Styx

I try to be fair in life. Saying that I’m going to go against my grain and already think the latest Styx release is an epic fail… without even listening to it.

Regeneration: Volume I & II

A thorough research reveals that the remaining boys of the band decided to reinterpret their classic songs that are famously known and sung by Dennis DeYoung. Since DeYoung’s departure, the Styx group, product, concerts and just average to bad. They’ve put out several studio albums and each one less enjoyable than the last. I cannot recommend any of them and I certainly would have no desire to see them in concert. Sure, Tommy Shaw has done decent with some of the songs, but sometimes you need to see the writing on the wall.

What is going through the minds of Styx when they decide to re-do their classic songs. Prove something to themselves? To Dennis DeYoung? To their fans? Apparently the reviews say many of the songs are note for note perfect. Again… why? At the very least they are going to turn off purists and I guess try to attract new fans.

I will try to listen to this. I know I’m already biased. But from what I’ve listened to in their latest product and line-up incarnation, this will not be pretty.

I loath the idea of doing re-recordings of classic hit songs. Just check out my rant on this here. I like Styx, but I'm not touching this one at all. Note for note? What's the point in that? If I want a carbon copy, I'd just go to the original.
