Taylor Swift (1989) 2014

Just like everyone else on the planet, we all know who Taylor Swift is in spite of never listening to single song of hers. Well, personally I had never bothered to listen to anything she did, especially when she was the biggest Country Star. I'm not a fan of the music, so naturally I never had any desire to listen to her stuff . Well, this all changed for me once a couple of her songs (Shake It Off and Bad Blood) dropped as singles. I knew that 1989 was suppose to be heavily influenced from the 80's, making this a true Pop album, far removed from Country. Naturally I was curious to hear what the rest of the album would be. I love the two songs I mentioned, but I was highly skeptical an entire album would deliver. Very happy to say I was wrong. 1989 is a great album. It really exceeded my expectations and yes, it's definitely a Pop album and draws heavily from the best of the 80's. This just might be my new Party Album for the future. She sounds great, but I was more enamored with how the songs were crafted and arranged and how the songs worked in relations with each other throughout the entire album. It was fun to be able to pick up influences from 80's stuff.

A little fun fact about my Taylor Swift night tonight. I put my request for 1989 with my Library over 3 months ago. It arrived today and got to dive into the album tonight. In a twist of fate, Taylor was performing at Petco Park tonight. Totally forgot that she was even in town tonight. So, it was kind of an odd (or preordained) that the album would arrive 3 months to the day that she would be in town. Anyway, if you are looking for an allbum full of catchy tunes that actually sound great and unique from the tired old crap that passes for songs today, definitely give this one a Rent. Personally I will be looking for a Used Copy to Buy on eBay.

This review is from August 29, 2015 over here.

Taylor Swift D.L.X. Deluxe Edition(1989) 2014
Target Exclusive

Okay, here's an update with the time I've spent with 1989. As you know, like my boy Mac, I check out albums from my Library so that I can check them out and make a determination if it's something I want to add to my personal music library. I already knew this was definitely a must-buy for me. Getting back to the copy I had checked out from the Library, I am able to keep it for 3 weeks before I have to return it if there is anyone on the wait list for the album. I literally listened to the album non-stop for 3 weeks and around the 2 week mark, I started searching out my CD copy from eBay. There are a few different versions floating around. I settled on getting the Deluxe Edition (Target Exclusive) Brand New at a steal for $10 bucks. Still shrinked wrapped. I was very skeptical that the Deluxe Edition with the bonus tracks would be anywhere near the level of the other songs that I have been listening to for the past 3 weeks. Figured they were going to be throwaway songs and were cut from the album for a reason. Boy, was I ever wrong. I will never doubt Taylor Swift again.

The 3 bonus tracks (Wonderland, You Are In Love and New Romantics) are probably my favorite songs right now. They are definitely songs that could and should be released as singles. On top of the bonus tracks we also get 3 Songwriting Voice Memos which break down her songwriting process. Each of the 3 memos is preceded with Taylor actually talking about how she approaches that particular song. Very cool stuff. It's a mini tutorial walk-through. The last bonus swag that comes with the Deluxe Edition is a pack of Polaroids. All cool stuff. So, based on the content of the music, I have to amend my rating to reflect 10 Stars. Her lyrics are very clever and the arrangements are damn good. The more I've listened to the album, I have picked up more influences that were derived from the late 90's to early 2000's. I've picked up stuff from The Tubes to Nelly Furtado to Timbaland to Avril Lavigne to Philip Steir to Falco. The stuff is subtle but unmistakable. There are actually a bunch of things I'm hearing from song to song that I know from somewhere else. I've just not been able to place them...yet. It will come to me eventually.

Very interesting review. I'm gonna pick it up. I've seen it at the library, but I doubt they have the bonus material. I'll seek those out on YouTube.

Really curious to hear your take on this given the fact that this isn't in your wheelhouse.

I've been open to more pop of late, but it has to be good and distinctive. As I've mentioned before, listening to those 'Now' CD's, it all sounds the same.

Is Swift still considered country? Or is she pop, or some hybrid Genre I've not heard about yet?

I don't think she can go back to Country for the time being. She was big when she was a Country star. But since crossing over, she has exploded because of 1989. Now if I were her manager, I would keep her in the Pop world for the time being. I certainly wouldn't allow her to go back to country if she intends to also do the Pop thing. People would get confused and that translate into fans looking elsewhere. She has to ride the wave and then when she gets it out of her system (if she ever does), then and only then let her go back to where she started. That's my business 101.  :) To answer your question, she is full-on pop. No country to be found anywhere and for me that is a huge plus.

Taylor Swift Reacts to Ryan Adams's '1989' Cover Album

I gotta get me a physical CD so that I can listen to this properly. Not gonna listen via YouTube. Gonna check the Library and see if it's there. This looks to be a very interesting take on 1989. It might be an iTunes only thing for the time being.

Taylor Swift - Out Of The Woods

So, this just dropped tonight. Looks pretty slick and I don't think you could ask for a better way to close out 2015 than having Taylor crawling through mud.

Taylor Swift - New Romantics

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wyK7YuwUWsU&nohtml5=False

A new and what looks to be the final video/single released off of 1989 dropped this morning. The live show looks fun. I'm trying to recall if any recent album has released as many singles as 1989 has and I can't think of any. I have to go all the way back to 1987 and Def Leppard's Hysteria album to find something comparable to what will undoubtedly be called a Greatest Hits package now given how many singles there are on 1989.

Taylor Swift - …Ready For It?

This just dropped and I'm not feeling the song at all. Where Look What You Made Me Do had some interesting things going on right from the start until it became an Earworm for me after multiple plays, Ready For It really doesn't have much going for it at all. I can't ever see myself warming up to this one. At least the video is cool and about the closet thing we are ever going to get to a "naked" Taylor.

Literally just dropped 5 minutes ago and it's already racked up over 300k views. As for the song....I dig it.
