended. Now, whenever I hear this song, it reminds me of a place and time I'd rather forget altogether since I was listening to the song a lot back then. That's the funny thing about music. It can remind you of great times....as well as bad times.

I had no idea Ratt had so many albums. I like the hits with Way Cool Jr. one of my favs. It has a classic blues sound with at the time, a great electric vibe and perfect vocals.

They have a few more, but with Detonator, it was the last with the original lineup with Robbin Crosby exiting stage left from the band after the first leg of the Tour in support of the album. Since then, it's been a rotating band with different singers, guitar players, bass players. Only Warren DeMartini and Bobby Blotzer have been the consistent link through all the lineup changes.

I was beyond stunned to hear that Juan Croucier was back in the band this year, making this the closest thing to the original 5 that started it all.

VH1's Behind The Music - Ratt

A crash course on the history of the band. It's actually a pretty good episode to boot. Full episode as well.
