Pretty Hate Machine (1989)-

--Its the most 'poppy' sounding album of the bunch, but thats definitely not a fault. Head Like a Hole and Terrible Lie are great songs to work out to.

The 2010 Remaster is excellent. If I had to fault this album, it would be that the mix was WAY too quiet. Every element and layer got a complete overhaul, and it sounds GREAT. There are background vocals/ noises I discovered for the first time after listening to the new mix. For best results, listen to this on a surround sound system. HOLY HELL! Also, it features a bonus b-side: A cover of Queen's Get Down, Make Love. It's very aggressive! Something I Can Never Have has never sounded better. The remaster is worth every penny, even if you own the original version.

Broken (1992)-

--Probably the 2nd angriest album of the '90s, close behind Staind's Tormented. Short and sweet, kind of a "**** you" to his record company at the time. If you can find it, or have the guts, check out the 'Broken Movie'. Its all kinds of ****ed up and awesome.

Speaking of remasters, this is one I wish he would remaster. I want my hate to sound great!

Fixed (1993)-

--Remix album from Broken. Some really good remixes on here, although it gets kind of repetitive.

The Downward Spiral DE (1994)-

--What a great album. Even if you dont listen to NIN, the songs on this album are easily recognizable. Closer, Hurt, March of the Pigs. My favorite is Eraser. It's a great song to crank on the stereo.

The deluxe edition has a really great 2nd disc that has demos, B-sides and a few remixes. The remix of "Closer" from Se7en is here in full.

The Fragile (1999)-

--Really good double album, although I wish the instrumentals were more even with the other songs. The Day The Whole World Went Away and The Mark Has Been Made are my favorites.

Still (2002)-

--This was included in the And All That Could Have Been live album. It has 5 "deconstructed" songs and 4 unreleased songs. 3 of those unreleased songs are rejected cues from the film One Hour Photo. The version of Something I Can Never Have on this is my favorite version. He pours his heart and soul out in that version.

With Teeth (2005)-

--I like the 'rock band' feel of the album. You Know What You Are is a great song to blast, Only is another great workout song, and Getting Smaller is fun. Right Where It Belongs is the best track on it. So very, very good.

Year Zero (2007)-

--Really great concept album with great beats and lyrical content. Survivalism, Me, I'm Not, and The Great Destroyer are my favorites. I would really love to see that mini-series Trent has planned get off the ground.

Y34RZ3R0R3MIX3D (2007)-

--Remix album from Year Zero. Some songs are changed drastically, which isnt a bad thing at all. The Kronos Quartet's version of Another Version of the Truth is beautiful and post-apocalyptic.

Ghosts I-IV (2008)-

-- A 'Soundtrack for dreamscapes'. A great album to turn on and start walking, and dont stop until its over. There are no song titles here, just the number sequence. so track 18(my favorite) would be called "18 Ghosts II".

The Slip (2008)-

--There is not one reason why this album is not in any of your collections. ITS FREE! Its also really good, fast paced (even with a 7 min minimalist instrumental near the end.) Trent's lyrics are in top form. 1,000,000, Head Down, Letting You, and Demon Seed are standouts, but the real award goes to Lights in The Sky. Its quiet, haunting and beautiful. I think its his best song.

I'm gonna expand on these later. I'll format them and stuff tomorrow!

Expanded Pretty Hate Machine to include my thoughts on the 2010 remaster.

NIИ (Pretty Hate Machine) 1989

It's been a long time since I have given this one a spin. What was groundbreaking and a huge leap in music to my ears then, doesn't really hold up as well as I thought it would now. Head Like a Hole and Terrible Lie are my 2 favorites here. But some of the other songs that I use to like, just doesn't do it for me anymore. Overall, it's not what I have come to expect from a NIИ album: hard, aggressive, in your face music, compared to NIИ of today. Yes, I get that it was their first record and had yet to establish their definitive sound. But still...

Fave Songs: Head Like a Hole, Terrible Lie, Something I Can Never Have and Sin.

NIИ (The Downward Spiral - Deluxe Edition) 1994

Rolling Stones 500 Greatest Albums Of All Time
The Downward Spiral
at #200

This is one of the few occasions where I have double dipped on an album. Originally I had the first release of The Downward Spiral back in '94. The album is so perfect and groundbreaking that it was one of my favorites for many many years. Still is. So when the opportunity to pick up the Deluxe Edition came about 10 years after the fact to celebrate it's 10 year anniversary, it was a no brainer.

I know that if they decide to release a 20 year Deluxe Edition, I will gladly pick it up. The bonus tracks, B-Sides and Remixes of the current Deluxe Edition actually adds to the overall enjoyment of the original Downward Spiral to my ears.

Fave Songs: Piggy, March Of The Pigs, Closer, Eraser, Reptile and Hurt

I hold this one very high and that is the main reason why Pretty Hate Machine gets a lower rating in my eyes. Is it fair to compare the two? Probably not, as they are both completely different albums in execution and style. But when both come from Trent Reznor, comparisons are inevitable.

As for Rolling Stones placement of the album, once again they get it totally wrong. The more I look at their 500 Greatest Album of All Time, the more convince I am that they don't know much of anything. I easily have this album in the Top 20. It's revolutionary and one for the ages.
